Healthier Fried Fish Sandwich {30 Minutes}

If you believe that cooking a healthy fish fillet sandwich at home is an insurmountable challenge, you are mistaken. With just 30 minutes of prep time, you can have this fried fish sandwich with homemade tartar sauce on the table in under 30 minutes. It’s so amazing that it puts McDonald’s filet-o-fish to shame. For me, eating fast food was not something I did very often as a child, so it was a memorable experience when I had my first meal at McDonald’s. Surprise, surprise: my grandmother Mary Jane, who was a home chef who prepared everything from scratch and insisted on me eating all of my vegetables, was the one who first exposed me to the fast food industry.

However, on that particular day, and on every subsequent visit to Mickey D’s, we did not order burgers.

Evidently, I’m not the only one.

As a matter of course, I always had to ask for additional pickles on my sandwich since certain things never change.

And that’s how Lauren was able to alleviate my desires for fish sandwiches by creating a completely amazing meal that we will undoubtedly make again and again.

How to Make a Fried Fish Sandwich That Feels Almost Healthy

In most cases, if I’m given the option of choosing between grilled, baked, or fried, I’ll go for the healthier options such as baked or grilled instead. Although there are exceptions to every rule, I usually choose fried fish for my tacos and will indulge in fried chicken every now and then since, after all, this gal has to eat too! The steps Lauren outlines for preparing this meal make me completely comfortable with the fact that the fish is fried. First and foremost, there is no cloyingly thick batter in this recipe.

  1. Saltines that aren’t salted?
  2. Using buttermilk to moisten the panko breading, the fish is tenderized while yet being light and airy in texture.
  3. Second, the fish is cooked fast in 350°F oil, which helps to keep things healthy-ish for the most part.
  4. I choose grapeseed oil because of its high smoke point, which makes it excellent for frying and assembling a sandwich that takes only a few minutes.
  5. The fish should be flaky and opaque when the temperature reaches 145°F.
  6. This allows air to travel all the way around the fish, ensuring that it remains crispy on all sides throughout.
  • A wonderfully soft, buttery brioche bun that has been warmed on a baking sheet in the toaster oven so that the top of the bun remains soft, or you may microwave it for 15-20 seconds instead of warming it in the oven. The original recipe called for brioche slider buns, but I couldn’t locate any, so I used a regular-sized bread and made three sandwiches instead of four sliders. On the bottom bun, a tiny piece of American or cheddar cheese is melted and served. Tartar sauce mixed with sweet relish to give it a tangy zip is delicious. Use Greek yogurt instead of mayonnaise to further decrease the overall burden. Slices of dill pickles with a tangy kick. There are always more pickles. As a significant twist on Lauren’s original recipe, I’d suggest adding some sliced tomato, red onion, and shredded lettuce to the mix. If you’re really looking to boost your fish sandwich game, you could also try adding some sliced red onion and shredded lettuce to the mix.

Best Fish for a Fish Sandwich

Generally speaking, any skinless, mild white fish will suffice. The halibut I chose here is at the top of my price range, and the quality demonstrates why, but a more affordable fish such as cod or grouper would be my first choice if the money allowed.

You can serve this fish sandwich with everything you’d offer with burgers or at a barbeque, and you can’t go wrong with some good old potato chips or french fries on the side as a side dish.

Healthy-ish Fried Fish Sandwich

Saltine crackers that have been finely crushed and combined with panko bread crumbs give the crunch for these simple fried fish fillets that are quick and easy to prepare. The original recipe asked for double the number of ingredients for the buttermilk and the saltine mixture, but we ended up with a lot of leftovers, so I reduced those amounts to the proportions shown above.

To ground the crackers, place them in a gallon-sized zipped bag, squeeze out all of the air, seal the bag, and gently press the crumbs with a rolling pin until they are a fine meal. Servings 3 regular-size sandwiches or 4 sliders are served.

