Roast Beef & Cheese Sandwiches

Roast beef that is tender, juicy, and full of flavor has a certain allure to it. Whether braised or cooked in the slow cooker, this dish is always a hit at my family. I purchased a gorgeous roast at Lowes Foods last week with the full intention of cooking it in my slow cooker. Because time had gotten away from me, I resorted to my cast irondutch oven. Brining meats is one of my favorite ways to cook since it turns your oven into a slow cooker with only a few vegetables, stock, a few herbs, and a little time.

After completing one successful supper, I had enough roast beef left enough to prepare a second one.

The fact that our family enjoys cheese steak sandwiches has prompted me to consider creating a southern roast beef version.

I realize this isn’t Tony Luke’s from Philadelphia, but this is a fantastic sandwich!

  • 3/4 cup beef stock (or vegetarian stock)
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced (salt and pepper to taste)
  • 3-4 cups braised or slow cooked roast beef 1 pound toasted hoagie buns
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cups grated provolone cheese
  • In a medium-sized sauce pan, combine the meat and stock. Bring the pot to a low boil
  • Pour in the rest of the liquid and simmer for another 10 minutes, or until the majority of the liquid has been reduced. In a sauce pan, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat and add the onion. Season with salt and pepper if desired. Cook the onion until it is just beginning to brown. Oven should be set at 375 degrees. To assemble, gently open the hoagie buns and smear butter on the insides of each. Place on a baking pan and toast until golden brown, then remove from the oven
  • And Increase the temperature of the oven to 425 degrees. Prepare each roll by placing a big serving of roast meat on it using tongs or a slotted spoon. Sprinkle with cheese and arrange on a baking sheet
  • Place in the oven for 5-8 minutes, or until the cheese is melted
  • Remove from oven. Serve immediately after topping with onions

Add mushrooms, sautéed peppers, shredded lettuce, sliced pickled peppers, or chow chow to your sandwich for an extra special touch.

Deli Roast Beef Sandwiches

This roast beef sandwich in the manner of a deli will be a hit with everyone. The flavor combinations are the right balance of salty and sweet, with a slight bite in the middle. It was a neighborhood sandwich shop that gave me the idea for this sandwich because they served bacon jam with their beef sandwiches. I felt that adding some horseradish cream (which, in my view, is a must with roast beef) and some blue cheese would help to balance out the tastes a bit more, even though I appreciated the sweet.

Roast Beef Sandwich Toppings

In terms of the toppings for this sandwich, I got a little creative, but nothing too out of the ordinary. When it comes to their sandwiches, some people like to keep the toppings basic. Here are some other suggestions for toppings for a roast beef sandwich that you might like:

  • Tomatoes, sliced red onion, banana peppers, pickles, and cucumber slices are among the ingredients.
  • Sprouts
  • Roasted red pepper
  • Radish slices
  • Cheese (Cheddar, Swiss, Provolone, Havarti, Blue Cheese, Herbed Cream Cheese)

Roast Beef Sandwich Sauce

The sauce for this recipe was made with a horseradish mayonnaise. The horseradish has a nice bite to it, which I enjoy. I prefer to create my own since it allows me to regulate the amount of heat. If you want it hot, like I do, feel free to double the horseradish in this recipe or simply omit the mayonnaise completely if you don’t want to use mayonnaise in the first place. The following are some more suggestions for sauces or condiments to use with your roast beef sandwich:

  • Horseradish, either creamed or plain
  • Bacon jam
  • Deli mustard
  • Russian dressing (or Thousand Island dressing)
  • Blue cheese dressing
  • Spicy Aoli mayo
  • Russian dressing (or Thousand Island dressing). Arby’s Sauce (which is INCREDIBLY delicious on piping hot roast beef sandwiches)

Bacon Jam

Bacon jam, to be precise. If you haven’t already, you should. It is now or never. This spread is fantastic on crackers, burgers, and sandwiches like this one. It’s a delightful combination of sweet and savory flavors that’s brimming with bacon taste. I prefer to include a large quantity of chopped onion in my bacon jam to aid in the absorption of the bacon taste, but the onion may be decreased or cut out entirely if necessary. It simply takes a few minutes to prepare and will elevate the flavor of your sandwich to an entirely new level.

