Grilled Cheese In The Oven

Fall is not one of my favorite seasons, and I must say that it is not one of mine either. Despite the fact that I grew up in Ohio, I am definitely not a cold weather gal. Winter has left my fingers and toes feeling like ice, and the dismal skies have made me want to stay in my comfortable, warm bed till spring comes around again. Fall comfort food, on the other hand, is something I really enjoy! Soups and chilis are in charge, and thus early in the season, all of our old favorites are feeling fresh again — even the classictomato basil soup served with grilled cheese sandwiches, which is a basic.

Oh, absolutely, if you were unfamiliar with this approach (as I was, to be honest), you are in for a VERY pleasant surprise!

To make sure that everyone had a nice and fresh grilled cheese sandwich with their bowl of soup, I used to have two pans on the burner at the same time, as well as the panini press, cooking at all times.

Not sure if I looked on Google for a solution or looked on Pinterest, but when I came across the sheet pan grilled cheese in the oven approach, I couldn’t believe how EASY it was.

In any case, one approach calls for the use of two half sheet pans, with the second pan being put on top of the sandwiches to expedite the cooking process and reduce cooking time. You may give it a shot if you want, but I didn’t find this strategy to be particularly efficient.

  1. Aside from that, I was left with more equipment to clean up — and you know how much I enjoy cleaning dishes.
  2. Each sandwich is as simple as spreading softened butter on the outsides of two slices of sourdough bread, layering on the inside with the necessary amount of slices of cheese, and placing them on a baking sheet.

The amount of time it takes to cook grilled cheese in the oven is dependent on a number of elements, including the type of bread used (wheat, white, etc.), the thickness of the bread slices, the temperature of the cheese, and the general peculiarities of your particular oven. To be honest, I felt stupid looking at a recipe for grilled cheese sandwiches, but it was a good decision. As a side note, I was embarrassed by how long it took me to get this correct, LOL. I had no idea that the bottom of the sandwich would be the first to brown. As a result, the first time I fried them, I was too focused on getting the top golden brown that the bottom was burned. Once the bottom was done, I turned them over and continued to cook the other side for the same length of time as the first.

  • It worked the third time around:-) I turned the sandwiches when the bottoms were done and examined the sandwiches after another 2-3 minutes.
  • Six to eight minutes are required for the entire cooking process.
  • These are fantastic.
  • So, I’m a slow learner, but they are excellent resources!
  • I’m going to say it again and again!
  • Until high school, I had never had them any other way than this.

This worked out well in the end.

Two pieces of American cheese were my option for the sandwiches this time, but I’m looking forward to experimenting with different ingredients such as tomato, ham, or maybe a tuna melt in the future.

It’s a fantastic idea if you require a large number of items at the same time.

Everything about the grilled cheese is ah-mazing!

Who would have guessed that baking a sandwich would result in such a dramatic difference in flavor?

I used two pieces of cheese and cooked them for 6 minutes on each side at 425 degrees.

  • The amount of time it takes depends on the type of bread (e.g., wheat white, etc.), the thickness of the bread slices, and the temperature of the cheese when it is placed in the oven.
  • It will not melt the cheese if it is still at refrigerator temperature when the bread is browned.
  • White bread takes 5-6 minutes on each side for me, while wheat bread takes 3-4 minutes on each side for me, depending on my oven.
  • On top of the cheese, place another slice of buttered bread, butter-side down.
  • It’s now flawless every time for me, and I’m not even trying.
  • Mine is just approximately 6 months old at the time of writing.
  • When I was in school, this is how they prepared it for us.
  • Honestly, it’s quite delicious!

What is Grilled Cheese?

Grilled cheese has been a staple of the American sandwich scene since its inception in 1920. Initially made with American cheese, but now usually prepared with one or more different cheeses, it is a hot sandwich made with buttered and toasted bread and originally filled with American cheese.

Ingredients

  • Tougher-sliced bread, such as Texas toast or French baguette, is preferred. 1 1/2 tablespoons butter per piece of bread is a good amount to use. We use unsalted butter, but any type of butter would do
  • We utilize a blend of sliced medium cheddar, gouda, and Havarti cheeses for the cheese

How to Make Grilled Cheese

  1. Spread 1/2 tbsp butter on one side of each slice of bread and toast it until golden brown. Heat a skillet by placing it over a low to medium/low heat setting. The temperature of a griddle should be 275 degrees Fahrenheit. Add 2 pieces of bread with the butter-side down to the pan right away
  2. Make a cheese sandwich by stacking cheeses on one piece of toast and then covering them with the second piece of toast and flipping the sandwich over. Brown the toast– Continue sauteeing, turning once, until both sides are golden brown and the cheese is melted
  3. Remove from heat and serve. To serve, split the sandwich in half on the diagonal to make a triangle shape.

