Anyone who enjoys a delicious steak sandwich will appreciate how simple steak-umms are to make. In my spare time, I like a nice steak-umm sandwich and have perfected what I think to be the world’s finest steak-umm sandwich. This specific recipe is a touch hot, but the spiciness is countered by the sweetness of the dish itself. This makes for a fantastic sandwich, don’t you think? ** At the moment, my Image Notes are not functioning properly, but I am working on it **
Step 1: Ingredients/Tools
All you need to do to make this is the following:
- 2 pieces of steak (the sheets of steak-umms are wrapped in twos between wax paper)
- Half of a small-medium sized onion
- 2 tablespoons of ketchup
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce Butter (for coating the pan and sautéing your onions)
- Tabasco sauce
- Worcestershire sauce
- Rolls
- Sugar (believe me when I say that this is what makes the recipe)
- Salt and pepper
- A small to medium-sized onion
- 2 pieces of steak (steak-umms are packed in twos between wax paper)
- 2 pieces of steak (steak-umms are packaged in twos between wax paper). Tabasco sauce
- Worcestershire sauce
- Rolls
- Sugar (believe me when I tell that this is what makes the recipe)
- Butter (for coating the pan and sauteeing your onions)
Step 2: Cut, Peel, and Dice Your Oninon
Cutting the onion in half and reserving the other half for another purpose is a very self-explanatory procedure. Remove the peel from the half onion and cut the pieces into semi-large chunks.
Step 3: Sautee’ Your Onions
Cutting the onion in half and reserving the other half for another use is a fairly self-explanatory procedure. Remove the peel from your half onion and cut the pieces into semi-large chunks to use in your recipe.
Step 4: Prepare Meat
Break up your steak-umm sheets into medium-sized pieces before cooking them. (Do you notice a pattern developing here?)
Step 5: Add the Meat
Break up your steak-umm sheets into medium-sized pieces before cooking them. (Do you notice a pattern developing here?
Step 6: De-greaser
Create another one by taking three sheets of paper towels and folding them in half twice, then placing them on a saucer plate and sandwiching the fatty meal between them while absorbing the grease with another paper towel folded in half twice.
Step 7: One Last Seasoning
Increase the heat to medium on your onion/meat and mix in one more pinch of sugar until it is completely dissolved. Turn off the burners on your stove.
Step 8: De-grease
Pour all of the fat from your onion/meat mixture onto a folded paper towel and set it aside. For a few seconds, squeeze the oily mixture between two pieces of paper towel. Repeat with the other two pieces of paper towel. When onions and meat adhere to a paper towel, they are still edible; simply scrape them back onto the dish and repeat the process.
Step 9: Roll It Up!
No, however you may put the completed steak-umm mixture onto your roll if you like. We’re getting close to the finish line.
Step 10: A Word on Bread
In this Instructable, I’ll demonstrate how to make a hot dog and meatball sandwich on a bun. During my most recent attempt to make steak-umms, I began without first checking to see if we had rolls, which we did not have. However, Croissants, this resulted in a beautiful finding. Sweet and spicy flavors of the steak-umms are wonderfully balanced by the sweet and spicy flavor of the croissant. You can tuck the steak-umm into a little pocket in the centre of the croissant if you hollow out a small hole in the middle of the croissant.
Step 11: Final Additives
Although I believe that cheese should not be used in this recipe, you can experiment with it to see what you prefer. Adding cheese is optional. I also like to finish with a big splash of Tabasco sauce!
Step 12: Enjoy!
Take a deep breath and enjoy the amazing supper you just prepared in less than 20 minutes, take that, Rachel Ray! Comments and criticism are encouraged. Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Prepare all of the vegetables and set them aside. Prepare the counter by laying out two pieces of aluminum foil. If necessary, slice the hoagie buns (mine were already cut); set them aside. Preheat the oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. In a medium nonstick pan, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium-high heat until melted. Frozen Steak-umms should be added along with a pinch of salt and pepper, and the meat should be browned on both sides. Transfer to a bowl and cover with plastic wrap to keep warm.
