How to Make Perfect Hard Boiled Eggs

Hard boiled eggs are one of my favorite foods. If you want to eat them simply with a dash of salt, they’re excellent for deviled eggs or egg salad. There was a time when people were afraid to eat eggs because of the cholesterol included in the yolks. Research has discovered that eggs also boost the beneficial cholesterol that our systems require, and the current Federal dietary guidelines no longer advise against dietary cholesterol, which was the original reason for individuals to restrict the amount of eggs they ate in the first place.

It is quite easy to overcook eggs while boiling them, resulting in a dark green hue surrounding the yolk as well as a somewhat sulfuric flavor, which is the most common issue. My method for cooking hard boiled eggs such that they don’t become overcooked is outlined below.

What if I told you something you already knew? Fresh eggs are more difficult to peel than older eggs. It’s best if you buy your hard boiled eggs at least a week ahead of time (two weeks is even better because they’ll keep). This will ensure that the eggs are simple to peel when you’re ready to serve them. For eggs that are simple to peel and you have fresh eggs, heating them for 15 minutes could be a good solution. Pour an inch of water into a saucepan and place the asteamer basket in the center of the pot.

Place the eggs in a steamer basket, cover with a lid, and steam for 15 minutes (or longer, depending on your preference).

(Alternatively, you can steam eggs in a pressure cooker!) For cooked eggs that are difficult to peel after boiling, consider shattering the shells all around the eggs without peeling them and soaking the eggs in water for a few minutes before peeling them.

If you reside at a high altitude, you may either leave the eggs in the boiling water for a longer period of time or decrease the heat and keep the eggs at a low simmer for 10 to 12 minutes.

  1. Cover the eggs in a pot with water and bring to a boil. Fill a saucepan with cold water until it is approximately a quarter of its capacity. In the bottom of the pot, arrange the eggs in a single layer and set aside. Increase the amount of water until the eggs are covered by at least an inch or two of liquid. The greater the number of eggs that are crammed into the pan, the more water you should pour over them. Six eggs should be covered by at least an inch of water, seven to twelve eggs by two inches. Elise Bauer is a woman who works in the fashion industry. Elise Bauer is a woman who works in the fashion industry. Turn the heat up to high and bring the water to a full rolling boil in the saucepan. Add a teaspoon of vinegar to the water to help prevent egg whites from pouring out if your eggs crack in the middle of the cooking process. Another option is to add 1/2 teaspoon of salt to the water, which some people feel helps avoid breaking while also making the eggs easier to peel. Allow for 10-12 minutes of resting time after turning off the heat but leaving the pan on the hot burner. For stove burners that do not maintain heat after being switched off, it may be necessary to drop the temperature to low, simmer for a minute, and then turn the burner off. Depending on how well done you prefer your hard boiled eggs, the eggs should be done in 10-12 minutes, depending on how well done you like them. Although this is the case, it may take a few minutes longer depending on your altitude, the shape of your pan, the size of your eggs, and the ratio of water to eggs used. Alternatively, if you want your eggs to be slightly undercooked, you may cook them for a few minutes shorter. Stick with it once you’ve found a time that works for you based on your tastes, the sorts of eggs you buy, the pots and pans you use, the stove you use, and your cooking environment. If I’m cooking a large batch of eggs, I’ll sacrifice one after 10 minutes to check for doneness. I’ll remove it with a spoon, run it under cold water, then cut it open to inspect. Cooking the remaining eggs for a further minute or two may be necessary if the first egg is not done to my satisfaction. In addition, I have found that employing this procedure, it is quite difficult to overcook eggs. I have found that I can leave the eggs covered for up to 15-18 minutes without the eggs being overdone. Elise Bauer is a woman who works in the fashion industry. Elise Bauer is a woman who works in the fashion industry. Remove the eggs from the pan and pour cold water over them to chill them fast and prevent them from frying any more. For big batches of eggs, transfer them to an ice water bath using a slotted spoon after they have been cooked for a long time. I’ve found that peeling the eggs under a stream of flowing water is the most convenient method for me. Hard boiled eggs should be stored in a closed container in the refrigerator for the best results. Eggs can emit scents while stored in the refrigerator, which is why it is beneficial to keep them covered. They should be consumed within 5 days of purchase.

Even if you forget and let the eggs lie in the water for a few minutes longer than you intended, they will still be perfectly fine with this procedure. Some people prefer their eggs less or more hard boiled than others, and this is down to personal preference. For eggs that are still somewhat transparent in the center, only let them soak in hot water for about 6 minutes at the very most. Elise Bauer is a woman who works in the fashion industry.

