If you prefer to experiment with different sorts of tomatoes, a green when ripe variety is one of the best to cultivate. And we haven’t been able to find a better GWR for our backyard.

Aunt Ruby’s German Greentomato has a stronger taste than you may expect for a tomato with such a mild flavor. It’s juicy, sweet, and tangy all at the same time. We like it sliced thinly and served with a pinch of salt, fresh mozzarella, and basil.

Too many tomatoes!

When growing tomatoes, it is possible that they will all mature at the same time. If you are unable to consume all of your tomatoes before they go bad, there are a few simple methods for preserving them. One of our favorite ways to consume fresh tomatoes is in a Caprese salad, which is a classic Italian dish. We prefer to use a variety of different sorts and colors of tomatoes to create a colorful Caprese salad. Homemade tomatoes should be sliced and layered with slices of fresh mozzarella cheese and homegrown basil, if possible.

Summertime side dish that is out of this world!

Fried green tomatoes?

When we talk about frying green tomatoes, we are referring to green tomatoes that are not yet ripe. You don’t want to use a ripe green tomato for frying since it will become brown. If you try to bread and fry a ripe tomato, it will become mushy and tasteless. Aunt Ruby’s is a great fried tomato recipe, but to create fried green tomatoes, you must use a firm, unripe tomato that has not been cooked.

3.Cherokee Purple

If you’ve never had a black or purple tomato before, this is a terrific spot to start your experiment. Cherokee Purple is a traditional heritage tomato that is a fantastic choice for beginners because it is a simple type to raise. It grows quite well in the southern hemisphere and produces a lot of fruit. The huge tomatoes have a strong taste and are delectable. It is an excellent kind to begin with if you are just starting out and want to branch out from the traditional red store version since the flavor will completely knock you out.

4. Sun Gold

Your entire family will enjoy the sweetness of this delicious cherry. Sun Gold is a tomato that is a hybrid F1 variety. A hybrid tomato is not a product of genetic engineering. It’s nothing more than a crossbred tomato. The F1 designation denotes that it is a first generation tomato resulting from a cross between two ‘parent’ tomato varieties. To purchase Sun Gold tomato seeds from Johnnyseeds.com, please visit this link. This cherry is absolutely worth growing every year in every garden since it is so delicious and sweet.

You will enjoy strolling through your garden and savoring the sweetness of these beautiful babies fresh off the vine!

5.Maglia Rosa

Maglia Rosa is a delicious salad and snacking tomato that is constantly in demand, no matter where we cultivate tomatoes. GrowArtisan.com sells Maglia Rosa seeds, which you may purchase by clicking here. Maglia Rosa is a wispy, long-leaved shrub that produces these delicious, gorgeous pointed tomatoes in the summertime. It has a compact growth habit that allows it to thrive in containers and is a prolific producer. Tomatoes that are on the greenish side of ripe should be picked and eaten as soon as possible.

We appreciate that the flavor is still present even after being cooked. If you are anything like us, after your first season of experimenting with several tomato types, you will find it extremely tough to cut down your grow list to simply five kinds.

I’d love to hear your favorite tomatoes to grow.

My Best Tomato Sandwich Recipe on Food52

I believe that the tomato sandwich is both under- and overappreciated, depending on which side you belong to. Some people just do not understand the wonder of a perfectly made tomato sandwich, while others, such as myself, think about it far more frequently than is technically healthy. If thinking about tomato sandwiches is among the worst of my vices, I believe I’m doing quite well.) When tomato season is in full swing, I make a point of eating a tomato sandwich for lunch at least three days a week during that time.

  • 2 slices sourdough bread (my favorite is Eli’s Health Loaf)
  • 1 ripe medium beefsteak tomato (New Jersey or similar), preferably from a local farm

  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • And coarsely ground black pepper

Directions
  1. Toast the bread till it is to your satisfaction (I like mine nice and crispy, but I know some prefer a lighter toast). Allow it to cool for a few minutes while you core and chop the tomato into 1/8-inch-thick pieces. Apply a teaspoon and a half of mayonnaise to one side of each piece of bread (you may use more or less if you want) and arrange as many tomato slices as you can on top of each piece of toast. Repeat with the remaining pieces of toast. Season with a good amount of salt and pepper. Top with the other slice of bread, which has been split in half (either vertically or diagonally — the option is yours, so have fun with it). Remove from the oven and serve immediately with a side of napkins to collect the tomato/mayo juices that will definitely trickle down your chin

Simple Tomato Sandwich

They’re piled high on a great crusty bread and topped with juicy slices of fresh tomatoes. All right, everyone. So I realize that no one really needs a very long blog post lesson on how to make a tomato sandwich, and I’m not going to write one. I understand that it is straightforward. Tomato sandwiches, on the other hand, are the pinnacle of Summer for me.