  • Mix well to combine. Heat 2 inches of oil in a large Dutch oven until a deep-fry or candy thermometer reaches 350°F, about 15 minutes. One piece of fish at a time, dunk it in the buttermilk, shake out any excess, then immerse it in the saltine mixture and place it on a plate or small baking sheet to dry. Repeat the process with the remaining fish pieces. Fill the pot with a few fish pieces at a time, being cautious not to overcrowd the pan with them. Cook for 2 minutes on each side, or for 2 minutes on each side if the fillets are taller than the oil, fry for 2 minutes on each side until golden brown. Then, while the fish is still hot, transfer it to a wire rack set over a baking sheet or something similar to collect any dripping oil and season with kosher salt while it is still hot. Preheat the broiler or a toaster oven while the fish is cooking. Place the tops and bottoms of the brioche buns on a baking sheet and top each of the bottom buns with a piece of cheese. Bake for 15 minutes. Bake for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is slightly melted and the buns are warm and toasty
  • Remove from oven and set aside. To make the sandwiches, top the bottom bun with the melted cheese, pickle slices, and the halibut, then smear the top bun with tartar sauce and top your sandwich with the other ingredients.

Fish Sandwiches Recipe

A fish sandwich is technically any form of sandwich that contains fish, and while there are several types of fish sandwiches available, ranging from tuna salad sandwiches to salmon burgers and frozen, store-bought fish patties, this recipe produces a classic crisp cod sandwich that is delicious. Using a basic cornmeal breading, the fish fillet is battered and deep fried till golden brown and crispy. Make the finest fish sandwich you’ve ever had by putting it on a bun with lettuce, tomato, and tartar sauce.

Which Type of Fish for Fried Fish Sandwiches?

Cod is used in this dish, and it is a popular fish for feeding families since it has a moderate flavor and a rich, flaky white flesh. In the northern Pacific Ocean, the two most prevalent species of cod are the Atlantic Cod, which dwells in colder waters and deeper sea areas across the North Atlantic, and the Pacific Cod, which is found in both the eastern and western portions of the northern Pacific Ocean. As cod and haddock belong to the same family, they are occasionally referred to as cod and sold as such.

Fish Sandwich Sauce

I’ve included a recipe for a quick and easy homemade tartar sauce that goes perfectly with the quick fried fish I made. If you like, you may use store-bought tartar sauce, but if you prefer something different, you can experiment with other sauces. The following condiments are also excellent choices: remoulade sauce; ketchup; mayonnaise; creamy Dijon mayonnaise; a lemon basil mayonnaise; and this burger sauce, which is composed with ketchup; mayonnaise; lemon juice; and pickle relish

The Best Oil for Crispy Fish Sandwich Recipes

Fry the cod in your choice of oil: peanut oil, vegetable oil, or canola oil. Peanut oil is my preferred cooking oil since it is inexpensive, has a high smoke point, and does not impart any taste to the fish.

How to Make Crispy Fish Sandwiches

Make a note of this recipe since the basic ingredients and straightforward approach will make these sandwiches a staple in your household! They’re crispy on the exterior, soft and flaky on the inside, and really delicious!

  • Fresh cod (or haddock) fillets
  • All-purpose flour
  • Cornmeal
  • Baking powder
  • Egg
  • Buttermilk (or ordinary milk can be used)
  • Salt and pepper. seasoning with salt and pepper
  • Frying oil for frying
  • Sandwich buns that have been buttered and toasted, along with other toppings of choice, are used for serving.

Step 1: Allow Fish to Come to Room Temperature

Place the fish on a counter and let it to warm up to room temperature for about 30 minutes, turning it occasionally. Dry well before seasoning both sides with salt and pepper.

Step 2: Prepare Breading

Mix the flour, cornmeal, and baking powder together in a small bowl until well combined. In a separate bowl, mix together the egg and buttermilk until well combined.

Step 3: Dredge

Take each piece of fish and dip it into the egg mixture first, then into the flour mixture, working with one fillet at a time. Make sure you shake off any excess coating before putting the breaded fillets on a wire rack to cool.

