I patiently wait until the farmers markets are heaped high with a bewildering selection of heirloom tomatoes before I even consider it.

After all, once the BLT train gets rolling, it won’t stop until the first fall cold snap arrives and kills off the tomato plants in the process.

The Role of Each BLT Ingredient

When it comes to a sandwich as straightforward as a BLT, each ingredient plays an important function. Let’s take a look at each one and how you should go about shopping for it.

  • Topping with bacon: A BLT would be incomplete without salty, smokey bacon, and standard-cut bacon is the way to go. If you want more crunch than chew, choose a thinner cut of bacon that practically shatters when you bite into it. Thick-cut bacon has more chew than crunch when cooked. Avoid buying bacon in packets where the slices are piled exactly on top of each other, as they are often the thickest slices available. Lettuce: Some people love butter lettuce because of its delicate, delicious leaves, while others prefer shredded iceberg lettuce because of its maximum crunch. Choose romaine lettuce, which has a refreshing crisp and more taste than iceberg
  • This is the medium ground between the two extremes. One little tomato will suffice for a single sandwich on a single bun. Get the freshest produce you can find, which is generally found at farmers markets if you can make it there. Choose a kind that you enjoy eating out of hand rather than pulpier varieties such as San Marzano tomatoes that are wonderful for canning. The flavor of dry-farmed tomatoes, which tend to be more robust than those grown with irrigation, is one of my favorites when they’re in season. The One Knife You’ll Need for BLTs

In order to make BLTs, you only need one knife, and it isn’t your typical chef’s knife either. Instead, use a serrated knife, such as a bread knife, to cut the bread. With ease, the teeth of a serrated knife grab and tear through tomato skin, allowing you to cut slices without shattering or mangling the tomato itself. After you’ve finished assembling the sandwich, you may use the same knife to cut the BLT in two. To finish, just fold a stack of napkins and dive in, preferably with a drink of ice-cold lemonade or beer and some potato chips on the side to keep things interesting.

Then arrange the seasoned tomato slices in a single layer on top (there is no need to pat the top dry), cutting them in half if necessary to fit in a single layer on the top. Then, in two layers on top of the tomatoes, arrange three bacon strips, each cut in half. Close the sandwich by placing the second slice of bread mayonnaise-side down on top of the first. Cut the BLT sandwich in half. Gently push down on the top of the sandwich to make it a little more compact. Serve immediately after slicing in half with a sharp knife.

Juicy BLT Recipe

  • 8 slices thick-cut bacon, smoked or unsmoked
  • 16 slices thin-cut bacon
  • 8 slices thick-cut bacon
  • 2 heirloom tomatoes (in the summer, use larger vine tomatoes
  • In the winter, use smaller vine tomatoes)
  • 3 tblsp red wine vinegar
  • 1 12 tblsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • Flaky sea salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 4 slices excellent white bread (middle thickness, boule is preferred), generously toasted 14 cup mayonnaise
  • 6 butter lettuce leaves
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Preparation

  1. Fry the bacon in a large pan over high heat, working in batches if necessary, until it is golden brown, approximately 4 minutes total. On a large cutting board, transfer the bacon and, while the bacon is cooking, slice the tomato crosswise into thin rounds. Marinate with red wine vinegar, 1 tablespoon olive oil, salt and pepper on a dish for 30 minutes. Spread mayonnaise generously on one side of the bread, then drizzle with the remaining 1/2 tablespoon olive oil
  2. Repeat. Divide the tomatoes and a little of the vinegar marinade between two slices of toasted bread. Place the lettuce on top of the sandwich, and then arrange the bacon on the remaining slices of toast. Form sandwiches by placing the bacon-topped slices on top of the remaining toasts and pressing down firmly. Immediately cut in half and serve after squeezing to shut.

DIRECTIONS

Nothing is more depressing than a wet sandwich or one that is flavorless and boring! Here, I’ll teach you how to prepare a wonderfully toasted, crispy-yet-tender, juicy and drippy avocado Bacon Lettuce and Tomato Sandwich, along with all of the tips and techniques you need. The original post was made on May 11, 2012. In college, Eric and his friend Brian started the Sandwich Club, which continues to this day.