Perfect Hard Boiled Eggs

This post may include affiliate links, which means I may receive a commission if you click on them. Please see my disclosure page for more information. Make excellent hard boiled eggs every time with these suggestions, which are easy to peel and have a creamy golden yolk. It takes about 6-7 minutes to prepare. A lousy hard-boiled egg may completely derail your morning routine. Is it possible that you’ve had a complimentary hotel breakfast when you picked up an egg from the breakfast buffet only to discover later that it was overdone, with a gray-green ring around the yolk?

I’m going to share with you some of my best strategies for creating flawless eggs every time.

Perfect eggs have no green ring around the yolk; the yolk is creamy and mellow; and you may opt to skip the hard-boiling step altogether and make gooey soft-boiled eggs instead for a more indulgent treat.

Some people recommend removing the saucepan containing the eggs from the heat after the water begins to boil and allowing them to sit for around 15 minutes.

That’s a significant amount of time for me. That amount of time is sufficient to prepare a complete supper. Cooking eggs in the Instant Pot takes about 5 minutes and results in perfectly cooked eggs.

How to boil eggs quicklyeasily

Hard-boiled eggs, in my opinion, should be simple and quick to prepare. The time it takes to cook a perfect creamy egg is merely 6-7 minutes. Why would you spend half an hour when you can have perfectly cooked eggs in seconds? When I boil eggs in the morning for breakfast, the last thing I want to do is sit around and wait for them to cook for an extended period of time. In terms of protein, eggs are a practical and reasonably priced option. If you have hard-boiled eggs on hand, you may make a filling breakfast, lunch, snack, appetizer, or supper using the ingredients you already have.

Ingredients

To create the greatest hard boiled eggs, you’ll need three ingredients: eggs, water, and ice.

Equipment

Saucepan, timer, slotted spoon, and a bowl for the ice bath are all required.

How to make hard boiled eggs

  • Place the eggs in a large sauce pan and cook over medium heat until done. Cover them with cold water to a depth of one inch
  • Heat water in a large saucepan over high heat until it comes to a rolling boil, then decrease heat to medium-high and set a timer for the amount of time you want it to cook (around 20 minutes). Hard boiled eggs should be cooked for 6–7 minutes over medium-high heat for excellent results. Transfer them to a large dish of cold water using a slotted spoon and set them aside to cool for a couple of minutes. Alternatively, you may run them under cool running water to halt the frying process. This will also make it easier for the eggs to peel
  • Remove the eggs from the cold water and peel them as soon as possible.

How long to boil them and cook time chart

The following are the recommended timings for boiling eggs:

  • For soft-boiled eggs, cook for 4 minutes
  • For slightly soft-boiled eggs, cook for 5 minutes
  • For custardy but firm soft-boiled eggs, cook for 6 minutes
  • For creamy hard-boiled eggs, cook for 7 minutes
  • For firm yet still creamy hard-boiled eggs, cook for 8 minutes
  • For very firm hard-boiled eggs, cook for 9 minutes

How to peel the eggs

After boiling the eggs and allowing them to cool in ice-cold water, carefully break the shells open and roll them on the counter to cool. The shell will come off with relative ease. For eggs that are particularly difficult to peel, break them all over without peeling them and set them under a little stream of running water or soak them in a bowl of water for a few minutes before peeling them again. The water seeps into the shell and makes it easier to pull away from the surface.

Cook the Eggs

Hardboiled eggs that have been overcooked are awful, with rubbery whites and chalky, crumbly yolks. That will almost certainly result in a sour egg salad from the get-go. A detailed post describing my process for perfectly cooked, easy-to-peel hard boiled eggs can be found right here.

The general procedure is as follows: Gently insert the eggs into boiling water for 13 minutes (keeping the boil at a slow bubble rather than a rapid boil), then transfer the eggs to an ice bath for one minute to halt the cooking process, then peel them after that.

Peel and Chop the Eggs, then Add Mayo

Make a slaw by chopping up the peeled eggs into pieces and mixing them with the mayonnaise: It’s time to add all of the freshness and flavor.

Prep the Crunch and Flavor

To make a salad, I use the following ingredients, arranged from left to right: chopped celery, sliced scallions, chopped cornichons (my favorite type of pickle), and fresh dill. Each one adds a different level of taste and texture to the salad.

Add Seasoning Too

Combine the vegetables and herbs in a large mixing bowl with the mustard, salt, and pepper: Ensure that the mixture is properly blended:

Serve the Egg Salad!

You are now free to utilize the egg salad whatever you choose with no restrictions. My favorite sandwich is a classic: I also enjoy it on crackers, and you can dress it up with a dill garnish to make it more visually appealing: Enjoy!
