How to make Meatball Subs

Begin by combining the ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, dried oregano, dried basil, onion powder, garlic powder, and pepper in a large mixing bowl until well combined. After that, roll the mixture into one-inch balls and brown them in a big pan over medium heat. Now add the spaghetti sauce and cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Now grease the buns and heat them in the broiler until they are lightly toasted. Afterwards, evenly distribute half of the shredded mozzarella on the bottoms of the sub rolls.

Finally, broil the sandwiches for a few seconds, just until the cheese is melted and the bread is gently toasted.

Fresh Italian parsley or freshly grated Parmesan cheese can be sprinkled on top when the dish is finished.

These hot-from-the-oven sandwiches require only three ingredients and can be prepared in 20 minutes, making them an excellent choice for hectic weekday dinners. Meatballs are cooked in our wonderful Italian sauce before being sandwiched between hot, cheesy garlic bread. We enjoyed this dish so much that we included it on the labels of our Prego® Italian Sauce, and we believe you will, too.

  • 1 box (11.75 ounces) Pepperidge Farm® Mozzarella and Garlic Bread
  • 1 cup Prego® Traditional Italian Sauce or your favorite Prego® Italian Sauce
  • 12 (1/2-ounce each) frozen fully-cooked beef meatballs

Instructions

  • You can make these sandwiches even more unique by adding even more cheese (try Parmesan or provolone), spinach, arugula, or freshly chopped basil on the top.
  • Step 1Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Take the bread out of the bag and set it aside. With a fork, carefully separate the two sides of bread. Stack the two bread halves, cut-side up, on a baking sheet and set aside. Step 2Bake for 10 minutes, or until the bread is well cooked
  • Remove from oven. The sauce and meatballs should be made while the oven is preheating. Quick Marinara Sauce

  • Process tomatoes in an immersion blender, food processor, or blender until they are mostly pureed, but still have the texture of chunky salsa. Alternatively, you may turn the tomatoes out into a basin and smash them with your hands (don’t throw away the juices)
  • Or In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium heat until shimmering. Once the oil is heated, add the garlic and sauté for just a few minutes, until it begins to turn softly golden—be careful not to let it burn! Place on a baking sheet and bake for 3 to 4 minutes, or until the nuts are lightly browned. Oven Baked Meatball Sandwiches Tips

In the event that you are serving sandwiches at a party or game night, or if you are packing them for a trip away from home, it may be beneficial to wrap each sandwich individually. This was something I liked to do with aluminum foil before baking. Here’s how it’s done:

  • Using a sheet of aluminum foil large enough to wrap the sandwich, make one for each sandwich. Use one sheet of aluminum foil and coat the top of the foil with cooking spray
  • Place a sandwich roll in the center of the foil and on top of the side that has been coated with cooking spray
  • Fill with meatballs and spaghetti sauce and bake for 30 minutes. Add some cheese on top
  • Fold one large corner of the aluminum foil fully over the top of the sandwich to seal it in place. Fold the left and right edges of the aluminum foil over the sandwich to enclose it. Then roll the sandwich up towards the top section of the foil to ensure that the entire sandwich is sealed in the foil. Bake for approximately 10-15 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit, or until the cheese is completely melted

How to Make a Homemade Meatball Sub

This trick was taught to me by an old Joy of Cooking cookbook, and I prefer it to breadcrumbs whenever possible. The meatballs can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve them to your guests. I would advise lightly warming them in the sauce on the stovetop before placing them to the rolls to prevent them from falling apart. Making sure all of the meatballs are approximately the same size is something I like to do with a standard cookie scoop.

My preference is to melt the cheese on the roll before adding the meatballs, but my husband prefers the cheese on top, so he will add the meatballs first, then the cheese, and then place it under the broiler until the cheese melts completely.

  • 2 pieces of bread
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, divided
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 clove minced garlic
  • 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil, divided
  • 8sandwich sandwiches or buns
  • 16 slices provolone cheese. 3/4pound ground beef, 3/4pound Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 1egg
  • 3 tablespoonsgrated parmesan cheese
  • 3 tablespoonschopped fresh parsley
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano. 1 1/2 cups marinara sauce.

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the slices of bread. Put a lid on the pan and leave it to sit for approximately 5 minutes, allowing the milk to soak into the bread. In the meantime, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a pan over medium-high heat until shimmering. Cook until the onions are soft, about 5 minutes. In the last 30 seconds of cooking, add the garlic cloves. Remove the pan from the heat and let it to cool slightly
  2. The bread should be crumbled with your hands or a potato masher once the milk has been soaked into the bread. In the same bowl, combine the ground beef, sausage, egg, parmesan, parsley, salt, paprika, oregano, and onion combination that has been cooked until soft. Hands or a wooden spoon can be used to gently incorporate everything, taking care not to overwork the meat. Dividing the ingredients into approximately 30 meatballs with a 1 tablespoon scoop (or your hands) is recommended. Roll them into balls with slightly moistened palms
  3. In a large skillet, heat the remaining tablespoon of oil over medium heat until shimmering. Working in two or three batches, add the meatballs to the skillet and cook until browned on both sides, about 5 minutes total time. Because they will not be fully cooked, this should only take around 5 minutes each batch of potatoes. After you’ve removed the meatballs to a dish, continue the process with the remaining meatballs. Once all of the meatballs have been browned, return them all to the skillet. Gently fold in the marinara sauce until everything is well-coated. Allow for about 15 minutes of simmering time, uncovered, on medium heat with the meatballs in the sauce
  4. Remove from the fire. Turn the oven to the broil setting. Using a big baking sheet, spread out your rolls and open them up. Each bun should have two pieces of cheese on it
  5. Preheat the broiler until the cheese has melted and the buns are toasted, about 5 minutes. Pay close attention to them because this will just take a minute
  6. To serve, spoon some of the meatballs and sauce onto each roll and roll up.