- Cook for a couple of minutes, or until the mushrooms are tender and lightly browned, before serving.
- Continue to cook the onions and bell peppers (along with a pinch of salt and pepper) in the same pan over medium/medium-high heat until crisp tender and lightly browned, adding more butter if necessary.
- 1 slice of cheese should be sliced or torn into pieces that will fit on the bottom (cut side) of a hoagie roll.
- Another piece of cheese should be cut or torn and placed on top of the vegetables.
Steps 1 through 3 should be repeated for the remaining hoagie. Placing the hoagies straight on the center oven rack and baking for 15 minutes should be plenty. Toss with a side of potato chips or French fries and serve immediately (while still wrapped in foil).
How to Cook Steak-Umms
Make a fast Philly Cheesesteak sandwich by frying the meat, putting it on bread, and melting the cheese. Photograph courtesy of Mark Stout/iStock/Getty Images Steak-umms are a brand of thinly sliced beef that is sold frozen in numerous grocery shops under the name Steak-umms. In order to make sandwiches like the Philly Cheesesteak, steak-umms are a good choice. Because steak-umms have a high fat level, it is recommended that you consume them in moderation. Steak-umms include only one ingredient: beef, which means they are devoid of additives and preservatives.
Step 1
Turn the heat up to medium-high on a frying pan or skillet.
Step 2
A frozen Steak-umm, or two depending on the size of the pan, should be added to a dry pan. Because of the high fat content of the meat, it is not required to add additional fat to the pan.
Step 3
Steak-umm should be cooked for one minute on one side, then flipped over with tongs and cooked for an additional 15 to 20 seconds on the opposite side.
Step 4
Remove the Steak-um from the skillet and place it on top of your toasted sandwich.
Tip
To give a new flavor to your sandwich, sauté onions and peppers before cooking the beef and then add them to your sandwich.
Easy Cheesesteak Sandwiches
Try making these delicious cheesesteak sandwiches at home the next time you and your family are wanting cheesesteak sandwiches. They are simple to prepare and taste great. Call it a desire, but I couldn’t stop myself from eating a cheesesteak sandwich last week. It was, like, a requirement. Despite the fact that I had been craving one for a few days, I must confess that generally scrumptious greasy cheesesteak sandwiches result in a severe stomach ache for me. It’s not enjoyable. What is is is what is.
- Your imagination can’t begin to express how delighted my spouse was to learn that cheesesteaks were on the menu that evening.
- It’s a treat, and I know I owe it to him every now and then, considering how much he doesn’t complain about all of the vegetable and beanmeals and lean ground turkey we generally have on a regular basis.
- I’m aware that there are folks out there who are really enthusiastic about the way their cheesesteak sandwiches are created.
- You’re aware of what they were, right?
- I highly recommend them.
- It was a pleasure to offer these delicious and simple cheesesteak sandwiches with these freshly cooked Italian herb fries– I highly urge you go in the kitchen and prepare them as soon as possible.
- This dish was inspired from the American Test Kitchen’s 6 Ingredient Solution cookbook, which is a fantastic resource to have in your library!
There are still a few days left to win my contest for America’s Test Kitchen’s newest cookbook, 6 Ingredient Solution, if you’re looking for more simple back-to-school dish ideas — or if you’re a fan of America’s Test Kitchen.