Step 4: Fry Fish

Fry the fish in batches in a Dutch oven or deep fryer filled with 2 12 inches of heated oil for a total of around 7 minutes, working in batches.

Temperature for Fried Fish

When frying the fish, you don’t need to use a thermometer. Instead, when the oil is heated (but not smoking), put a drop of water into the pan and wait for it to sizzle. If the water sizzles, the oil is hot enough for the fish to cook. You want to keep the temperature of the pan fairly consistent while the cod is cooking, so avoid packing the pan with too many pieces at once (which will bring down the temperature). If the oil is flying everywhere and the temperature appears to be too high, you can reduce the heat a little further.

If you’re using a deep-fryer or a deep-fry thermometer in your Dutch oven, you’ll want to keep the temperature consistent at roughly 375 degrees F throughout. It is acceptable for the temperature to fall below 350 degrees F, but strive to maintain it at least around that temperature.

How to Know When Fried Fish is Done

We can safely assume that if your oil is the proper temperature, when the fish is golden brown and the crust is flawlessly flaky, the fish will be perfectly soft and cooked through. The overall cooking time in the frying oil is around 7 minutes in most cases. Fish is done when it flakes easily when pierced with a fork and no longer has a transparent appearance to it. When properly cooked, deep-fried fish will float to the surface of the water. If you want to use an instant-read thermometer, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States recommends that cooked fish be cooked to a safe temperature of 145°F.

Never use aluminum foil to keep your hot fried fish warm. This retains steam and moisture, causing your fish to get soggy as a result. Instead, pat the fish fillets dry with paper towels before seasoning with salt and baking on a baking pan at 200 degrees F. Meanwhile, you may continue frying the other batches of fish fillets, which will help to keep them warm (without overcooking them).

When to Season Fried Fish

Just before breading the fish, I like to season it with salt and pepper to taste. Then, while the fish is still warm from the fryer, you may season it with a little extra salt and pepper, if you choose, before serving. By including cayenne pepper or herbs of your choosing into the flour mixture, you may enhance the flavor of this dish even more.

The finest way to enjoy fried fish is to serve it hot, straight from the frying. Fish that has been cooked can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. For those who require the fried fish to be kept longer, the leftovers can be frozen for up to one month. The fact that this crispy fish tends to go a touch mushy while it rests in the refrigerator should not be overlooked. Reheating Instructions: If you want to maintain the crispy surface of your fried fish, the oven is the finest method of reheating it.

While the oven is heating, set the fish on the counter to come to room temperature while the oven is heating.

  • 12 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon salt and pepper to taste
  • 12 cup all-purpose flour
  • 14 cup cornmeal

  • Mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon or stone-ground mustard
  • 1 teaspoon chopped fresh dill or parsley (optional)
  • 1 12 teaspoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 cup mayonnaise Season with salt and pepper to taste

  • Combine all of the ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Season with salt and pepper to taste, if desired. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator until ready to serve

  • Mix the flour, cornmeal, and baking powder together in a small bowl until well combined. In a small bowl, mix together the egg and buttermilk until well combined. Pour the oil into a Dutch oven or other heavy-bottomed pot until it reaches a depth of 2 12 inches. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches a temperature of around 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Each piece of fish should be dipped first in the egg mixture, carefully brushing off any excess, and then into the flour mixture to coat completely. Remove any excess coating by scrubbing it off. Prepare a wire rack to hold the battered fish. Using tongs, gently put the fish in the heated oil, working in batches if required. Cook for approximately 4 minutes, or until golden brown. Gently turn the pan over and cook until the second side is golden brown, about 3 minutes longer. Remove the pan from the oil and place it on a tray lined with paper towels to drain. Immediately after taking the fish out of the oil, lightly salt it
  • Place the first batch of fish in a 200 degree F oven to keep warm while you prepare the second batch of fish
  • Serve on buttered, toasted buns with lettuce, tomato, and tartar sauce on the side.

The nutritional information is only a rough approximation, and it does not take into account the oil that is absorbed by the fish during the frying operation.

