I love Freeze Dry Ice Cream Treats

If you’ve been looking around the rest of the site, you’ve probably noticed a few of other freeze dried treat postings that I’ve made in the past. This one is entirely devoted to ice cream confections. The texture of this freeze dried ice cream is so delicious, you’ll find yourself wanting to lick the screen! At the very least, I do. Is it just me? Now it’s time to move on.

I. Love. Ice. Cream.

That is something I wish I could scream at the top of my lungs. It’s practically half-full in one of our stand-up freezers with ice cream delicacies ranging from keto to sugar-free to light to Umpqua – and yes, Umpqua is truly out of this world. Those who have experienced it can understand why. Ammiright? I made a special effort to include some of our favorites in this particular batch. Okay, I’ll admit it: I went with MY favorites. As long as the rest of the family isn’t fussy about their food (they’ll practically eat anything that looks like ice cream), I believe it’s alright if I’m choosy about what I put in the food storage or our cache of dirt biking/hunting/camping snacks for the weekend.

Okay, so the name of this ice cream is Unicorn Sparkle, to be precise. Through Great Value (Walmart’s generic brand), this is possible. It has become a source of obsession for me. ObSEssed. I’m not exaggerating. A ribbon of dazzling frosting with sprinkles runs through the center of the cake batter, which tastes like cake batter and has many colors flecked throughout it. Allow me to explain. It was worthwhile to try this out.

It’s true that the majority of them did not make it inside the mylar or jars. It was. really pleasant. They were fantastic. They’re referred to as “Unicorn Poop.” This appears to be a significant amount of feces as well!

Ice cream sandwiches, on the other hand, are a perennial delight. They’re similar to Oreos with ice cream inside. Isn’t that correct? I made two distinct kinds of cookies here — a vanilla and chocolate split, and then the basic cookie recipe. I also included the Fat Boy Strawberry ones because, well, why not?

The best technique is to cut them in half long ways, which results in a tremendous mess, but it was enjoyable to clean up afterwards. I made care to place them with the ice cream side up so that they would be completely exposed throughout the freeze drying process. Don’t these look like they’d be entertaining? It’s true; they truly do.

Why? The chocolate did not become dry when it was frozen. I knew chocolate wouldn’t do that, but for some inexplicable reason, I was under the impression that this chocolate was some sort of magical chocolate. To be quite honest, I have no idea what I was thinking. After being freeze dried, it was still a little melted on the silicone mats. The meltiness is a strange sensation. It would completely destroy whatever contained within the mylar bags or jars. As a result, I handed all of the halves to my children, who were thrilled with them.

When it comes to retaining its form and shape, ice cream sandwiches worked best; regular ice cream, much like raw eggs or soup, requires more attention in order to maintain any sort of shape. HOW DO I FREEZE DRY ICE CREAM TREATS?

Many people believe that it is very hard to accomplish the freeze drying on their own at home. This is far from being accurate. Harvest Right simplifies the process of freeze drying at home. Their freeze-drying machines are available in three different sizes, and they perform everything — with the exception of prep and packaging – in the machine. That is all up to you. After placing the trays inside the drum on the shelves of the Harvest Right freeze drier – this method works on all sizes – I close the drum lid and tighten the handle while locking it shut. How to Make Freeze Dried Ice Cream

Article in PDF format Article in PDF format In the gift shop of every scientific museum, you’ve almost certainly seen freeze-dried “astronaut” ice cream, which is marketed in the name of science. The delicate, airy quality of the ice cream, which nearly melts in your tongue, is particularly appealing to children. In order to make freeze dried ice cream, you will need a freeze dryer, which will freeze the ice cream to an incredibly low temperature and then dry it using a strong vacuum pump to remove all of the moisture from the product.