Ingredients:
- The ingredients are as follows: 2 pounds thinly sliced top round steak (the original recipe called for skirt steak, which my shop did not have)
- 1 teaspoon oil
- An 8-ounce bag of sliced mushrooms, coarsely chopped
- Thinly slice 1 small onion, then coarsely chop 1 small shallot
- A large sprinkle of steak seasoning or coarse salt and pepper
- 1 red bell pepper, thinly cut, then finely chopped 1 – 4 sliced American or Provolone cheese slices
- 4-6 Italian sub rolls
Directions:
- Place the steak in the freezer for approximately one hour to make cutting easier. When the meat is solid and hard, remove it from the freezer and stack it on a cutting board, giving it a rough chop
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Prepare your sandwich bread by cutting it in half lengthwise
- In a large nonstick skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat until shimmering. Cook until the mushrooms, peppers, and onions are tender and browned, around 5-8 minutes, depending on the size of your pan. When finished, remove to a dish and set aside. Add your coarsely chopped beef to the pan and cook over medium-high heat until it begins to brown, about 4-5 minutes total. Season with steak seasoning, salt, and pepper to taste, if desired. Return the veggies to the pan and toss to mix. If your pan does not have enough room to contain all of the meat and veggies at once, you may have to work in two batches. Once all of the meat and vegetables have been cooked, drain them well in a colander. Once drained, return the meat and vegetable mixture to the pan and cover to keep warm. When ready to assemble the sandwiches, spoon liberal amounts of the meat and vegetable mixture into each bun. Place the rolls on a large baking sheet so that they are side by side. Place in the oven for about 2 minutes, or until the American cheese is totally melted and the cheese has melted entirely. Serve with handmade baked fries and take pleasure in it

- What a flurry of activity this last week has been! The city of San Francisco was magnificent. I can’t wait to show you all the pictures of what we did and the food we ate while we were there. San Francisco is without a doubt my favorite city in the United States. Just when I thought I’d accomplished everything, I find out there’s much more to do! However, it’s fantastic to be back in the saddle. I was completely spent! Let’s speak about the VMAs for a moment. What did you think of Miley’s performance? A resounding w-t-f. Take the shock value out of it and simply be Hannah Montana again. Okay, maybe not that much but tone down the trashy attitude. The conversation between Miley and Liam would be fascinating to hear if I could have been a fly on the wall during that conversation. Miley’s whole performance from the Smith family was summed up well in the finest shot of the night, which was taken by the Smiths themselves. What about the *NSYNC “reunion”? It was a little underwhelming and anticlimactic. But what about JT’s OUTSTANDING performance? How can he maintain his strength for such a long period of time?! He’s very remarkable. Sorry for the teenie bop moment, but I’m a child of the late 1990s and I can’t help myself. What’s more, did you know that JT and I share the same birthday? Yes, it is the 31st of January. Isn’t it true that I’m naturally epic? So I’m going to pose the age-old question: were/are you a fan of the Backstreet Boys or *NSYNC?:) Now, let’s talk about the cuisine! I developed an intense hankering for cheesesteaks a few of months ago. This deli near my workplace serves a fantastic rueben-style cheesesteak, which I highly recommend you try. It’s one of the most irresistible sandwiches I’ve ever had, and it’s unfortunate that it’s so near to where I work for lunch. I’ve already returned a number of times, and I’d devour the entire sandwich as soon as I returned to my desk from lunch. What an embarrassment, haha. In contrast, when the urge for a cheesesteak struck, it wasn’t a work day, and I wasn’t within walking distance of a restaurant where I could satisfy it. I had to construct one from scratch! In the midst of the hunger, I recall that Julie had previously provided a useful tip for preparing cheesesteaks (Lindsayalso made her cheesesteaks this way, too). Wrapping them firmly in aluminum foil and baking them for 10-15 minutes should do the trick. It helps to soften the bread and allows everything to blend together. I’d never really considered doing it this way before, but I figured I’d give it a go because I was in the mood for an ooey gooey cheesesteak on some insanely soft bread at the time. This tiny technique has left a lasting impression on me! Everything becomes really mushy and melty as a result of this. In addition, the flavors permeate the bread. It’s fantastic! It has now become my standard technique of preparing subs, and I use it for all of my subs now! My pepperoni meatball subs turned out just as delicious when I used the same approach a few weeks ago – soft bread, gooey and melted cheese, toasty and warm on the inside – and they were created with the same method. Julie, thank you so much for the excellent advice! This method of preparing cheesesteak sandwiches is one that will be used again and again. - 14 pound of thinly sliced ribeye steak, which I get in bulk from an Asian grocery in the meats area of the supermarket. They’ve already finely sliced them for you. Simply inquire as to where the bulgogi meat is located. 1medium green pepper, cut into strips
- 1medium onion, also split into strips
- 6ounces sliced portobello mushrooms
- 1 cup shredded provolone cheese Season with salt and pepper to taste
- (but not all the way through) 2 sub rolls, split in half (but not all the way through)
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (180 degrees Celsius). Stack the two cut sub buns on two sheets of aluminum foil to make a sandwich bag. Remove from consideration
- In a large pan, sauté the onions and green peppers for approximately 3-4 minutes, then add the mushrooms and cook for about 3 minutes, or until the mushrooms are tender. Place all of the ingredients in a dish and set aside
- Cook the steak in the same skillet, breaking it up into smaller pieces as it cooks, until it is completely cooked through, about 5 minutes. Re-add the onions and peppers to the skillet and mix everything together (season with salt and pepper to taste), then serve. To construct the cheesesteaks, open one sub roll and stuff it with half of the meat filling, then top it with half of the provolone cheese. Repeat with the other sub rolls. Repeat the process for the second sub roll. Bake for 15 minutes at 350°F after wrapping each sub tightly in aluminum foil. The cheesesteak sandwich is ready to be enjoyed after 15 minutes of baking. Carefully remove it from the oven and allow it to cool before unwrapping and eating it.