  1. In this club, there were only two persons, and for good reason: one sandwich was not enough to satisfy a hungry lunchtime appetite, but two sandwiches was too much to handle.
  2. Sandwiches were made at every meeting of the sandwich club, and they were always three sandwiches.
  3. The ultimate and unspoken objective of the sandwich club was to double its membership by marrying two sandwich-loving ladies.
  4. So Eric and Brian tracked down my roommate Sarah and myself, and the three of us rode off into the sunset as a group.

  10. My friends, this is a straightforward sandwich.
  11. Let’s break it down!

The Bread

Ultimately, the quality of a sandwich is determined by the quality of the bread used to make it. I recommend using a robust white loaf of bread for the ultimate BLT. Some claim that the bread is too thin and that a robust French or Italian loaf is required to withstand the weight of all that luscious tomato. I believe this is incorrect. The crusts are too chewy for my taste. The edge crust should be beautiful and soft; the more tender the edge crust, the easier it is to bite into. (This is also one of my most important suggestions for obtaining the Best French Toast.) If you take a mouthful of those chewy crusts, it will spoil your first taste faster than you can say “gnawing.” But we’re not just dumping the ingredients on ordinary bread, oh no.

  • I didn’t say it was the lowest in calories; I claimed it was the best BLT.
  • (Butter, making everything better, you say?
  • It is important not to over toast your bread!
  • Just a beautiful, light, golden touch of toast and you are set to go.

No, thank you very much. (Does anybody else have this experience? When I’ve told this to Eric in the past, he hasn’t had a clue what I’m talking about, but whenever I eat a toasted sandwich, I have to be cautious not to shred my own mouth. So, please, no heavy toasting for me, thank you very much.)

The Sauce

MAYONNAISE. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: mayonnaise is, by a long shot, God’s greatest gift to the condiment realm. I’m not kidding. It is the ideal seal for a variety of sandwiches since it is creamy, smooth, and just the right amount of tangy. A good BLT sandwich is no exception. It’s possible that you’re thinking there’s too much mayo on this bread. You are completely incorrect. When it comes to BLTs, if you are not a “mayonnaise person,” I’m sorry to inform that you may simply not be a BLT person.

Here are a few different alternatives.

Other sauce options for your BLT include: These are listed in the order in which I’m most looking forward to testing them out next:

  • This BLT would be fantastic if it were served with Garlic Aioli. (A note to all those who despise mayonnaise: aioli is simply mayonnaise that has been enhanced with garlic and lemon.) sorrynotsorry
  • Combine 2 tablespoons mayonnaise and 1 tablespoon of this Balsamic Reduction in a small mixing bowl. Alternatively, prepare a traditional BLT with mayonnaise and then sprinkle the entire sandwich with a Balsamic Reduction before sealing your sandwich. That would be just incredible
  • Combine 2 tablespoons mayonnaise and 1/2 or 1 tablespoon mustard in a mixing bowl. I’m not a fan of squirting straight up mustard over my BLT, but mixing a bit into your mayonnaise to spice it up is OK in my opinion. Regular old French’s or Dijon will suffice
  • Sriracha mayonnaise is optional. Oh, I really enjoy this stuff. Make a small batch with 2 teaspoons sriracha and 2 tablespoons mayonnaise and build on it from there according to your preferences
  • Fry sauce: combine equal parts ketchup and mayonnaise in a mixing bowl
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise and 1 tablespoon Buttermilk Ranch Dressing are combined in a small mixing bowl. Then top your sandwich with a sprig of fresh dill. YES
  • Garlic sauce made with just a few ingredients: 4 tablespoons mayonnaise (or mayonnaise and sour cream), 2 tablespoons mustard (or mustard and mustard), and 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

The Lettuce

When it comes to lettuce, the amount of crunch you want is strongly tied to the type of lettuce you pick. I like the color of the green leaf. It’s green enough to make you feel good about yourself, but not so crunchy that you’re overwhelmed and can’t hear anything that’s occurring on around you when you take a mouthful. Romaine is the second option on my list. If you’re in a hurry, regular iceberg will suffice!