It also does not contain any extra toppings such as tartar sauce, buns, or any side dishes.

Looking for the BEST Fish Sandwich recipe?

These easy-to-make Fish Sandwiches, which feature two creative variations on a classic, are a hit with both kids and adults. The best part is that they can be made using basic materials for less than $10! Easy dinners, such as fish sandwiches, are some of our favorite go-to comfort foods since they are quick and simple to prepare. I grew up eating fish sandwiches, or “burgers,” prepared using Gorton’s Fish Sandwich Patties, and Jared grew up eating them as well. My mother used to make fish sandwiches on days when she didn’t want to cook a complete meal because she needed a break.

Now, fast forward 20 years, and our children still enjoy fish sandwiches, albeit only about two-thirds of them eat them with all of the extras.

Elements for a Kid’s Fish Sandwich

So, because I enjoy having a good time every now and again, I attempted to be creative with my youngest two children’s fish sandwiches. Is it possible to discern that they are intended to be small fish on a piece of bread? The patties are made using Gorton’s Fish Sandwich patties and melted American cheese on the inside. I used a country white piece of bread for this recipe. Because these bread pieces are normally bigger, you may want to use 1 1/2 Gorton’s Fish Sandwich Patties each slice to ensure that the bread is completely filled.

The scales and fins of the fish were made from cucumber.

My children were directly involved in the creation of these, so please accept my apologies if they do not appear to be fish.

But, let’s face it…

Kids want to play with their food, pull it apart, and eat it in “their” own special way, which is why these kid-friendly fish sandwiches are a hit. They received two thumbs up from the smaller ones as well! Now that my oldest has developed her mother’s taste buds, it’s a good thing for me. My daughter really adores the New England Ultimate Fish Sandwich I cooked for her and her father. Obviously, I made up that title, but you know what? It works. It is effective!

Ingredients for the Best Fish Sandwich

The fact that kids interact with their food, pick it apart, and eat it in “their” own unique fashion means that these kid-friendly fish sandwiches are a success. As well as from the smaller ones, they received two thumbs up! Since then, my oldest has grown taste buds similar to her mother’s, which is ideal in my opinion. My daughter really adores the New England Ultimate Fish Sandwich I cooked for her and her dad. While the title was entirely fictitious on my part, you know what? It’s effective, too.

On a Friday, forget about the fish! Every day of the week, a good piece of fried fish is a treat for us. Fried fish is a delectable treat. However, it may frequently benefit from a little assistance in order to progress from excellent to exceptional. In this post, we will discuss what to serve with fried fish and provide you with some delectable suggestions for the next time you are presenting the catch of the day at your dinner table.

Fried Fish Sides

Let’s start with a tried and true classic! Traditional dishes such as fish and chips are popular for a reason: they’re delicious and easy to prepare. In terms of filling meals, it doesn’t get much more full than fish and chips when you’re on the hunt for something substantial. Prior to draining, we prefer to parboil our french fries for around 2 minutes over high heat. When they steam, the surface becomes floury due to the flour used. After that, we cook them in hot oil until they are softly golden brown on the outside.

They are ideal for dipping into a generous dollop of ketchup that has been offered beside them.

2. Mashed Peas

Making mashed peas is a basic process. Because they are extremely filling, you won’t need to serve a large part of them. The benefit of serving peas with fish is that it offers a much-needed dash of color to the meal, which is always welcome. They have a mild flavor as well, which will allow the star of the show, the fish, to really come through on the plate. To prepare, just cook peas in boiling water with a touch of salt until tender. After about 5 minutes, rinse the peas and mash them with a potato masher until they are nice and mushy.

Depending on the type of fish you’re cooking, it may become a touch greasy. When it comes to cutting through the richness, nothing beats a side of wonderfully crisp, thinly sliced veggies. White cabbage is the most important element in coleslaw. This has a mild acidic taste to it and goes exceptionally well with seafood. Combined with rich and creamy mayonnaise (and possibly some lemon juice), you have the perfect combination.

If you want to make a meal that is a little more visually appealing, combine white cabbage with red cabbage.