What Do You Like Your Roast Beef Sandwich Hot or Cold?

You’re in luck since this sandwich can go either way!

If you want it hot, cook the beef on a griddle until it is hot and then melt the cheese on top of it. Cook it in the same manner as you would a grilled cheese sandwich on the bread. Simply open it up and combine it with the remaining ingredients to create an excellent hot roast beef sandwich!

Roast Beef Sandwich Recipe with Horseradish Cream

If you want something wonderful, this Roast Beef Sandwich Recipe with Horseradish Cream is it. From the thinly sliced roast beef to the roasted potatoes to the horseradish cream, everything about this sandwich is rich with flavor. I’m so guilty of constantly stating that the simpler the meal, and for the most part, I completely agree with that statement. However, then there’s this. [Read more.] about To be honest, when it comes to the art of the sandwich, I believe that the more ingredients, the better (at least in my opinion), and this sandwich does not disappoint.

When you’re in college or the day after Thanksgiving, turkey sandwiches on Wonder Bread with mayonnaise are OK, but when you’re ready to play grown-up, you’ll want a big old fat sandwich like this one, which is stuffed with delights and topped with a delicious horseradish cream sauce.

What Type of Bread to Use

The first thing to determine for this recipe is what kind of bread to use. This alone has the potential to go in a number of different directions, and there are really no negative options. My recommendation for a loaf of bread would be as follows:

  • Rustic Artisan Ciabatta
  • French
  • Sourdough
  • Kaisar
  • Croissant
  • Rustic Artisan Ciabatta

Because you’re peeking in on this, I’ll tell you that I went with a Kaiser roll, and it turned out perfectly.

What Kind of Meat to Use

The roast beef is the next item on the list. The only way to prepare a prime rib roast is to roast it yourself and finely slice it, but most of you aren’t going to do that, and I wasn’t either.

Because the vast majority of you will not be doing so, simply ask your butcher or the guys up at the deli to slice up some roast beef that is a bit on the thicker side for this. The following brands are available for consideration:

  • Greenridge Farm
  • Boar’s Head
  • Deitz and Watson
  • Applegate
  • Greenridge Farm

Toppings

Now that the two primary components, bread and meat, have been determined, we must choose what will be used as toppings. Close your eyes and concentrate solely on the meat. Consider all of the fantastic things that beef pairs well with and what would make this an awesome meal! Potatoes, horseradish, balsamic vinegar, onions, and cream are just a few of the ingredients that come to mind. The next step is finding out how to include all of the ingredients that are often served as a sauce on top or as a vegetable on the side.

  • I used a mandolin slicer to thinly slice a bigrusset potato and a sweet potato, then doused them in olive oil, salt, and pepper before baking them on a sheet tray lined with parchment paper at 400° for 20 minutes, or until they are gently browned and done. You already know that potatoes go well with beef, and they will taste much better on this sandwich
  • Using the same mandolin, I sliced two shallots very thinly and placed them on a sheet tray lined with parchment paper. The next thing I did was slice two shallots very thinly on the same mandolin and set them on a sheet tray lined with parchment paper. I blended up some balsamic vinegar, sugar, and a small amount of olive oil in a dish and coated the shallots with the mixture before baking them for 25 minutes at 400° for caramelization. Beef with caramelized onions and a savory sauce! There’s no denying that you need to see what’s going on with this roast beef sandwich, or else you’ll be absolutely blindsided
  • This also gave me the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone when it came to the toppings. Remember how I mentioned that beef pairs nicely with balsamic and onions? Well, I simply matched them together

All of these toppings are completely optional and should only be utilized at the discretion of the user.