When I was a youngster, I used to enjoy them while sitting on my grandmother’s front porch or eating them for supper with a pile of potato chips on a paper plate.

To serve as a gentle reminder that even in the midst of this chaotic moment, something as simple as a tomato sandwich may offer us joy.

Who knows, this unusual season could turn out to be one of those periods in the future when we look back on our lives and are filled with joy because of a particular recollection.

A Southern Thing + Why Simple is Best

Easy to make, this Simple Tomato Sandwich is the pinnacle of summertime eating! If you try one of these sandwiches, you won’t be able to stop at just one! They’re packed with flavor, served on great crusty bread and topped with juicy slices of fresh tomatoes. Okay, everyone. After all, I’m well aware that no one is likely to be interested in a lengthy blog post instruction on how to assemble a tomato sandwich. Obviously, the solution is straightforward. The tomato sandwich is the pinnacle of Summer in my opinion, although.

Having them reminds me of my childhood, when I would eat them on my grandmother’s front porch or with a pile of potato chips on a paper plate for supper with my family.

To serve as a gentle reminder that even in the midst of this chaotic period, something as simple as a tomato sandwich may offer us happiness.

And who knows, this unusual season could turn out to be one of those moments in our lives when we look back and remember something happy from our past. A tomato sandwich with someone you care about might bring back memories of those times.

Ingredients You Need:

  • Fresh ripe tomatoes, bread, mayonnaise, salt, and pepper are all included.

What tomato should I use?

Of course, what you eat will depend on the season you’re in as well as your personal tastes. The Beefsteak Tomato is a fantastic example of a traditional tomato to pair with it. It’s thick and meaty, just as the name implies, and it ensures that your sandwich is bursting with delicious flavor. There are several varieties of Beefsteak Tomatoes to choose from. I used a brand called “Better Boy” for this particular sandwich. A Heirloom Tomato is one of the most exotic forms of Beefsteak, and it’s one of the most popular in the world.

  1. This year, my closest friend Kate and her husband Cam also raised some Chocolate Stripe tomatoes, which turned out to be really delicious.
  2. I believe that heritage tomatoes have a richer flavor than “regular” tomatoes since they are older.
  3. What matters most is that the tomato is ripe, which is something that should be considered regardless of the variety of tomato you use.
  4. You want it to be juicy on the inside, yet firm on the outside (so that it doesn’t become mealy on the inside).

What bread should I use?

Bread of any kind, no matter how stale, is OK to me! This sandwich is made with a variety of breads, which I choose depending on my mood. I grew up eating plain old white bread, which I consider to be a classic/basic. You know, the sort where, when you lightly press it, a little mayonnaise comes out — you know what I’m talking about? A toasted crusty French baguette, on the other hand, is something I really appreciate. You may also use whole grain or sprouted flour, depending on what you have on hand.

If you want to make it seem a little more elevated, I recommend toasting it.

It’s hard for me to decide between toasted and untoasted, but I think untoasted would win out since I believe untoasted would be more resistant to the additional juices from the tomatoes.

What’s the best mayonnaise?

There are no many alternatives available to me for this — there is just one one. Duke’s Mayonnaise is the best in the world. If you’re looking for the creamiest, most delectable mayonnaise, go no further. And you must give it a go! (And no, this is not a paid post; I’ve simply been consuming this mayonnaise since I was old enough to consume it! Ha!)

Ways to Make it *Extra* Fancy

Because I just have one option, I don’t have many alternatives.

Duke’s Mayonnaise is the best in the business, no doubt about it. It’s the creamiest, most delectable mayonnaise you’ll ever eat, guaranteed. You gotta give it a shot! No, this is not a paid post; I’ve simply been eating this mayonnaise since I was old enough to consume it. Ha!)
