Crockpot Hot Shredded Chicken Sandwich Recipe

Traditions from the United Kingdom have readily crossed the Atlantic to become part of American culture. When a sandwich was first served in the United States, no one could say exactly when it happened. However, in 1837, Eliza Leslie was the first person to publish a sandwich recipe in her book Miss Leslie’s Directions For Cookery. One of the sandwiches, a ham sandwich with mustard on lightly buttered bread, has remained popular over the decades. Sandwiches were standard supper fare and trip food by the late 1860s, according to Mercuri.

Shredded Chicken Sandwiches Ingredients

  • The following ingredients: (1) 50 oz can of boneless chicken breast, drained
  • (2) 12 oz cans of white chicken breast, drained
  • (1) can of cream of chicken soup
  • Ritz crackers (crushed)
  • 2 Ritz cracker sleeves 1 heaping teaspoon of chicken bouillon dissolved in 14 cup of water (This Bouillonis the BEST! )
  • 14 cup of Stovetop stuffing, dry mix (This Stovetop stuffingis the BEST! (There is no need to pack the stuffing to the brim.)

Whenever I’m buying a large can of boneless chicken, I opt for the “boned chicken” variety. It’s less expensive than entirely white meat, which is rare. Despite the fact that this is shredded, the can appears to be a little disorganized at first glance. If you like only white meat, go ahead and eat it. It will only be a little more expensive. Make cleanup a breeze by lining a crockpot with a slow cooker liner. Combine all of the ingredients in a large mixing bowl. (Make certain that the chicken cans have been well emptied!) Shake things up a little bit.

  • They will disintegrate as the sauce boils down.
  • (You may also leave it running on low all day.) Once this is completed, it is ready to be served on buns.
  • If you enjoy your shredded chicken a little runny, as I do, this recipe is for you.
  • This dish is ideal for a potluck gathering.
  • You’ll have excellent leftover shredded chicken sandwich filling the next day, too!
  • Enjoy!

AboutMary

Many people have grown up eating shredded chicken sandwiches, which is why this recipe for shredded chicken sandwiches is so popular. Chicken, creamy soup, and crumbled crackers or potato chips join together to form a delectable chicken and cracker or chip sandwich. If you are from Ohio, you may be familiar with shredded chicken sandwiches, which are served on a bun. It’s a traditional recipe that’s served at family gatherings, drive-ins, and, according to what I’ve heard, certain fast food establishments in the state.

There are enough sandwiches for 6-8 people, but you can easily double the recipe to feed a bigger group. However, my family like to use potato chips as the filler instead of crackers or bread crumbs, which may be found in numerous variations of this dish.

What you need

Chicken– You need need cooked and shredded chicken for this recipe. Alternatively, pre-cooked chicken, such as rotisserie chicken, can be used for the slow cooker. If you don’t like cream of chicken soup, you may substitute cream of mushroom or cream of celery soup, which are also delicious. Use your favorite potato chips; I prefer wavy potato chips, but feel free to use anything you choose. In fact, I enjoy adding sour cream and onion chips to my recipes for a little more taste. Some individuals like crushed crackers such as Saltines, Ritz, or Tollhouse, while others prefer whole crackers.

These components are added to the mixture to serve as a filler and to give it a bit more heft.

Chicken Broth– A little amount of chicken broth can be used to thin down the mixture.

Salt, pepper, garlic powder, and poultry seasoning are among the seasonings used.

How to make shredded chicken sandwiches

  1. Combine:In a slow cooker, combine cream of chicken soup, chicken broth, poultry seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until well combined and creamy. Serve on a hamburger bun or a sandwich roll while still hot. Pickles, or even a sprinkle of broken chips or crackers, can be added to the sandwich for extra flavor.

Cooking chicken in the slow cooker

If you choose to utilize this approach, place the chicken in a slow cooker with 1 can of cream of chicken soup and cook on low for 8 hours. Cook the chicken for 3 hours on high heat before shredding it. Continue to prepare according to the recipe.