In the event that you adore a terrific Philly Cheesesteak and have long hoped you could make this delectable classic at home, you have arrived at the ideal area.

Despite the fact that we are no longer in California, the 49ers are still the focus of attention in this household. This recipe makes enough Philly Cheesesteak filling to fill 8 hoagie buns, and it can all be made in one pan on the stovetop. These were inhaled by my family.
The Best Cut of Beef for Cheesesteaks
It’s critical to use a cut of beef that doesn’t take a long cooking time to get soft before you can serve it. Even though ribeye is a popular cut of steak, the price is above what I am ready to spend, especially considering that this dish calls for between 212 and 3 pounds of meat. This Philly Cheesesteak recipe calls for sirloin, especially small sirloin, which is my preferred cut of beef. Even while top sirloin is a superb choice, petite sirloin is less costly while still being delicate enough to make a delicious Cheesesteak with less effort.
At my local Safeway, I’ve been able to get value packs of petite sirloin for less than $4 a pound.
Make sure to watch the video at the conclusion of this post to get a closer look at tiny sirloin and to see this dish in action (just above the recipe card).
Once the meat has been sliced, chop it into extremely little pieces (about 14 inches).
Kitchen Tip
Make slicing your sirloin easier by placing it in the freezer for 20 to 30 minutes before cutting.
How to Make Philly Cheesesteaks with Peppers and Onions
The procedure is straightforward! To get started, you’ll need a big, deep sauté pan. The use of a Dutch oven can suffice if you don’t have any large sautépans on hand. I like to add bell peppers and onions to these delicious cheesesteaks to give them a pop of color and a ton of flavor while yet keeping them simple. Over MEDIUM-LOW heat, heat vegetable oil and sauté thinly sliced onion and bell pepper until softened. The peppers and onions should not be browned, so if they begin to brown, turn down the heat underneath the pan a little.
- Add a little more oil to the pan and then half of the chopped sirloin to the hot pan to finish cooking.
- Heat through, stirring constantly, until the meat is browned.
- Proceed with the remaining steak and spices until all of the beef has been used.
- Return the pan to the heat and add the cooked vegetables and meat back to the pan to heat through.
- Once the melted cheese has been distributed throughout the meat and vegetable mixture, it’s time to stuff those hoagie buns!
How to Prepare the Hoagie Rolls
The preparation of a high-quality Cheesesteak begins with this stage. When constructing any substantial sandwiches with heated components, it is usually a good idea to toast the rolls before assembling the sandwich itself. Separate the rolls, but do not split them apart. Lightly butter the insides of the buns and arrange them on a baking sheet, opened up. Place the baking sheet in an oven that has been preheated to 400 degrees F. While the cheese is melting into the meat and vegetable combination, you’ll have just the appropriate amount of time to complete this chore before dinner is ready.
These are hefty sandwiches that will fill even the most ravenous of visitors, and they are just appropriate for Super Bowl Sunday!