The Tomato

The tomato is undoubtedly the most crucial component of a BLT, mostly due to the fact that there are so many ways for it to go wrong! Is it possible that you’ve had a tomato that was predominantly pink rather than red? Ugh. (Hint: You can get them at Taco Bell any day of the week.) Tomatoes are responsible for the taste. If you don’t have access to excellent tomatoes, my recommendation is to wait until summer or, if possible, to cultivate your own. Tomatoes from your own garden are out of this planet!

  1. Any sort of tomato will suffice, provided it is completely ripe, which isn’t always the case.
  2. When it comes to tomatoes, my recommendation for the greatest BLT is to slice them about 3/8 inch thick (not exactly 1/2 inch, but more than 1/4 inch) and lay them out on paper towels for a couple of minutes.
  3. The other thing to keep in mind is that you MUST salt and pepper your tomato before sealing your sandwich.
  4. What is a tomato if it isn’t seasoned with salt and pepper?

The Bacon

The most important guideline to follow when it comes to bacon is that there needs to be a ridiculous amount of it. My other guideline is to only use thinly sliced bacon. Get the thick-cut bacon out of here as soon as possible. I enjoy thick cut to eat alongside my eggs at morning, but I don’t want to have to chew through a huge slab in my BLT. My ideal crispy strips are paper thin and SHATTER in my mouth as I bite into them.

We aren’t scrimping on anything: rather of using thick cut bacon, I advocate layering on even MORE layers of thin cut bacon. (This is the same reasoning that underpins mySmashburgers.) Say no to large thick burgers. Two smashed burgers is considerably better.)

The Avocado

I’m sorry to break the news to you, but it’s no longer a BLT. Sorry, Grannie BLT, but the world has progressed to the point that avocados are now readily available practically everywhere in the United States of America. These are the times we live in now. BLT, I know it’s not your fault that avocados weren’t available while you were putting your makeup on, and we don’t hold that against you. However, it is past time to move on. From here on forward, you’re either a BLTA or you’re out. (Is it BALT, or is it BALT?

  1. Make sure your avocado is perfectly ripe before eating it.
  2. If you want to go the additional mile, you may season it with salt and pepper as well as the herbs.
  3. The final requirement is that you must gently press down and slice the cake in two before serving.
  4. I’ve had enough of being the boss today, I think.
  5. In order to get this sandwich down your throat without slicing it, you may have to unhinge your jaw, snake-like, to get it down.

How to make a BLT next level

Some tweaks and additions to consider are listed below. This is the sandwich you’ve been looking for! Allowing some food blogger to dictate your actions is not a good idea.

  • Sprouts and a fried egg can be added. YUM
  • Pickled cherry peppers should be used, as should roasted red peppers, and pimento cheese should be used in place of mayonnaise. OMG, I DEMAND THIS. Cheddar cheese is a kind of cheese. Feta. Provolone. Goat cheese is a type of cheese made from goats. Muenster. Mozzarella. You definitely can’t go wrong with this place
  • Preparation: Make fried green tomatoes and substitute them for the tomatoes
  • Radishes that have been thinly cut

Finally, I had to offer you an old BLT photo from when I originally blogged about BLTs back in 2012. I hope you enjoy it. My very first sandwich on the blog was a BLAT with Garlic Aioli and Feta cheese, and it was the first thing I ever uploaded. I served it with this Focaccia Bread, which was really delicious! However, if you want to throw some feta on my BLT, I won’t say no! I can’t post a BLT recipe on my blog without include this quote: “True love is the best thing that has ever happened to anyone!”.

This is an excellent mutton lettuce and tomato sandwich in which the mutton is lean and the tomato is ripe.both of which are perky!