How to store

Any leftovers can be kept in an airtight jar in the refrigerator for up to 3 days after preparation. Cook for approximately 10 minutes in a pot on the stovetop.

Recipe tips

  • In order to add a bit extra taste, consider replacing the crackers with sour cream and onion potato chips. When possible, prepare the mixture the day before and then heat it in the slow cooker just before serving.

Any of these options will suffice.

Fast and Easy Shredded Chicken Sandwiches

Here’s a recipe for shredded chicken sandwiches that’s both quick and simple to make. These sandwiches are quite popular in this neighborhood (Ohio). From parties to potlucks, you’ll find them being served at many types of occasions. They’re also available for purchase at most neighborhood ice cream shops. Many households have their own secret shredded chicken recipes that they keep to themselves. Some cooks insist on roasting and deboning a whole chicken before stuffing it with a variety of fillings, ranging from breadcrumbs to saltine crackers.

The whole preparation time is around 20 minutes.

Step 1: Preperation

For this recipe, I use canned chicken that I purchased from a local wholesale food wholesaler. It weighs 48 ounces, and the chicken is simmered in chicken broth. Cream of chicken soup is the only additional item that you will be using in your recipe. The proportion that I’ve discovered to be the most effective is three parts chicken to one part soup. The amount of soup I use is one and a half 10 ounce cans of chicken broth for every 48 ounce chicken can I use. Thus, 2 cans of chicken and 3 cans of soup combine to make a delicious meal that wastes no time at all!

  • Each can of chicken will yield around 16 to 20 sandwiches per can.
  • After the mixture comes to a boil, decrease the heat to a low level and continue to cook for 15 minutes.
  • Any large chunks that have remained can be broken up using the spoon that you are now using to whisk the mixture together.
  • Huge amounts of coffee may be prepared in an electric roaster, which will serve a large number of people.
  • Place a dollop of the mixture on a sandwich bread and you’re good to go!

Ohio Shredded Chicken Sandwiches

We’ve all had chicken sandwiches before, but unless you’re from Ohio – or unless you happen to travel there frequently – you’ve probably never had them quite like this before. It’s important to understand that this isn’t just any chicken sandwich; it’s an Ohio Shredded Chicken Sandwich, and it’s about so much more than just the chicken! You may find it at both baseball games and potlucks, and while it’s inexpensive and simple to prepare, it’s the unique blend of ingredients that distinguishes it as a classic.

Certainly, shredded chicken is used in Ohio Chicken Sandwiches, but they also invariably feature either filling or crushed Ritz crackers, or a combination of the two.

Consider a chicken sloppy joe, but in a creamy, carb-heavy, chicken form.

How to Make Juicy and Tender Chicken in Under 1 Hour

How to prepare a batch of soft and tasty shredded chicken on the stove in less than an hour is demonstrated in this video. If you’d like to prepare shredded chicken in a slow cooker, check out our Slow Cooker Shredded Chicken Recipe for more information. Boneless chicken thighs are made soft and moist by gradually boiling them in a fragrant cooking broth for an extended period of time. This easy recipe may be used to make shredded chicken tacos, excellent enchiladas, soups, chicken salad, chicken sandwiches, and more!

This Recipe Calls For 4 Simple Steps

  • In a broth made with water or stock, spices, onion, and garlic, gently simmer chicken thighs or chicken breasts
  • Remove from heat. Cooked chicken should be shredded. Reduce the cooking liquid by simmering it until it is reduced by half. Extra flavor and moisture can be added by tossing the shredded chicken with the concentrated cooking liquid

Ingredients

For creating shredded chicken at home, we need the following ingredients: onion, garlic, a bay leaf, cumin, salt, and pepper to taste. Our favorite way to make this dish is with chicken thighs since they are more tender than chicken breasts, but there is no reason why chicken breasts or a combination of chicken breasts and thighs would not work just as well. Please keep in mind that our recipe is more of a suggestion than a recipe. Experiment with different tastes and spices to find out what you like most.