Having said that, I believe they are pretty damned appropriate for any occasion. Another fantastic alternative is mySlow Cooker Drip Beef Sandwiches, which you should definitely try out as well.

- 1 cup vegetable oil, divided (or as needed)
- 4 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 halved and thinly sliced sweet yellow onion (about 2 inch pieces)
- 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, finely sliced
- 1 yellow bell pepper, thinly sliced 12 to 3 pounds tiny sirloin, thinly sliced sirloin
- 1 teaspoon Lawry’s Seasoned Salt, or other all-purpose seasoning, split
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic pepper, divided hoagie rolls
- 6 tablespoons softened butter
- 7 ounces sliced Provolone cheese
- 8 hoagie rolls (7 1-ounce slices) Tillamook Farmstyle Thick Cut was the cheese I used.
- Place the meat in the freezer for around 20 to 30 minutes before beginning. This will make it much easier to finely slice the meat. Cook the vegetables in 2 tablespoons vegetable oil in a large, deep (14-inch) sauté pan over MEDIUM-LOW heat, stirring occasionally. Combine the onion and bell peppers in a large mixing bowl. Cook, stirring periodically, until the vegetables are very soft. If they are starting to brown, reduce the heat beneath the skillet by a few degrees. While the vegetables are simmering, prepare the steak, returning every few minutes to stir
- Take the steak out of the freezer and lay it on a chopping board to thaw. Trim the margins of extra fat with a sharp knife, and then slice it as thinly as possible across the grain with the knife. Chop the sliced steak into extremely little pieces once it has been sliced. Continue to chop until you are unable to chop any more! You’re looking for parts that are around 14 inches long. Watch those vegetables closely while you’re preparing the meat
- When they’re soft, put them to a serving dish and return the skillet to a medium-high heat
- Add extra oil and cook over MEDIUM-HIGH heat until the oil is hot. Cook, stirring regularly, for 4 to 5 minutes, or until no pink is visible on the surface of half of the chopped steak. During the cooking process, season with 12 teaspoons each of seasoned salt and garlic pepper. Transfer the first batch of steak to a serving plate with the onions and peppers, reserving the juices in the pan. Repeat the process with the remaining meat and spices, using extra oil if necessary. Set oven to 400 degrees F. Split open the hoagie buns, but do not split them, before placing in the oven. Spread the softened butter over the tops of the cookies and set them on a baking sheet. Transfer the baking sheet to the oven and bake for 3 to 5 minutes, or until the top is gently browned and toasted, depending on your preference. Remove the pan from the heat and set it back on the burner. Drain out all of the liquids. Return all of the meat, as well as the onions and peppers, to the pan. Cover the pan with 7 provolone slices, arranged in a circle around the mixture, and set aside. Cook on MEDIUM for 4 to 5 minutes, or until the cheese has melted, then mix and transfer to the toasted sandwich buns using tongs.

Guilty Pleasures: Philly Cheesesteaks – C H E W I N G T H E F A T
In all its magnificence, the Original Philly Cheesesteak may be found here.
I’m not going to lie to you: This is not health food but oh my, is it good.
We all have them: delicacies that are strangely enticing, even though the components in them are often dubious, such as the “Cheese” in Cheesesteaks or the grade of the cattle used in the steak section of this recipe’s recipe. I’ll admit that I’ve been ‘keeping’ the fact that I adore Philly Cheesesteaks a secret. I exclusively purchased them from the Halal Food cart that was semi-permanently positioned in front of the Apple Store, about a half-block from our home in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood.
However, the food cart has been missing for months, and I’m beginning to wonder if street food will ever make a comeback in Manhattan.
The truth about Cheesesteaks: And it’s not all pretty.
Cheese Whiz no longer has any cheese as an ingredient. This recipe claims to be a true representation of the original. But first, here are some interesting facts regarding Cheesesteak sandwiches. They aren’t even steak sandwiches in the traditional sense. Their filling is produced from beef that has been frozen and then cut very thin. Steak sandwiches, with or without cheese, are what Philadelphians think of when they think of food cooked on a grill top. The sandwich is referred to be a steak if it is not made with cheese.