  • 2 slices thick hearty white bread
  • 4 tablespoons soft butter
  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise OR other sauce*
  • 4 slices thick sliced bacon
  • 2 slices thick slices sturdy white bread Green leaf lettuce, 1 wonderfully ripe tomato, 1/2 perfectly ripe avocado, salt, and pepper
  • 2-4 pieces green leaf lettuce
  • To begin, cook your bacon until crispy. It is extremely recommended that you bake your bacon! The cleanup is far less difficult. To find out more, please visit this page. How to Cook Bacon in the Oven. When the bacon is crispy (but not TOO crispy! ), remove it from the pan and place it on a dish lined with paper towels. Cut each piece of bacon in half, resulting in 8 strips of bacon. Keep warm until you’re ready to put it all together. While the bacon is frying, you may start on the bread.   • To prepare your avocado, cut it in half and then slice one side into strips. Assemble your sandwich by doing so: Spread roughly 1 and 1/2 teaspoons mayonnaise* on your toasted bread and toast it for another minute. To finish, garnish with lettuce fronds. After that, add 2 tomato slices that have been resting on a paper towel for a few minutes at the very least. Season the tomatoes with salt and pepper, then add the bacon in its whole. You should have a total of 8 half-strips of bacon on hand. Top the bacon with avocado pieces and pile them on top. If you’d like, season with a bit extra salt and pepper to taste. Spread the mayonnaise or whatever sauce you’re using on the second piece of toasted bread and set aside. Place the top of the sandwich on top and gently push down. To cut the sandwich in half, use a sharp serrated knife to slice it in two. This recipe produces 1 delicious sandwich. Eat straight away

However, it is a standard BLT that is self-explanatory; the Ultimate, the finest BLT Sandwich, on the other hand, requires a little more description. Thick-cut bacon, as opposed to ordinary bacon (at least, that’s where I tend to go most of the time), cooked to the precise degree of crispness, is the key to this dish. Purchasing high-quality bacon rather than everyday bacon is well worth the additional few dollars in this case. While making the sandwich, you will also use mayonnaise to griddle the bread (again, use a high-quality mayonnaise for this step!) Hellman’s is a restaurant where you can never go wrong).

BLT Recipe Ideas:

Here are some suggestions for switching up your BLTS:

  • Add grilled or caramelized onions, or a thin slice of raw onion
  • Season with salt and pepper. You may substitute arugula or watercress, or a spinach and watercress combination, in place of the basic lettuce. In addition, you may incorporate a sautéed thin chicken cutlet, or a piece of broiled or grilled salmon fillet (which reminds me a little of a Cobb salad sandwich)
  • Pancetta should be substituted for the bacon. A piece of avocado or guacamole can be added, or you can quickly whip up some guacamole-like mash by mashing up some avocado with lime juice and perhaps some chopped scallion or minced cilantro
  • To make the mayo, combine it with some smoked paprika (pimenton), puréed chipotle in adobo sauce, harissa, chopped fresh basil, cilantro, or another fresh herb of your choosing (in this post, there are two video versions: regular mayonnaise and chipotle mayonnaise, which may be served with guacamole). Alternatively, try Sriracha mayo. Place a cooked egg on top
  • Add a slice or a smear of cheese to half of the slices (on the top as you brown the bottom) while the bread is browning. You may use any cheese you like (cheddar, Monterey jack, brie, or goat cheese) and brown it until the cheese is melted and bubbly. To build the BLTs, gently mayo one side of each of the remaining four slices of bread and place them in the pan for 1 to 2 minutes, or until the cheese begins to melt slightly.

After removing the bacon to a plate lined with paper towels to drain, cut each piece in half crosswise
  • Each slice of bread should have around 1 teaspoon of mayonnaise spread on one side. Using nonstick cooking spray, coat a large skillet and heat over medium heat until hot. Set aside as many slices of bread as will fit on the skillet and griddle them until the mayonnaise side of the bread is beautifully browned, about 1 minute each slice of bread Remove the bread from the skillet and set it aside to cool browned side up while you griddle up the remaining pieces. Place 4 of the toast slices, browned side down, on a cutting board and set aside. Sprinkle each piece of bread with a pinch of salt and pepper, then top each slice of tomato with three half slices of bacon and a couple of leaves of lettuce, if desired. Make generous spreads of the remaining mayo over the non-browned sides of the remaining slices of bread, then pile them on top of the sandwiches with the browned side facing up.