Ingredients

  • Ice cream in the flavor of your choice (about 1.5 quarts/1.4 liters)
  • 4 big egg whites, room temperature
  • 14 teaspoon (1 g) cream of tartar
  • 1 cup (200 g) sugar
  • 1 tablespoon (15 mL) flavoring extract, such as vanilla
  • 4 large egg whites, room temperature Gel food coloring (optional)
  • Baking soda
  1. First, put the ice cream on the freeze dryer tray. You may use 1.5 quarts (1.4 liters) of homemade or store-bought ice cream in the flavor of your choosing to make this dessert. Using an ice cream scoop, place individual servings of the ice cream on the tray from the freeze drier, or soften the ice cream slightly enough that you can spread it throughout the tray in a thin layer
  • Alternatively, you may spread the ice cream in a layer on the freeze dryer tray and then break it into individual pieces once it has been freeze dried
  • Or More than 1.5 quarts (1.4 liters) of ice cream may be frozen dried if you use several freeze drier tray inserts.
  • 2 Place the ice cream in the freezer for a few minutes to chill. It is beneficial to set the tray containing the ice cream in your freezer for 1 to 2 hours before using the freeze drier, even if the ice cream may be frozen to temperatures as low as -30°F (-34°C). The freeze time in the freeze drier will be reduced by one to one and a half hours as a result of doing so.
  • This step is completely optional. If you want, you may simply drop the ice cream in the freeze drier without melting it first. Before putting the ice cream in the freezer, wrap it in plastic wrap to prevent it from taking up other flavors or aromas from the tray.
  • 3 Place the tray in the freeze drier and set the freeze and dry durations to the proper lengths of time. Insert the tray into the freeze dryer, making sure it is firmly in position. Turn on the appliance and select the proper freeze and dry periods for the ice cream according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Turn off the appliance and set it aside. You may experiment with different time settings to find the ones that work best for you while making freeze dried ice cream.
  • When it comes to freezing and drying time, the freeze dryer that you use can make a difference, therefore it is vital to read the instructions to have a better sense of what settings are acceptable. You may experiment with different freeze and dry periods to find what works best for you. If you’re not sure what freeze and dry times to use, start with 12 hours of freeze time and 12 hours of dry time and see how it goes. Use the default setting the first time you freeze dry the ice cream to see how it turns out
  • You may also experiment with different settings.
  • 4Allow the dryer to run for a few minutes. It will take some time for the ice cream to become completely frozen. In certain circumstances, it may take a day or even longer to complete. Open the dryer door while the ice cream is still frozen to avoid interrupting the freeze drying process and ending up with ice cream that isn’t fully freeze dried
  • 5Inspect the ice cream for dryness before serving. When the freeze dryer has completed its freezing and drying cycles, carefully remove the tray from the appliance and place it somewhere safe. To split it in half or to taste it, choose the thickest portion of the ice cream and break it in half. 6. You will detect the presence of moisture if there is any
  • You will also notice the presence of coolness and dampness. If extra dry time is required, increase the amount of time. If you see that there is still moisture remaining in the ice cream, turn on the freezer drier to extend the drying period even more. After that, depending on how long you originally set the ice cream to dry, another couple of hours should be adequate to complete the drying process. Take the ice cream out of the tray and serve it immediately. Once the ice cream has dried completely, it may be removed from the tray. Spreading it in a single layer on the tray and breaking it into pieces with a knife or fork will result in a mushy mess. This ice cream may be consumed immediately or stored in sealed containers for up to three months.
  • Frozen dry ice cream does not need to be refrigerated prior to serving. It has a shelf life of up to 25 years when stored at room temperature.
  1. 1Preheat the oven to 350°F and place the racks in the oven. Set the temperature of your oven to 200°F (93°C) or the Low setting and allow it to heat through completely. Also, make certain that the oven racks are positioned in the top and bottom thirds of the oven
  2. 2 Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper. A baking sheet will be required in order to bake the meringue in the oven and dry off the pieces. When baking the meringue scoops, it is helpful to place a piece of parchment paper on the baking pan to prevent them from sticking together.
  • If you want, you may use a silicone baking surface in place of the parchment paper.
  • 3 Using an electric mixer, whip the egg whites until foamy. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 4 big egg whites that are at room temperature. Set aside for 45 seconds while you whip the whites on medium-low speed with an electric mixer until they are barely foamy.
  • The easiest way to separate the egg whites from the yolk is to smash the egg against a flat surface, such as a tabletop. Holding the egg over a bowl, break it open so that the yolk falls into the bottom half of the shell is a good technique. The yolk should be moved back and forth between the two halves while the white should be dripped into the bowl below. Continue to slide the yolk around until all of the white has been removed. You may either preserve the yolk in the refrigerator for another recipe that calls for it or throw it away
  • You can also create the meringue using a stand mixer if you prefer.
  • 4 Add in the cream of tartar and continue to beat until the mixture is thick. Add 14 teaspoon (1 g) of cream of tartar to the egg whites and whisk until stiff peaks form. In a medium-high setting, increase the speed of the electric mixer and continue to beat the mixture until it has the consistency of shaving cream, about 2 minutes. 5 Combine the sugar and extract in a separate bowl. Fill the egg white mixture with 1 cup (200 g) sugar and 1 tablespoon (15 mL) flavoring extract of your choice, such as vanilla extract. Whisk until well combined. If you’d like, you can also color the meringue with a few drops of gel food coloring if you prefer. Maintain the medium-high speed of the mixer and continue to beat until the sugar, extract, and coloring have been fully incorporated
  • Make certain you use a flavoring extract rather than an oil
  • It is possible that you will need to use less sugar if you are using a more delicious extract, such as peppermint or lemon, depending on how powerful you want the flavor to be.
  • 6Beat the mixture on high speed until stiff peaks begin to form. Using a medium-high speed, continue mixing the egg white mixture until stiff peaks form after the sugar and extract have been fully combined. The consistency is correct if the peaks do not droop when you turn the beater upside down
  • Otherwise, the consistency is incorrect. 7 Scoop the meringues onto the baking sheet and place them in a single layer. With the use of a cookie scoop, make individual mounds of the meringue mixture and place them on the parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Scooping the meringue should be easier if the scoop has been dipped in room temperature water and shaken off the excess.
  • For each scoop of ice cream, you should use roughly 1 tablespoon (3 g) of meringue. Ideally, when you place the meringue on the baking sheet, the mounds should resemble ice cream scoops
  • However, this is not necessary.
  • 8If necessary, smooth the meringues with a spatula. If there are any peaks or sharp edges on the mounds, wet a spoon and run it over the region to level it down as much as possible. Make careful to shake off any extra water from the spoon, though, so that the mounds don’t become too wet. 9 Bake the meringues for 2 hours at a low temperature. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake until the cookies are dry and light in color, about 15 minutes. When the “ice cream” is towards the end of its baking period, keep an eye on it to ensure that it does not turn golden brown
  • Allow the “ice cream” to cool before serving. When the meringue mounds are done baking, remove them from the oven and allow them to cool for 5 to 10 minutes on the baking sheet. Remove them off the sheet and serve them right away
  • Refrigerate any remaining “ice cream” in an airtight container for up to 3 days. It should be good for up to 3 weeks after being prepared.