- Now, let’s talk about that cheese.
- It’s Cheese Whiz, to be precise.
- A single serving of two level tablespoons lard has one-third of the daily recommended maximum in saturated fat and one-third of the daily recommended maximum in salt, according to the USDA.
- What’s most surprising is what isn’t there at all.
Cheese Whiz, on the other hand, has no cheese at all. Fortunately, you can replace Provolone for the cheese whipz, because Provolone is a genuine cheese in its own right. In Philadelphia, though, whether you order with or without cheese, you’re talking about Cheese Whiz.
Nevertheless, they’re delicious and we have two South Philly Brothers to thank.
Brothers Harry and Pat Olivieri owned a hot dog and sandwich stand in the Italian immigrant district of Philadelphia’s Italian Market. Pat, fed up with hot dogs, convinced Harry to get some meat as a change of pace. Harry chopped it up and heaped it onto a bun with some onions on the side. It was a cab driver who came in for lunch, smelled the beef and onions on the sandwich, and placed an order for it. Pat didn’t even get a chance to taste it before charging the cab driver 5 cents. According to legend, the cab driver instructed the Olivieris to “forget about those hot dogs,” and instead “sell these instead.” In fact, it wasn’t until 20 years later that the cheese was put to the sandwich, thanks to an employee who had grown weary of the original sandwich.
It wasn’t until the 1960s that it made its appearance on the Cheesesteak.
Since then, it has been frying cheesesteaks 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
What’s the Beef? The answer may surprise you.
As we all know, shopping nowadays isn’t what it used to be a few decades ago. Strange things are hard to come by these days. It occurred to me that my mother, who is possibly the greatest devotee of convenience foods in history, fed my kid nearly completely on Steak-Umms when I made the decision to make Philly Cheesesteaks. So I went to the freezer case and there they were, waiting for me. No less than Angus Beef! And the Steak-Umms were up to the challenge as well. They were delicious served straight from the freezer as a beef topping for the mushrooms and onions on top of the Hero buns.
For the sake of not feeling guilty, I served it with a cherry tomato and lettuce salad on the side to round things out.
The recipe is as follows:
The Original Philly Cheesesteak
: 2: 5 minutes: 25 minutes: 30 minutes: Simple This is a guilty passion of mine. It’s a famous sandwich loaded with caramelized onions, mushrooms, and thinly sliced beef, and it’s topped with mozzarella cheese.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 2 medium onions, diced as thinly as possible and rings separated*
- 2 medium garlic cloves, minced a half cup of sliced mushrooms
- Steak of 12 ounces
- Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
- Cheese slices (such as Cheese Whiz or provolone)
- 1 (8-inch-long) Italian bread, hoagie roll, or French baguette
- Dill pickle spears
- 1 (8-inch-long) Italian loaf, hoagie roll, or French baguette
Directions
- Sauté chopped mushrooms, green pepper, onion, salt and pepper (if used) in olive oil in a big pan over medium heat until the mushrooms are soft. Cook for 8-10 minutes over medium heat, or until the vegetables are soft and the onions have begun to caramelize. In order to get the greatest results when slicing your own bread, make sure that the loaf is not cut all the way through, but rather hinged at one end. Using forks or a spatula, shred the frozen steak-umms as they thaw and cook, and form them into a bun-shaped pile as they finish cooking. Remove any fat that has accumulated in the pan by draining it
- Set aside part of the cooked vegetable combination and place it over a stack of cooking beef. As soon as the meat is done to your satisfaction, lay the opened hoagie roll over the meat and use a long spatula to raise and turn the sandwich over. Fill the bread with any remaining filling that has fallen out. Serve with mustard or mayonnaise and sliced banana peppers on top of the sandwich
- Serve immediately. Provolone cheese (or melted cheddar spread, if desired) should be placed on top of the filling at this stage. Microwave the sandwich for 30-45 seconds, or until the bun has softened and the cheese has melted, if desired
- Remove from microwave and serve. Serve immediately after slicing in half. Repeat the process with the remaining sandwiches.
