Grilled Cheese In The Oven
Fall is not one of my favorite seasons, and I must say that it is not one of mine either. Despite the fact that I grew up in Ohio, I am definitely not a cold weather gal. Winter has left my fingers and toes feeling like ice, and the dismal skies have made me want to stay in my comfortable, warm bed till spring comes around again. Fall comfort food, on the other hand, is something I really enjoy! Soups and chilis are in charge, and thus early in the season, all of our old favorites are feeling fresh again — even the classictomato basil soup served with grilled cheese sandwiches, which is a basic.
Oh, absolutely, if you were unfamiliar with this approach (as I was, to be honest), you are in for a VERY pleasant surprise!
To make sure that everyone had a nice and fresh grilled cheese sandwich with their bowl of soup, I used to have two pans on the burner at the same time, as well as the panini press, cooking at all times.
Not sure if I looked on Google for a solution or looked on Pinterest, but when I came across the sheet pan grilled cheese in the oven approach, I couldn’t believe how EASY it was.

Baked Grilled Cheese Ingredients
When cooking any form of grilled cheese sandwich, it is critical to use the freshest ingredients possible. Wheat bread is preferred by my family, and I like to use salted butter to provide a little additional taste. Also, there will be no more of those flimsy American singles around here! Yes, I used to consume them as well — until I discovered that they are only supposed to have a minimum of 51 percent actual cheese and may contain as many as 15 different additional substances. In any case, one approach calls for the use of two half sheet pans, with the second pan being put on top of the sandwiches to expedite the cooking process and reduce cooking time. You may give it a shot if you want, but I didn’t find this strategy to be particularly efficient.
- Aside from that, I was left with more equipment to clean up — and you know how much I enjoy cleaning dishes.
- Each sandwich is as simple as spreading softened butter on the outsides of two slices of sourdough bread, layering on the inside with the necessary amount of slices of cheese, and placing them on a baking sheet.

To be honest, I felt stupid looking at a recipe for grilled cheese sandwiches, but it was a good decision. As a side note, I was embarrassed by how long it took me to get this correct, LOL. I had no idea that the bottom of the sandwich would be the first to brown. As a result, the first time I fried them, I was too focused on getting the top golden brown that the bottom was burned. Once the bottom was done, I turned them over and continued to cook the other side for the same length of time as the first.
- It worked the third time around:-) I turned the sandwiches when the bottoms were done and examined the sandwiches after another 2-3 minutes.
- Six to eight minutes are required for the entire cooking process.
- These are fantastic.
- So, I’m a slow learner, but they are excellent resources!
- I’m going to say it again and again!
- Until high school, I had never had them any other way than this.
- If you cook them this way, though, keep a tight eye on them since they cook _quickly.
The most butter should be used around the crust and little to none in the centre for optimum results, according to this rule.
If you are using a thick slice of cheese or a pair of American singles, you may wish to melt the cheese first while keeping the sandwich open-faced before sealing it and baking/broiling it as directed.

Advertisement After reading the reviews and attempting this recipe multiple times, I’ve come to a few conclusions.
- The amount of time it takes depends on the type of bread (e.g., wheat white, etc.), the thickness of the bread slices, and the temperature of the cheese when it is placed in the oven.
- It will not melt the cheese if it is still at refrigerator temperature when the bread is browned.
- White bread takes 5-6 minutes on each side for me, while wheat bread takes 3-4 minutes on each side for me, depending on my oven.
- On top of the cheese, place another slice of buttered bread, butter-side down.
- It’s now flawless every time for me, and I’m not even trying.
- Mine is just approximately 6 months old at the time of writing.
- When I was in school, this is how they prepared it for us.
- Honestly, it’s quite delicious!
These sandwiches have a wonderful feel to them.
In contrast to the soft and mushy texture of those cooked on the stove, they are crispy and tasty.
They’re fantastic.

It’s possible that grilled cheese from the oven will transform your life. Okay, it may seem a little theatrical, but this simple strategy has really transformed my life! With this approach, I am able to not only create sandwiches for the entire family (or entire party, see below for more information), but I am also able to tailor them to suit our individual preferences.