How long should grilled cheese be cooked? Cooking time for grilled cheese over low to medium/low heat is around 6-7 minutes total time. That is enough time for the outside to crisp and brown while also allowing the cheese to completely melt within the sandwich.

Tips for the Best Grilled Cheese

  • Low heat is required for the perfect grilled cheese, and it requires a little patience. Keeping the heat on low will allow the cheese to fully melt as the bread toasts to a golden brown and crisp texture. If the browning is occurring too quickly, reduce the heat. Use a substantial amount of butter– the amount of butter may appear excessive, but it is necessary for a crispy surface. Use thick-sliced bread — we like to use Texas toast since it’s sliced nearly twice as thick as regular sandwich bread, which makes it ideal for sandwiches. Ideally, your bread should be between 3/4 inch and 1 inch thick
  • However, avoid bread that is too thick, since your cheese will not melt correctly. It is not uncommon for sandwiches made with too-thin bread to be fragile and even mushy in the middle.

Common Questions

What can I use to make a grilled cheese sandwich? You may use a cast-iron skillet or any other nonstick pan for this recipe. Try using a griddle or flat stovetop, or even an apanini press, to cook numerous sandwiches at the same time. Is it possible to broil a grilled cheese sandwich? Grilled cheese, contrary to its name, is not really grilled. Grilling is an option, but you’ll want to maintain the heat on a low setting to avoid scorching the bread before the cheese melts completely. What is the greatest type of cheese to use for grilled cheese sandwiches?

Monterey Jack or even American cheese can suffice in this situation.

While mayonnaise may appear to be more easy to put on the bread, it will impart a mayonnaise flavor to your sandwich, which is why we choose butter. If you don’t have softened butter, you may learn how to soften butter in 5 minutes by watching our video instruction.

Reheating Grilled Cheese

You may prepare this sandwich ahead of time; simply allow it to cool to room temperature before covering and refrigerating for 3 to 5 days. Ideally, you should reheat it in the same manner in which it was originally prepared.

  • In a pan over medium-low heat, cover with a lid or tent with aluminum foil and heat until the cheese is melted in the middle, turning once throughout the process. The cover holds in the heat, allowing the cheese to melt. Once the cheese has melted, remove the cover to allow the bread to crisp up. In order to avoid the bread becoming mushy and soggy, we recommend that you avoid microwaving it as much as possible.

Continue to cook until the bread is a beautiful golden brown, turning once and pressing down lightly on the bread to help it adhere to the cheese as it cooks more. The whole cooking time should be between 5 and 6 minutes. Maintain a medium-low heat to allow the breads to toast gently, allowing your cheese a time to properly melt and attach to the bread. Once you notice that the cheese has melted and the breads have browned, transfer the dish to a platter and cut it in two diagonally before serving. Repeat the process with the next sandwich.

You may use any number of ingredients to make the sandwiches, including garlicky sautéed greens (one of my faves), tomatoes and basil (Ella’s favorite), ham or turkey (James’s favorite), roasted mushrooms, artichoke hearts, sauerkraut, and so on. You have the option of doing a single filling or a mix of fillings (such as ham and sauerkraut, or greens with sun-dried tomatoes). As well as cheddar cheese, you can use any other melty cheese (or cheeses) of your choice, including Gruyere, Comté, and American.

Oven baked grilled cheese for a crowd

Speaking of friends, if you haven’t ever baked a large batch of grilled cheese sandwiches for a get-together, you haven’t experienced life (oh fine, thatmight be a bit dramatic). Oven grilled cheese is a simple and delicious way to serve a large group of people, whether as a relaxed meal with a large pot of soup (think game day!) or as a finger food appetizer. Fill the grilled cheese sandwiches with something fancy, such as caramelized onions and fig jam, and then cut the sandwiches into little pieces before presenting them as an attractive starter to a dinner.

How to make a grilled cheese in the oven

The procedure is straightforward. Begin with a loaf of your favorite bread (gluten-free, please, for me) and some melted butter (check out my tips below for softening butter if you forget to leave it out). Each piece of bread should have one side of butter spread on it. Place half of the bread pieces, buttered side down, on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil (I spritz the pan with cooking spray to ensure that nothing sticks). After that, add a piece of cheese on top. Fillings can be added at this point if desired.

