Occasionally offered by the multinational fast food restaurant chainMcDonald’s, the McRibi is a barbecue-flavored pork sandwich. It was initially added to the McDonald’s menu in 1981, following successful marketing efforts the year before that. It was withdrawn off the menu in 1985 as a result of sluggish sales. It was reintroduced in 1989 and remained on the menu in a number of nations up to 2005. For the past many years, it has generally been made available for a limited period each year in most areas where it is served, mainly during the fall season, despite the fact that it has been a permanent menu item at McDonald’s restaurants in Germany and Luxembourg since 2006.
Product description
McDonald’s McRib sandwich, which is made out of a restructuredboneless porkpatty that is formed into the shape of a small rack of ribs and served on a 512 inch (14 cm) bun, is a popular fast-food item. Meat restructuring was created by the United States Army in order to provide low-cost meat to troops in combat. Dr. Roger Mandigo, a meat scientist at Natick Army Labs, perfected the procedure, which resulted in the creation of the McRib patty. It is typically made out of groundpork shoulder and other components.
Their work (that of the Natick Center) was presented at technical gatherings.
− Roger Mandigo, a contractor for the Natick Center and a meat scientist, As part of its effort to elevate pork to “the same level of importance as beef in the institutional market,” the National Pork Producers Council provided funding to Mandigo to demonstrate how to use the new technology.
The McRib Jr. was only available for a limited period of time in 2000. This variation of the sandwich used a conventional hamburger bread for the roll and came with two pickles and a smaller pork patty on the side.
History
The McRib first appeared in the United States in 1981, and was only available for a brief period. René Arend, a Luxembourger who was born in the United States, was the first Executive Chef at McDonald’s and was responsible for the invention of Chicken McNuggets in 1979. The McNuggets were such a hit with customers that every franchise wanted to carry them, according to Arend in a 2009 interview. “There was no structure in place to ensure a sufficient supply of chicken. We needed something fresh to offer the other franchisees as a new product, so we brainstormed ideas.
- In a semi-chrome packet about the size of a regular ketchup package, the sauce seemed to be a transparent liquid.
- It proved to be a successful test marketing campaign in the Midwest, and it was eventually put to the restaurant’s regular menu throughout the United States in 1981.
- It returned for a promotion after a period of several years.
- Additionally, the McRib was brought back on occasion in 1989, 1990 (as part of the “BBQ in a Bag” promotion), 1991, 1992 (together with the Western Omelette McMuffin as part of a Western promotion), and 1993.
- A promotional campaign by McDonald’s (which was depicted in the film as “RocDonald’s”) promoted the return of the Flintstones with McRib packaging depicting the characters and a television ad starring Rosie O’Donnell in her portrayal as Betty Rubble.
2005–present
A press statement from McDonald’s on November 1, 2005, announced that the McRib will be permanently withdrawn from the menu as a result of a “McRib Farewell Tour.” McRib.com, a website registered to McDonald’s, contained a petition to “Save the McRib,” which was sponsored by the “Boneless Pig Farmers Association of America,” which was a satirical parody of the organization. Website for the “McRib Farewell Tour II” was launched on October 16, 2006. When the McRib returned to the United States in October 2007, it marked the start of a third “farewell tour.” In 2007, McDonald’s sold 30 million hamburgers prepared with more than 7 million pounds (3 million kg) of pork.
- Throughout 2008 and 2009, more limited-time regional offers were made in various regions of the United States as well as in Canada, with the majority of them being in the Midwest.
- McRib, Alan Klein, originator of the McRib Locator website, and Adam Winer, on November 2, 2010, McDonald’s launched its six-week worldwide McRib availability with an event in New York City, dubbed the Legends of the McRibe.
- McDonald’s claimed that it was responsible for a 4.8 percent increase in sales in November 2010.
- For a limited time, the McRib was available in Canada from June 21 to August 1, 2011.
- The offer ended on November 14.
- The McRib was one of six limited-edition McDonald’s delicacies named after former host cities that were introduced during the World Cup.
- Sales of the McRib in New Zealand far above estimates, with stocks depleted within days of the burger’s debut and eateries running out of their allotted quantities of the burger.