More Tips

We boil the chicken for a long period of time to achieve the most tender results. Water is used as the cooking liquid, and it quickly absorbs the taste of the onion, garlic, and chicken that have been added to the pot. We add just enough water to cover the chicken, then reduce the heat to a low simmer and cook for approximately 30 minutes, or until the chicken is extremely soft and falling apart. The chicken should be removed from the now very delicious cooking stock and shredded once it has finished cooking.

  1. Toss the chicken with roughly a cup of the concentrated broth after it has been poured over it.
  2. You now have chicken that can be used for a variety of dishes like chicken nachos, buffalo dip, chicken-topped pizza, quesadillas, soup, sandwiches, and more.
  3. The flavor of shredded turkey is incredible!
  4. There are many ways to utilize it, including as a light soup or as broth in other dishes.
  5. It soaks up any broth that was initially given to the chicken during its time in the refrigerator or freezer.
  6. Then we shred the chicken until it’s moist, tender, and just delectable.

Since publishing this recipe in 2015, we’ve included a cooking video and revised the instructions to make them clearer. – Adam and Joanne are a married couple.

How to Make Tender Flavorful Shredded Chicken

When it comes to creating shredded chicken, this is our go-to approach. Simmering boneless chicken thighs in a tasty cooking broth for a short period of time helps them become soft and extremely moist. We go to great lengths to ensure that the chicken is as juicy and tasty as it possibly can be. As soon as the chicken is finished boiling, we reduce the cooking liquid by one-third before spooning the concentrated broth over it. This recipe yields around 5 cups of shredded chicken.

Watch Us Make the Recipe

3-pounds of boneless, skinless chicken thighs (or combination of thighs and breast) 1 medium onion, peeled and chopped into thin slices 4 garlic cloves (peeled and gently smashed), halved salt (one teaspoon) one bay leaf 1 1/2 tablespoons cumin seeds, ground a half teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper Water

Directions

  • Cook the chicken: In a large heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the chicken, onion, garlic, bay leaf, salt, cumin, and pepper and bring to a boil. Just enough water to cover the chicken will suffice. Turn the heat up to high and bring the water to a boil, then skim off any froth or scum that rises to the surface. Reduce the heat to a low simmer so that the water around the chicken simmers very quietly. Cook for about 30 minutes, or until the chicken is fork-tender. Place the chicken on a chopping board and cut it into pieces. When the meat has cooled enough to handle, shred it with two forks or your fingers until it is uniformly thin.
  • To finish, boil the liquid that remains in the pot after the chicken has been removed until it has been reduced by one-third, or until the flavor has been concentrated, about 10 minutes. Toss the shredded chicken in a large mixing bowl with about 1 cup of the concentrated cooking liquid and mix well. Use within 2 to 3 days of receiving the product.

Adam and Joanne’s Tips

  • Make-ahead: The chicken and broth will keep for up to 3 days in the refrigerator and can be frozen for up to 1 month. Skin-On Chicken: We’ve cooked this dish using both boneless, skinless chicken thighs and chicken thighs with the skin still on, and both have turned out delicious. Both are really effective. If you are using chicken that has been skinned, you may simply remove and discard the skin before shredding the chicken. Depending on how much fat you have in the boiling broth, you may need to skim some from the top before spooning it over the chicken. Cooking Liquid Leftovers: You will have some cooking liquid left over after this recipe. When served as a mild soup, it is rather delectable on its own. You may also use it as a base for other dishes, such as soup. For longer storage periods (more than a day), a tablespoon or two of water may be added to provide a little more moisture. To prepare this chicken in a slow cooker, just combine all of the ingredients in the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 4 to 6 hours, or until the chicken is cooked through and tender. Transfer the chicken to a saucepan with the liquid and set aside. Cook the broth until it has been reduced by a third, then ladle it over the chicken pieces.