What Are Good Condiments to Use

While there are a few more items on this list, I wanted to focus on the elements that demand more effort, such as this horseradish cream, to make them taste better. This is by far the greatest condiment you could possibly use on it, since it is nothing short of delectably tasty. The sauce that goes on the roast beef sandwich will be the last thing we will discuss. It’s got a lot going on, but wow, is it worth your time:

  • Mayonnaise, sour cream, cream cheese, freshly grated horseradish (yes, you may use prepared horseradish in a jar), chiffonade fresh basil, chopped chives, Parmesan cheese, sea salt and pepper, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and dill pickle relish

Simply combine all of the delicious ingredients in a medium-sized mixing bowl and you’re done. Smother it in a thick layer all over it.

What Cheese Goes Best

It is possible to use sliced cheese instead of parmesan in the horseradish cream sauce, and while I did not use sliced cheese in this recipe, I did use parmesan in the horseradish cream sauce. There are a variety of different cheeses that go well with roast beef, including:

How to Make It

In order to make the finest roast beef sandwich ever, you need to utilize ingredients that are subtle in flavor and that enhance the flavor of the roast beef, which is exactly what we did with all of the toppings on this sandwich.

  • 1, spread a layer of horseradish cream on the bottom of a toasted Kaiser bun
  • 2: toast a second kaiser bun and spread a layer of horseradish cream on that as well. After that, scatter some arugula leaves on top of the horseradish cream and mix well. 3: Fold over several pieces of the cut meat and arrange them on top of the arugula to serve. Four, evenly arrange roasted potatoes, sweet potatoes, balsamic onions, thinly sliced radishes, kale micro greens (optional), and then finely slice the top bun
  • Five, serve immediately

This sandwich is one of my favorites. Every time I serve this dish to family and friends, it is a hit since it is delicious, visually appealing, and always the star of the show.

Recipe Chef Notes + Tips

Keeping and Freezing: Store the toppings, bread, horseradish cream spread, and buns in separate plastic wrap-lined containers in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Unfortunately, the components in this recipe will not freeze well. This sauce is fantastic on a variety of other foods than sandwiches, so be sure to experiment with it on various types of sandwiches, such as those made with chicken, turkey, or ham. Every 6 to 7 minutes or so, I baste the onions with the balsamic mixture to help increase the taste and caramelize them a little bit more.

NOTES FROM THE CHEF:

  • Don’t allow the bread selection restrict your options or your ability to be creative. To make things easier, you can use whichever type of bread you choose. For the roast beef, I’m a major lover of anything that is natural, organic, and free of filler protein
  • However, I’m not a huge fan of anything that is high in fat. Make sure to save part of the roast prime rib for a roast beef sandwich whenever you cook it. This horseradish cream is fantastic on a variety of other foods besides roast beef sandwiches, so be sure to experiment with it on other sandwiches, such as those with chicken, turkey, or ham.

These hot roast beef sandwiches are precisely that – simple, really good, and stupidly simple to prepare in the first place. Put them on a beautiful tray, and your visitors will savor every last cheesy morsel they consume. Recipe provided by culinary blogger Mikayla Marin of The Flour Handprint, who claims that the nicest aspect about these cookies is how quickly they can be made.

Once they’re hot and ready to eat, it takes only 15 minutes in the oven to prepare them.

Take pleasure in the simplicity and minimum cleaning, and, of course, save a couple for yourself!

Gather the ingredients to prepare these easy hot roast beef sandwiches

Mash-up by Mikayla Marin The beauty of this dish is that it is quite simple to prepare and uses relatively common ingredients that can be found at practically any grocery shop. Starting with a 12-pack of slider rolls, you can get started. Then it’s simply a 12 pound roast beef slice, six slices of provolone cheese, and two fast sauces to round off the meal. Among the spreads is one that is made of mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, whole grain mustard, apple cider vinegar, and dried onions and is used to spread on the sliced rolls.

There are three tablespoons of butter, one tablespoon of honey, and a teaspoon of salt in this recipe.

The main ingredients are beef, cheese, and bread

Mash-up by Mikayla Marin This recipe may be used in a variety of ways. If you like, you may use any type of roll you want, whether it’s Hawaiian rolls, brioche, or the classic white roll. Marin does recommend going with the grab-and-tear type if you want to make assembling a snap. She chose brioche-style rolls for her rolls, as shown in the photo above. You may use any type of roast beef you choose for this dish as well. Alternatively, you may purchase pre-packaged slices, ask the deli counter to chop some bigger slices, or even utilize leftover roast beef from supper the night before.