The result is grilled cheese sandwiches that are warm and cheesy, but not too greasy or heavy on the fat.

Oven grilled cheese tips:

  • Because broiler temperatures vary from oven to oven, keep an eye on the sandwiches until you develop a feel for your particular model. Furthermore, white bread tends to toast more quickly than whole wheat or gluten-free bread. This recipe will need the use of a cookie sheet. In this case, I recommend using a heavy, rimmed baking sheet
  • If you forget to leave the butter out to soften, microwave it in 5-second intervals, checking after each, until it’s just soft enough to spread
  • You can use any kind of melty cheese that you choose. The cheddar or an Alpine type cheese, such as Emmentaler, Gruyere, or Comté, is my preferred choice, although American cheese is acceptable as well

  • Spraying the pan with cooking spray
  • 10 pieces of bread, either ordinary or gluten-free
  • 4 tablespoons melted butter
  • 10 pieces of cheese (such as cheddar, Emmentaler, Gruyere, Provolone, or American), or as many as you like (depending on your preference)
  • Optional garnishes include tomato slices, fresh herbs, sautéed greens, chopped sun-dried tomatoes, chopped roasted red peppers, chopped artichoke hearts, roasted mushrooms, thinly sliced ham or turkey, and sauerkraut, among other things.
  • Preheat the oven to broil, using a rack in the upper third of the oven, and set aside. Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with aluminum foil and gently spraying it with cooking spray
  • Spread butter on one side of each piece of bread. 5 pieces of bread, greased sides down, should be placed in a uniform layer on the baking sheet that has been prepared. Using a slice of cheese, spread it on each piece of toast. Place whatever other ingredients you’re using on top of the cheese. Then, using the remaining slices of bread, butter the greased sides of each sandwich and top with another slice of cheese (if you prefer it extra cheesy, use two slices on top). Each sandwich should have a gentle press down on it
  • Broil the sandwiches on the rack that has been prepared, rotating the pan halfway through, until they are brown and toasted, about 3 minutes. Turn off the oven and broil the sandwiches for another 2-3 minutes, or until they are toasted on the other side
  • Remove the pan from the oven and flip the sandwiches over
  • Because broiler temperatures vary from oven to oven, keep an eye on the sandwiches until you develop a feel for your particular model. Furthermore, white bread tends to toast more quickly than whole wheat or gluten-free bread. This recipe will need the use of a cookie sheet. I like a sturdy baking sheet with a rim, such as this one. You may microwave the butter in 5-second intervals, checking after each one, until it is just soft enough to spread if you neglect to leave it out to soften before baking. You can use any kind of melty cheese that you choose. The cheddar or an Alpine type cheese, such as Emmentaler, Gruyere, or Comté, is my preferred choice, although American cheese is acceptable as well

More oven-baked grilled cheese ideas, including pizza flavor

Once you’ve mastered the fundamentals of cooking oven grilled cheese, there are many possibilities to experiment with. An evening spent with friends or a DIY family supper are both excellent options for this concept. Distribute bowls of toppings so that everyone may design his or her own sandwich. Examples include caramelized onions, chutney, tapenade, sundried tomatoes, pesto, herbs, and grilled veggies, among other things. Consider experimenting with several types of cheese in addition to cheddar, such as goat cheese, brie, and blue cheese.

We keep it basic with canned marinara sauce, mozzarella cheese, and pepperoni slices, but you can customize it with olives, mushrooms, spinach, or any other favorite toppings.

A spread of sliced ham and pineapple chutney over pieces of bread with mozzarella and marinara would be a delicious combination.

Or are you more of a purist and prefer a margherita pizza instead? A grilled cheese sandwich made with fresh mozzarella, sliced tomatoes, and basil is also delicious. Pizza Grilled Cheese Sandwiches by Yummly (Oven-Baked Pizza with Grilled Cheese)

The Best Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

There are several methods to make the perfect grilled cheese sandwich, but a cast iron pan (with a lid) will always be the least risky option for making one. Nothing beats cast iron for creating an evenly heated surface that results in a uniformly browned sandwich. Covering the pan also speeds up the cheese melting process, avoiding the most typical grilled cheese mistakes: under-melted cheese or over-browned bread. Grilled cheese enthusiasts are divided into two groups: those who use mayonnaise and those who do not.

This will help to ensure even browning and will also impart a slight tangy taste that we adore to the sandwich.

What about the bread, you ask?

