Ideas for non-sandwich lunches, including bread-free alternatives

Sandwiches used to be something I detested as a child. My mother is in such distress. I remember her coming downstairs every morning at the crack of dawn, drinking a cup of instant coffee as the sound of fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, and packing a non-sandwich lunch for me (as well as my brother and sister). Since there was no internet, Amazon, or Walmart back then, she was forced to come up with inventive lunch ideas on her own, which she did with great success. Then she’d pack them in my really hip denim lunch bag from the 1980s, which contained nothing but sandwich bags and thermoses.

  • Is it possible that you remember what you ate for lunch when you were in primary school?
  • And every now and then, my mother would put a hot dog in a thermos for me, and it was as if I had won the lunchtime jackpot!
  • Sandwiches are just, well, they’re a little dull, don’t you think?
  • well, let’s just say that if somebody was willing to prepare me any one of these dishes for lunch, I would throw down the dish towel, leap onto the coffee table, and burst out into song.
  • Are there any takers?
  • Darn.
  • We personally only have three school lunch ideas on repeat in our family, so a fresh dish would be fantastic right about now.

30 Non Sandwich Lunchbox Ideas

Lunch is more than just sandwiches, believe it or not! A lot of individuals make the goal to bring a healthy lunch to work every day at the beginning of the new year. The notion is excellent since a prepared lunch is not only better for you than a restaurant meal, but it is also better for your bank account as well. Furthermore, when you prepare your own meals, you can better cater to your own unique preferences than you can in a fast-food drive-through. You can omit the olives if you don’t care for them.

  1. Because of this, some people instantly associate the phrase “packed lunch” with the word “sandwich.” As a result, they had tuna on Monday, bologna on Tuesday, peanut butter on Wednesday, and so on.
  2. This results in the great resolution being abandoned.
  3. In addition to salads, sandwiches, muffins, and pancakes, there are a variety of other delicious options for packing a lunchbox.
  4. With so many options, you’ll never be tempted to grab something from the drive-through window again.
  5. Anyone you’re packing a lunch for tomorrow morning will be delighted to get one of these treats!
  6. Enjoy!

Despite the fact that my mother was an amazing home cook, she never used her skills to prepare our school lunches. Sandwiches were always a mainstay of our mid-day meals, with a limited selection of fillings to choose from. Perhaps it is due to the impact of cuisines from around the world, the explosion of inspiration on Pinterest, or a willingness to experiment in the kitchen, but lunches appear to be more inventive than they have ever been. And, after all, why not? Making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on a daily basis might become as monotonous as eating one.

34 Non-Sandwich Lunchbox Ideas for Back to School

Please see our disclosure policy if you have any questions about this post’s affiliate links. Have your children grown tired of eating sandwiches for lunch? No longer know what kinds of sandwiches to include in lunchboxes for your children? Take a look at some of our favorite lunchbox options that aren’t sandwiches! After sending my daughters off to their first day of school last week, it occurred to me that next year I will be sending my eldest daughter, Mia, off to high school for the first time.

  • It feels like it was only yesterday when she was preparing to start school.
  • Yikes!
  • Many of us parents have already sent our children off to their first day of school this year, and the rest of us will do so in the coming weeks, and we have breathed a sigh of relief that we will not have to come up with another summer activity or camp to keep our children occupied.
  • One of the things I enjoy about my position at Produce for Kids is that I get to develop new recipes (sometimes with the assistance of my daughters) to help inspire other parents and demonstrate that healthy eating does not have to be expensive or difficult to do.
  • Whether it’s packing lunches or standing in line at the school lunch counter, encouraging our children to make healthy choices is critical.
  • After a few days, though, reality settles in and we find ourselves locked in a sandwich rut.
  • However, we frequently hear from parents who state that their children dislike sandwiches or that they are seeking for methods to spice up their children’s lunchboxes other than sandwiches.

Prepare tacos by spreading a tablespoon of spicy ranch dip on a tortilla (I make mine with a Hidden Valley package and an open bottle of sour cream) and piling on fresh mixed greens, a quarter cup of cubed chicken breast, diced tomatoes, shredded cheddar cheese, and a tablespoon of picante sauce. Wrap the mixture snugly in the tortilla and serve it with a side of crispy tortilla chips to complete the meal.

This lunch is really more of a leftover dinner, and it’s quite simple to put together. Cook a two-pound pork loin (shoulder and butt are also good options) in a slow cooker with one cup of rootbeer on low for six hours on the stovetop. Take the pork out of the slow cooker and shred it with two forks. Drain the liquid from the slow cooker and add the shredded pork back in, along with your preferred barbecue sauce, to taste. It’s a great supper option. Lunch the next day can be prepared by packing a portion of the pork and potato salad.