This dish calls forprovolone, which is mellow, gooey, and excellent when coupled with roasted meat and vegetables.

Prepare the sandwich spread

Mash-up by Mikayla Marin This simple hot roast beef sandwich recipe would be incomplete without an oniony, creamy spread for the interior. It’s like the frosting on the cake – they just wouldn’t be the same without it. It just takes 2 tablespoons of dried onions, 3 tablespoons of mayonnaise, and 2 teaspoons each of apple cider vinegar, whole grain mustard, and Worcestershire sauce to make this delicious sandwich. If you’re missing one of these components, there are a few things you can do to make the dish taste exactly as good as it did with the missing element.

To do this, you’ll want to use closer to 3 to 4 teaspoons. Instead of apple cider vinegar, white wine, rice wine, or golden balsamic vinegar can be used for success. If you prefer yellow or Dijon mustard, decrease the amount to 1 teaspoon instead of the full teaspoon called for in the recipe.

Slice open the bread as one piece

Mash-up by Mikayla Marin Making the 12 rolls into one simple “loaf” is a clever tip for getting them made and into the oven in record time. Simply remove the entire package from the refrigerator and set it on a chopping board. Make a horizontal cut across the centre of the fruit with a sharp knife so that you may open it. Keep your palm flat on the top of the knife and move gently so that the knife does not come into contact with your fingers. Before you do anything else, spread the sandwich spread that you just created onto the top and bottom of the sandwich buns and set aside.

Layer on the meat and cheese

Mash-up by Mikayla Marin There isn’t any special approach to employ in this situation. Simply arrange the roast beef slices on the bottom of the rolls in a uniform layer over the bottom of the buns. On top of it, arrange the cheese slices in a layering pattern. The recipe calls for six, but Marin writes that there were eight in the box she purchased, so if you prefer it extra cheesy, feel free to use those as well. Finally, secure the sandwiches’ tops with a rubber band. Organize them on a baking sheet or in a 9×13-inch baking dish, and prepare a piece of aluminum foil to wrap over them.

Make the butter sauce, and bake the sandwiches

Mash-up by Mikayla Marin All that’s left to do is combine the ingredients for the butter sauce in a small saucepan. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine one teaspoon of honey, one-fourth teaspoon of salt, and three tablespoons of butter until the mixture is smooth. Melt them together, stirring constantly, until the salt is completely dissolved. Use a pastry brush or a silicone brush to generously cover the tops of each and every bun with the honey butter mixture. Cover the pan with aluminum foil and bake for 15 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

If there are any leftovers, simply place them in a jar and store them in the refrigerator.

Recipe for a Quick and Easy Hot Roast Beef Sandwich These hot roast beef sandwiches are really simple, delicious, and straightforward to prepare.

  • 1 12 pound roast beef slice
  • 6 provolone cheese slices
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 12 slider rolls
  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons whole grain mustard
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. To prepare the sandwich sauce, combine the dried onions, mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce in a mixing bowl. Slice the bread open by cutting through the centre of the rolls, ensuring that they remain as a single piece of bread. Half of the sauce should be spread on the bottom of the bread, and the remaining sauce should be spread on the interior of the top. Layer the roast beef on top, followed by the provolone cheese slices. Stack the sandwiches on a baking sheet or a 9×13-inch baking dish and bake for 15 minutes at 350°F. Melt the butter, honey, and salt in a microwave-safe bowl until completely melted. Stir until the honey and salt are completely dissolved. Apply a thin layer of the butter mixture to the top of the bread and cover loosely with aluminum foil
  2. Bake for 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the sauce is heated throughout

Is there anyone who remembers the Arby’s advertisements from the 1990s that promoted their Roast Beef Sandwich — especially, their roast beef and cheese sandwich? It’s one of those advertisements that stood out to me for some reason, and I’m not sure what it was about it.