Sheet pan grilled cheese
Once the weather starts to drop down, we start making grilled cheese sandwiches once a week to go with a huge pot of soup. The kids really like the ritual (who am I kidding? I do it because I genuinely enjoy it myself!). As soon as I started baking the sandwiches in the oven, things changed drastically. I no longer had to worry about tending to batches of food on the burner. But, even better, now we can all customize our own grilled cheese sandwiches!
Gourmet grilled cheese sandwich
Aside from that, this process makes it quite simple to prepare agourmetgrilled cheese (oh la la! You may use any number of ingredients to make the sandwiches, including garlicky sautéed greens (one of my faves), tomatoes and basil (Ella’s favorite), ham or turkey (James’s favorite), roasted mushrooms, artichoke hearts, sauerkraut, and so on. You have the option of doing a single filling or a mix of fillings (such as ham and sauerkraut, or greens with sun-dried tomatoes).
As well as cheddar cheese, you can use any other melty cheese (or cheeses) of your choice, including Gruyere, Comté, and American. I laid out a few different fillings and let my family and friends to assemble their own sandwiches.
Oven baked grilled cheese for a crowd
Speaking of friends, if you haven’t ever baked a large batch of grilled cheese sandwiches for a get-together, you haven’t experienced life (oh fine, thatmight be a bit dramatic). Oven grilled cheese is a simple and delicious way to serve a large group of people, whether as a relaxed meal with a large pot of soup (think game day!) or as a finger food appetizer. Fill the grilled cheese sandwiches with something fancy, such as caramelized onions and fig jam, and then cut the sandwiches into little pieces before presenting them as an attractive starter to a dinner.
How to make a grilled cheese in the oven
The procedure is straightforward. Begin with a loaf of your favorite bread (gluten-free, please, for me) and some melted butter (check out my tips below for softening butter if you forget to leave it out). Each piece of bread should have one side of butter spread on it. Place half of the bread pieces, buttered side down, on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil (I spritz the pan with cooking spray to ensure that nothing sticks). After that, add a piece of cheese on top. Fillings can be added at this point if desired.
The result is grilled cheese sandwiches that are warm and cheesy, but not too greasy or heavy on the fat.
Oven grilled cheese tips:
- Because broiler temperatures vary from oven to oven, keep an eye on the sandwiches until you develop a feel for your particular model. Furthermore, white bread tends to toast more quickly than whole wheat or gluten-free bread. This recipe will need the use of a cookie sheet. In this case, I recommend using a heavy, rimmed baking sheet
- If you forget to leave the butter out to soften, microwave it in 5-second intervals, checking after each, until it’s just soft enough to spread
- You can use any kind of melty cheese that you choose. The cheddar or an Alpine type cheese, such as Emmentaler, Gruyere, or Comté, is my preferred choice, although American cheese is acceptable as well

How to make grilled cheese in oven
This method of making grilled cheese sandwiches in the oven allows you to create as many grilled cheese sandwiches as you like at the same time. In fact, you may make as many sandwiches as you like as long as your oven has enough space. The precise quantity depends on the size of the loaf and the temperature of the oven. (Because our oven is a non-standard size, we can fit approximately 8 sandwiches in it at a time.) The main concept is as follows:
- Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius). The bread is toasted until it is golden brown under high heat
- Spread the butter on the bread before putting together the sandwiches. The buttered sides are placed outside, and the shredded cheese is placed within. Shredded cheese (as opposed to slices) creates the tastiest melty sandwiches. Bake for 6 minutes on one side and then another 6 minutes on the other side until done. Check to check how well the bread has browned
- If the potatoes are not quite golden brown, continue to cook for a few more minutes. Is the bread starting to brown? If not, toast for about 1 minute per side until lightly browned if necessary.