4.Tartare Sauce

Tartare sauce is a typical side dish that is served with fish in the United States. Many recognizable ingredients come together to provide one of the most delicious seafood side dishes ever created. More than a tinge of richness in the sauce complements the dish, particularly when served with creamy white fish. It also prevents your meal from being too dry. Also present in the pickles are acidity elements and, depending on whether or not you have used chopped capers, a tinge of salty.

5. Salt and Vinegar Chips

A fish’s best companion is a combination of salt and vinegar. If you have fried or battered your fish, this is an excellent method of cooking it. The batter absorbs the vinegar and gets slightly soft as a result of this. It also creates small sticky spots on the surface of the food that hold the salt, making every bite wonderfully delectable. This method works with chips as well. To prepare, simply thinly slice potatoes into discs and bake until done (leave the skin on). Using heated oil, fry the discs until they are brown and somewhat crispy, then sprinkle with salt and a splash of malt vinegar.

6. Roasted Cauliflower

Fried fish is delicious, but it may be time-consuming, so you may want to serve it with a side dish that isn’t too time-consuming as well. Cauliflower roasted in the oven is the solution. Simply boil the florets for 5 minutes before placing them in the oven with a sprinkle of salt and a drizzle of olive oil on top. Bake for approximately 20 minutes, or until the tops of the muffins begin to color slightly.

7.Mashed Potatoes

It doesn’t get much easier than making mashed potatoes, does it? There are a variety of reasons why it is an excellent fish side dish. First and foremost, they are excellent in absorbing juices. If you serve your side dish with a sauce, you can be sure that it will be thoroughly soaked up by your guests. Second, you have the option of ‘pimping’ your potatoes. Before mashing the potatoes, we like to add a handful of boiled peas to produce a pea and potato smash. Alternatively, you could combine cream cheese with a pinch of garlic powder to create something truly special.

8. Lemon Roast Potatoes

Lemons and fish are best of friends, as you might expect. As previously stated, there is something about acidic flavors that works particularly well with fried fish. Combine the best of this with lemon and potatoes to create a delicious meal. Simply parboil your potatoes before roasting them for approximately 35 minutes in a generous amount of oil. 5 minutes before they are due to come out, give them a squeeze of lemon juice, and grate some zest over them before finishing them off.

9.Rustic Bread Rolls

Sometimes the simplest solution is the best. One of life’s joys is a fried fish sandwich, which can be found at any restaurant.

Take a soft roll and divide it in half. Make sure to use enough of butter in your preparations (and perhaps a pinch of salt and pepper). Place your fried fish in the center of the plate. Everything has been completed. A picture of perfection taken using a handheld camera.

10. Microwave Pickles

These are quite simple to prepare and pair well with a variety of seafood. A sliced cucumber, a teaspoon of salt, some chopped onion, a splash of white vinegar, and a spoonful of white sugar, to taste, can be microwaved in a microwave-safe dish. They will take around 6 minutes, with a tactical stir thrown in for good measure. When the onions have become transparent, sweet, and soft, the preparation is complete, according to the instructions.

11. Sweet Potato Wedges

This is a small twist on the classic dish of fish and chips. As the name implies, these wedges have a subtle sweetness to them, which makes them a perfect accompaniment to fried fish. They are somewhat healthier than typical French fries, which is the cherry on top. Additionally, they have a pretty beautiful orange hue that can brighten up your dish.

  • The following side dishes are included: French Fries, Mashed Peas, Coleslaw, Tartare Sauce, Salt and Vinegar Chips, Roasted Cauliflower, Mashed Potatoes, Lemon Roast potatoes, rustic bread rolls, microwave pickles, and sweet potato wedges.

The nicest thing about fish is that it often has a moderate flavor, which allows it to pair nicely with practically any side dish or vegetable. It’s not difficult to figure out what to serve with fried fish. Make use of a variety of colors and tastes that are either opposing or complimentary to one another. When it comes to serving fried fish, what is your favorite side dish to serve with it?
