No matter how creative, spontaneous, or original I try to be with my weekday lunches, I usually find myself yearning something as basic as a tuna salad sandwich at some point during the day. It’s the perfect comfort dish for lunch. Is it been a while since you had a tuna salad sandwich or wrap? Here’s my go-to, most simple recipe for you to try.

To be honest, there’s not much to putting together a tuna salad.

When I make it, I like to include some chopped celery and onions to give it a little crispness to counterbalance the creaminess of the dish.

I also enjoy tuna that has been packed in water, mainly because I believe it has a purer tuna flavor.

How Do I Keep Tuna Salad from Being Dry?

Adding at least one tablespoon of mayonnaise for one (5-ounce) can of tuna will help to keep your tuna salad from becoming dry. Try out the salad when you’ve finished combining all of the ingredients. If you want it creamier, add another tablespoon or two of mayonnaise to the mixture. A squeeze of lemon juice also helps to moisten the dish. Replace the mayonnaise with yogurt if you want a lighter salad. Alternatively, olive oil can be used to make a more casual salad.

How Long Does Tuna Salad Last in the Fridge?

Tuna salad may be kept in the refrigerator for up to a week if it is put in an airtight container. And, of course, tuna salad sandwiches are only one of the numerous foods that can be created with the salad. Make a quick pasta salad by tossing in some macaroni, or pack it inside avocado halves or scooped-out tomatoes for a gluten-free lunch on the go. My favorite afternoon snack is a few spoonfuls of tuna salad with crackers, which is also one of my favorite meals.

Tuna salad is a go-to midday meal for many people. This basic recipe, which includes tuna, mayonnaise, pickle relish, celery, shallot, and lemon juice, is the ideal combination of creamy and crunchy textures.

Ingredients

  • 2 (5-ounce) cans of tuna fish in water-packed brine 2 to 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 stalk celery, sliced small
  • 2 to 4 teaspoons mustard Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 small shallot or 1/4 red onion, chopped small
  • 1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice (from 1/2 lemon)
  • 1 teaspoon pickle relish (optional)
  • 1 small shallot or 1/4 red onion, diced small

Instructions

  1. Use a can opener to cut open the cans of tuna fish, but leave the lid in place. As you hold the cans over a sink or a bowl, push the lid into the tuna fish and tilt the can to allow all of the liquid to drain out. Remove the tuna fish from the cans and place it in a medium-sized mixing bowl. Toss the tuna fish with 2 tablespoons mayonnaise, the celery, shallot, lemon juice, pickle relish (if using), a pinch of salt, and a few cracks of freshly ground black pepper until well combined. Toss everything together with a fork, breaking up any large bits of tuna fish as you go. If you like a smoother, creamier tuna salad, increase the amount of mayonnaise you use. Taste and add extra of any of the ingredients to taste. Toss right away or keep in an airtight jar in the refrigerator for up to a week

Recipe Notes

  • To make a lighter salad, substitute yogurt for the mayonnaise. For a looser salad, substitute extra-virgin olive oil for the mayonnaise. In lieu of the tuna, you may substitute canned salmon, smoked trout, or leftover chicken. To the basic recipe, you may add chopped apples, raisins, or other dried fruit. You may also use chopped fennel, shredded cabbage, sliced cucumbers, or any other crunchy vegetable as a garnish. Combine the curry powder with the dukkah or harissa and the chopped fresh herbs, or any other spice combination you have in your pantry. Tuna and mayonnaise is about as straightforward as it gets, and it makes for a perfectly decent lunch