Grilled Cheese in the Oven
- This hearty dish of grilled cheese and tomato soup is a staple throughout the bitterly cold and snow-covered winter that I hope is finally coming to an end in these parts. I remember this dish being routinely served for lunch when I was a youngster, and it was one of the first meals my siblings and I learned to prepare for ourselves as we grew up. Whenever possible, my mother would make our toast in the oven rather than the toaster. I’m not sure why she did this, maybe it was to save time or to produce more slices at a time, but whatever of the reason, I still prefer my bread baked in the oven. It appears to be a little chewier and sweeter than usual, and I enjoy how the butter penetrates into the bread. Having said that, when I discovered the notion for creating grilled cheese sandwiches in the oven, I thought it was simply brilliant and had to give it a shot immediately. Since then, I’ve experimented with it in a variety of ways, and it’s fantastic! The cheese melts better on the inside, and I can easily make six sandwiches at a time on my baking sheet. The sandwiches become somewhat chewy and appear to be sweeter as well. You’ll never make them in a frying pan again after you’ve tried it, I’m sure of it! These are very simple to put together: Begin with a loaf of your favorite bread, some cheese, and a pat of butter. Schwebel’s Sweet Wheat bread is my favorite bread to use with these sandwiches (although I’ve also used whole grain bread and Italian bread, and they’re all delicious), and because I’ve never been a big fan of the taste of processed cheese slices, I prefer to use a high-quality cheddar cheese slice instead of a sliced ham. Although ham or sliced turkey are optional and excellent, my favorite way to enjoy this dish is just with the gooey cheese. 2 slices of bread each sandwich, about 1 Tablespoon of butter per sandwich, and at least one slice of cheese per sandwich are required, depending on how many sandwiches you’re cooking. Now, I like to melt my butter a little and brush it over the outside of each slice of bread, but this isn’t absolutely required if you like to spread unmelted butter on your bread with a knife instead of using a brush. Place them on a baking pan and set them aside. They are ready to go into the oven after they have been brushed with butter, topped with cheese, and then brushed with additional butter. Using a preheated 425 degree oven, bake on one side for approximately 6 minutes, checking frequently to ensure it has reached your desired level of “toastiness.” Then gently turn the pan over and bake for another 3 minutes or so, checking to see whether the “brown-ness” is to your liking. These are really wonderful and delectable! Print

All throughout, the cheese becomes hot and bubbling, and the bread becomes somewhat chewy and little sweeter in various ways. How to make perfect grilled cheese in the oven
When it comes to feeding your hungry family, entertaining guests, or simply needing the melting goodness of gourmet toasties, producing the ideal grilled cheese may appear to be a straightforward operation. However, it is not as simple as it appears. Getting it correctly, on the other hand, takes some practice. And what is a person to do if they do not have access to a sandwich press or if they need to prepare six or more sandwiches? Then this small tip for making grilled cheese in the oven will come in helpful.
What makes an amazing grilled cheese sandwich?
In addition to the traditional grilled cheese sandwich produced with a single piece of bread and cheese spread over the top, there are grilled cheese sandwiches made in a frying pan. We, on the other hand, feel that the tastiest grilled cheese sandwiches are made by pressing two slices of bread together tightly. Ideally, you want a lovely golden color on the exterior of the sandwich, which may be accomplished best by applying heat and even pressure on the sandwich, such as you would with a sandwich press.
How to make grilled cheese in the oven
If you need to feed a large number of hungry mouths at the same time, this way of baking grilled cheese is ideal. To prepare grilled cheese in the oven, begin by gathering all of the necessary components.
A grilled cheese toastie is made out of two pieces of bread, a generous amount of butter, and (obviously) shredded cheddar cheese. Mild cheddars, manchegos, and gruyeres are among the cheeses that melt well when melted together. Then take the following steps:
- Cooking Instructions: Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius (180 degrees Celsius if you have a NEFF oven) and heat one flat metal baking tray in it until it is hot. Spread another piece of baking paper on a second inverted flat metal baking tray (with the rim of the tray resting on your work surface), and set this aside. Brush a little amount of butter onto one – or both – sides of your bread and set it on a cookie sheet butter side down
- Place a thick slice of your favorite cheese on top of the bread
- Then repeat the process. Place another slice of bread on top, butter side up, if you are just buttering one side of the bread. Removing your cookie tray from the preheated oven while wearing oven gloves is recommended. Placing your heated tray on top of your sandwiches and gently pressing down is recommended. Return both trays to the preheated oven while holding them together. Place the pan in the oven for approximately 15 minutes, or until the bread is toasted and the cheese has melted
You should be able to produce roughly 6 grilled cheese sandwiches at a time using this method for producing ideal grilled cheese sandwiches in the oven, depending on the bread you choose and the size of your cookie trays.
Before you leave, we have a question…Would you put mayonnaise on your grilled cheese?
For some people, the idea of placing mayonnaise on their grilled cheese sandwiches would be considered a violation of a fundamental rule of sandwich making. Some people, on the other hand, think that mayonnaise is an absolutely necessary element. If you’re interested in giving this unique proposal a try, simply substitute a high-quality mayonnaise for the butter spread on the outside of the sandwich. This, according to legend, will give it an even, golden color and will prevent the bread from drying out, so keeping it soft and fluffy throughout.