You Know You Want It

A grilled cheese sandwich is similar to seeing someone yawn in that it is absolutely and utterly contagious to the observer. The pan begins to heat up, and you can almost taste the creamy mayo and butter beginning to flow through the softly roasting bread as the pan heats. When the first bite is eaten, a knife crunches through the perfectly crispy and toasty sandwich, and melted cheese oozes out the sides. And that’s the end of you—you’re no longer alive.

The Best Grilled Cheese Recipe EVER.

Isn’t it true that we all like a tasty grilled cheese sandwich? But, have you ever attempted to make an enormous grilled cheese sandwich on your stovetop at home? What I’m talking about is the type of cheese pull that goes on for miles and crispy, perfectly golden brown rims of buttery bliss. Sometimes you get it right, sometimes you get it wrong, or it comes out a bit dry, or the cheese isn’t completely melted, but it’s always delicious. We’re here to show you how to create the finest grilled cheese you’ve ever had, so you’ll never be disappointed again!

How To Make Grilled Cheese

Anyone can cook a decent grilled cheese sandwich. We want you to know, however, just how to prepare the best grilled cheese sandwich possible. As is always the case, technique is key. The success of our grilled cheese recipe is dependent on a few critical factors:

  • Heat on a low setting. You can’t hurry a delicious grilled cheese sandwich. When cooking on a low heat, the bread toasts gently (and does not burn) while the cheese melts
  • Both butter and mayonnaise are used. Yes, we’re proposing that you should use mayonnaise to prepare your grilled cheese! This is not the time to cut corners, my friends! Grilled cheese is a delectable treat no matter how you slice it (we’re diagonal people, after all). Just go ahead and make a statement! Ensure that it is flawless and then enjoy it
  • Cheese that has been shredded. If you’re cooking a grilled cheese sandwich, shredded cheese will melt more rapidly and evenly than slices
  • Therefore, it’s the best choice.
  • White bread is a type of bread that is white in color. A fantastic toaster that is classic and straightforward. Moreover, it does an excellent job of soaking up all of the melted butter and creamy mayonnaise

And the Best Cheese for Grilled Cheese is…

We love ordinary old cheddar cheese—either sharp or medium, depending on your preference—but a fantastic grilled cheese sandwich can be created with a variety of various cheeses, and our grilled cheese recipe will work with nearly any cheese you choose as long as it is soft.

Here are a couple excellent melters to get you started:

  • Monterey Jack. Combined with a little sharp cheddar, such as Gruyère, this light, creamy white cheese melts even better than cheddar and is really delicious. Gruyère is an Alpine-style cheese that is commonly accessible in the United States. It is used to produce a highly delicious grilled cheese sandwich known as Raclette, which is nutty and pleasantly salty. Once again, this is a lovely Alpine-style cheese that is almost designed for melting. Blue / Chevré is a washed-rind cheese that has a funkier flavor than Gruyère and can undoubtedly elevate your grilled cheese to a more sophisticated level. The addition of tangy chevré or sharp blue cheeses to a grilled cheese sandwich can be delectable, but we prefer to use them sparingly and in combination with mild, melty cheeses like Jack or cheddar

And the Best Bread for Grilled Cheese is…

White bread, please! If you can find it, try to get it thick-sliced. Even the most ordinary mushy, delicate white bread will crisp up wonderfully in the skillet and serve as a toasted, pleasantly neutral vessel for all of that cheese.

Tools You’ll Need to Make The Perfect Grilled Cheese:

  • Skillet made of cast iron
  • Sturdy spatula
  • Grater for cheese

Perfect Grilled Cheese

  • Serves 4 people
  • Preparation time: 5 minutes
  • Cooking time: 20 minutes
  • Calories: 436

Ingredients

  • 8 slices of thick white bread
  • 4 tablespoons of butter 4 tablespoons of good mayonnaise 1 pound of room temperature butter Cheddar (or any other cheese of your choice)

Method

  1. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise and the butter until well incorporated. To assemble the sandwiches, apply the butter-mayo mixture on one side of each piece of bread and sandwich together. 1/2 cup grated cheese should be placed on the interior of the bread, which should be topped with a second piece of bread that has been made using the same butter/mayo mixture. Place the prepared sandwich in a cold cast iron pan and cook on a low heat for a few minutes. Keep a close eye on the pan to ensure that the butter-mayo does not burn, and flip the pan as soon as one side is golden brown before continuing with the other side. This procedure should take 8-10 minutes each side on average. Do not speed through this procedure or you will lose the crunchy golden crust that makes a great grilled cheese so delicious. Cook until both sides are golden brown on both sides, then transfer to a platter and serve
