I doubled the recipe and used about half the amount of mayonnaise and mustard (both Hellmans low-calorie varieties) and found that this was more than enough. I also took care to select a ham that was considered “upscale” to begin with. People who tried it liked it, but they didn’t rave about it like they did about the other items on the buffet.

Fortunately, my husband like the sandwich recipe, which was fortunate because we had a lot of leftovers.

This was fantastic! I did, however, make a few modifications. As a substitute for the ham, I used store-bought nacho chips, and as a substitute for the eggs, I used cake icing. I don’t care for mayonnaise, so I substituted chicken stock for it, and then I entirely skipped using any of the other ingredients stated in this recipe as well. Seriously, what is it about folks who dramatically alter a recipe and then leave nasty reviews that gets to me? You are completely unaware of the fact that, as soon as the formula is altered, you are no longer reviewing the same product.

What is Ham Salad?

Ham salad is a popular meal that is similar to schicken salad and tuna salad in taste and appearance. The major component, of course, is (cold) ham, which is blended with chopped veggies and relish before being mixed with a mayonnaise dressing. After being ground or diced, the ham is used as a spread for crackers or as the base for a ham salad sandwich on a piece of white bread. As previously said, it was during my college years that I first experienced it. The second (and third, and fourth, and fifth – you get the picture) occurrences occurred when I was a resident of Minnesota.

And I would unabashedly consume my body weight in it.

Ham Salad Recipe Variations

There are several varieties for ham salad, starting with the texture and progressing to the addition of other ingredients.

  • In traditional ham salad preparation, a meat grinder is used, but I don’t have one of those, so I just use my food processor to make it. You may make it smooth like pâté if you wish, but I prefer a texture that is between between paste-like and chunky. 1-2 hard-boiled eggs (thus the name Deviled Ham Salad), which provide another layer of flavor and are a terrific way to use up leftover Easter eggs, are called for in my recipe, but they may simply be eliminated without affecting the taste of the dish. However, I strongly advise you to leave them in. While dill pickle relish holds a special place in my heart, I believe that sweet relish is the way to go in this situation. The sweetness of the relish provides a wonderful counterpoint to the saltiness of the ham. It’s quite OK to substitute dill pickle relish if that’s what you like
  • However, I believe that the very first recipe for ham salad did not contain any of the ingredients I mentioned above. The only way I’ve ever eaten ham salad was with sweet pickle relish, chopped onion, and sliced celery. If you want to substitute anything else for the ham, I’ve heard that ground bologna or Spam work well
  • However, I’ve never tried either of those options.

  • Once everything has been mixed, you should have around 3-4 cups of the ground mixture, which should be enough to create about 10 sandwiches or an appetizer spread for a moderately sized group of people. Because my ham always has plenty of salt, I never add any additional salt because it would be too much. Before serving, give it a taste and adjust the salt to your preference. It is ideal if you allow this to sit in the refrigerator for at least a few hours before serving, so that all of the flavors can mingle together.

I can’t always be dressed in a sophisticated and posh manner. It’s simply not in my nature to do so. More often than not, you’ll find me in my Vans slip-ons rather than my stiletto heels. I would rather spend my time with friends and family at a cottage in the mountains or on the beach than go shopping at the most up-to-date stores in the city. And I’m a big fan of eating excellent old-fashioned favorites rather than fancy molecular food these days. After all, who wants to consume molecules? Oh, wait, I think that’s something we all do.

  • On a regular basis, I find myself reverting to my origins, to my childhood favorites.
  • I’ve always been a fan of any sandwich that has the word’salad’ at the end of the title, and I still am.
  • Salad de crabes.
  • Salad de viande de poulet.
  • In addition, potato chips and pickle chips are staples in my comfort zone.

I chopped the ham into bits and placed it in the processor bowl with the large blade, processing it for a few seconds each time. Don’t pulse the ingredients too much or you’ll end up with a thick paste. After that, everything else is placed in the bowl. Just a few more pulses and you’ll be finished! Make your sandwiches by assembling the ham salad first, then chilling it in the fridge for an hour to enable the flavors to emerge.

The dried onion flakes that are used in this ham salad recipe are the secret ingredient. I’ve tried it with fresh minced onion, with green onion, and with red onion, and none of them come close to the subtlety of the dried onion in flavor.