Ingredients
- 2 pieces of bread
- 2 teaspoons of melted butter
- 2 slices of cheese, around 1.5 ounces (we used Provolone)
- 2 teaspoons of salt and pepper
Instructions
- Cooking rack in toaster oven should be set to the lowest position. To begin, insert an empty baking sheet into your toaster oven and set the temperature to 425°F or 450°F on the “Bake” setting. (See the Note.) Butter the outside of each piece of bread to prevent it from drying out. Place one piece of bread, buttered side down, on a cutting board and top with cheese slices. Repeat with the remaining bread slices. Place the last bread piece, buttered side up, on top of the salad. Carefully remove the prepared baking pan from the oven using oven mitts. Placing the sandwich on the pan and putting it back in the toaster oven Cook the sandwich for approximately 4 minutes, or until the bottom is toasted and browned. Using tongs, carefully lift the pan out of the toaster oven and carefully flip the sandwich with a spatula before returning it to the toaster oven for another 3 to 4 minutes or until the second side is browned and the cheese has melted
- Allow it cool somewhat before slicing in two and devouring
Notes
Temperature: While 450°F is a good temperature for our toaster ovens and many others, the temperature of toaster ovens varies. As a result, you may need to experiment a little with the temperature and time settings to discover the optimal settings for your little oven. Adjusting the temperature of your oven to 425°F or 400°F may be necessary if your oven is notoriously hot or if you’re using a convection toaster oven. Rack Positioning: If your toaster oven has different rack levels, you may experiment with the center rack positioning to see how it works for you before committing.
Bread Type:This recipe was developed and tested with a robust multi-grain loaf of bread as the base.
Toaster Oven in the Style of an Air-Fryer: The Air-Fry option with the temperature set to 350°F is recommended.
Place the sandwich in the air-fry basket and cook for 3 to 4 minutes, or until the top is golden and browned, before flipping it and cooking for another 1 minute or until the other side is golden and browned.

Ingredients
I prefer to utilize high-quality ingredients in my grilled cheese sandwiches, even though I normally keep things simple:
- Bread made from whole grains rather than spongy white bread that sticks to the roof of your mouth. It makes the sandwich’s edges very crispy and adds significantly to its taste. Thick pieces of provolone or cheddar cheese are excellent choices for the cheese. Shredded cheese should be avoided since it will melt too soon. You might also try thisToaster Oven Baked Grilled Cheeserecipe if you want to use shredded cheese. A few roasted sweet potato rounds (sounds funny, I know, but it’s so amazing!) and some garlicky toaster oven cooked broccoli (Broccoli + Cheese is always a fantastic combination!) can be added if an all-cheese sandwich feels a little too excessive. Alternatively, incorporate some fruit, like in thisGrilled Cheese with Apple and Havarti recipe. Finally, and maybe most importantly, just genuine butter — no margarine
How to make Grilled Cheese in a Toaster Oven
I begin by setting the cooking rack in the toaster oven to the lowest position, which is the part that is closest to the heat. Next, place your baking pan on the rack of your toaster oven and warm it on the “Bake” setting for a few minutes. By preheating the pan, you’re essentially generating a little griddle for your food. When it comes to getting the bread crisped and golden, this is your SECRET WEAPON! Then butter one side of each bread piece to make it look like a sandwich. Mayonnaise is also a good choice; we used it to make this Toasted Caprese Sandwich.
- To begin, I place the cooking rack in the bottom position of the toaster oven, which is the part that is closest to the heat. Place the baking pan on the rack of your toaster oven and warm the toaster oven on the “Bake” setting for a few minutes. It is possible to create a tiny griddle by preheating the pan. This is your SECRET WEAPON for crisping and golden-browning the bread. Afterwards, put butter on one side of each of the bread slices. The same goes for mayonnaise, which we used to make this Toasted Caprese Sandwich (see recipe below). For the sandwich’s construction, follow these steps:
When you’re done, carefully take the prepared pan from the oven with oven mitts or gloves. It’s going to be H-O-T, so be careful. Place your sandwich in the center of the pan and place the pan back in the toaster oven to toast. After just four minutes, the bottom bread slice should be gently browned on both sides (it will get toasted more in the next step). You’ll have to flip it over now! Yes, just as with a typical stovetop grilled cheese sandwich, you’ll need to turn your sandwich halfway through.
Carefully remove the heated pan from the oven and turn your sandwich with a spatula to finish cooking it.
Replacing the pan in the toaster oven will take three to four minutes, and your sandwich will be nicely toasted.