(which would instead be used to debut the Cheddar Bacon Onion Angus Burger, or “CBO”).
The McRib was not launched nationally and was only available in a few cities in a few states in the United States in 2013 as a result of the firm releasing various new items.
The McRib was once again available for purchase beginning on October 20, 2014 and ending on January 4, 2015, but only in a limited number of locations and states across the United States (a la the 2006 “McRib Farewell Tour II” promotion).
From October 2015 until January 2016, the McRib was once again available for purchase, although only in a few cities and states in the United States (55 percent of McDonald’s outlets).
Local McDonald’s Twitter accounts in Southern California and Hawaii reported that the McRib would be returning to these locations on November 2nd and 9th, respectively, according to their respective accounts.
McDonald’s stated that the McRib would be made available statewide in the United States for the first time since 2012, starting on December 2nd, in the year 2020, marking the first time since 2012.
They had tweeted the day before, on September 29, that they would be releasing some significant news. Before November 1, the McRib was available at a limited number of locations.

In November 2011, theHumane Society of the United Statesfiled a complaint with theU.S. Securities and Exchange Commissionagainst the maker of McRib meat,Smithfield Foods, citing cruel and unusual treatment of the animals used in the McRib patty manufacturing. The lawsuit includes the usage ofgestation cratesand inadequate and unclean housing circumstances, as well as a violation of basic animal welfare.
Limited availability
In addition to theories about the fluctuating price and unreliable supply chains of bulk pork, speculation on the limited availability of the McRib includes theories about the manipulation of availability windows to turn the product into a better loss leader for the company and the generation of renewed enthusiasm and higher sales as a result of scarcity. The McRib is available at McDonald’s restaurants nationwide. According to an informal study published in 2011 titled “A Conspiracy of Hogs: The McRib as Arbitrage,” there is a correlation between the price of pork and the timing of McDonald’s offering the sandwich; all five of the company’s US McRib offerings between 2005 and 2011 occurred during periods of low prices for bulk pork in the United States market.
In popular culture
When The Simpsons aired an episode called I’m Spelling as Fast as I Can, the sandwich, as well as the cultural phenomenon known as “chasing the McRib,” was the major subject. The sandwich, which is spoofed as the “Ribwich,” became popular and gained a cult following.

The McRib is back. Here’s why McDonald’s doesn’t sell it year-round
New York is the capital of the United States (CNN Business) McDonald’s McRib is once again available. Earlier this week, the fast food firm revealed that the BBQ sandwich would be offered at nearly 10,000 outlets starting as early as Monday. However, according to McDonald’s, the menu item will only be available for a limited time. That was done on purpose. According to Alexander Chernev, a professor of marketing at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, seasonal commodities are a significant marketing tool for the food sector.
- For example, when the weather becomes cooler, Starbucks consumers frequently get excited about Pumpkin Spice Lattes.
- It provides consumers a cause to come to the store when they have these special things that are only available for a limited time period, according to Chernev.
- In August, Dunkin’ Donuts (DNKN) announced a deluge of pumpkin-flavored confections to be released.
- During the spring months, Girl Scout cookies will be available for purchase.
- “You have to maintain consistency because it is the brand motto,” Chernev explained.
- Seasonal offers can also provide an opportunity for firms to test out a new product.
- Aside from that, Chernev pointed out that seasonal menu items provide marketers with something new to talk about every three months or so.
- Several years ago, a firm spokeswoman stated that “we endeavor to provide our consumers with unique, seasonal goods to commemorate each season,” and that “customer feedback has been incredibly favorable” as a result of this.
- A consumer strategist at Morningstar, R.J.
- Items that could be popular for a few months would probably not create enough demand to be profitable year-round.
Four years later, McDonald’s removed it off their menu entirely. Despite the fact that the McRib never attained widespread popularity, there were some areas of the country where it established a strong enough following to justify bringing it back every now and then.
Hottovy said that when firms introduce seasonal products, sales normally increase for a brief period of time. However, when the main customers of the limited-time offer have been satisfied, the demand for the product begins to decline within a few weeks. So savor your McRib sandwiches while they’re still available. We can all agree that you wouldn’t want one in April, to put it mildly.
