Pulled Pork Sandwich Toppings: 13 Escalating Options

You’re sitting there, hickory logs on the fire, watching the world go by. Six hours have passed, and you can already smell the familiar odors of smoked meat wafting through the house. This is how you kick off a block party, by having your neighbors smell it as well. In the southern United States, the pulled pork sandwich is a classic. Pulled pork, along with a variety of other slow-roasted lumps of meat, is at the heart of the American barbecue culinary tradition. Traditions have been passed down from generation to generation, and it is this style of cuisine that we should see more of in the future.

When it comes to roasting a whole pig or smoking a large slice of meat, people join together to enjoy the experience.

After all of the hard work, it’s time to get down to business.

Outdoor eating, long hours spent around the table, a good laugh, and a few of cold ones are all on the menu.

It’s time to pay tribute to the slow-cooked meat by incorporating it into sandwiches; however, what are the finest toppings for a pulled pork sandwich to serve with it?

These are our favorite Pulled Pork Sandwich Toppings

Finally, what goes on a pulled pork sandwich is entirely up to your personal choice; so long as you eat it, whatever is OK. For your protection, some of these toppings are out of the usual, and even sacrilegious in the eyes of some. According to the experts, “don’t meddle with the classics.” We believe that if something tastes nice, it should be consumed. Continue reading to see some of our topping suggestions.

1. Coleslaw and Pickles, the Traditional Toppings

As a starting point, let’s talk about the basic pulled pork sandwich toppings, because if this is your first time trying one, you’ll want to know how it’s typically eaten. Coleslaw with pickles, or just coleslaw or pickles, are always a hit with the crowd. As you can see, pulled pork is excellent, but it lacks substance and texture. It’s fatty, and it’s downright squishy. You need something crunchy to balance out the dish, which is where the coleslaw comes in. Additionally, pickles are required to break up the fat in order to break up the fatty texture.

Make a delicious slaw by watching this video from How To BBQ Right and learning how to make it from scratch: Coleslaw Recipe for Barbecue – Learn how to prepare coleslaw for pulled pork sandwiches with this recipe.

2. Mango Salsa, Tropically Spicy

Let’s violate the rules and try something completely different. The addition of a mango salsa, which is created with diced tomatoes, onions, jalapenos, and mango, then mixed with chopped coriander and a splash of lime juice, enhances the flavor of everything. The crunch comes from the salsa, while the acidity comes from the lime juice. The sweet flavor of the mango combined with the addicting heat of the jalapeño will convert your sandwich into something completely different.

By the way, mango salsa may be used for a variety of other dishes as well, so save the recipe for future reference. Check out this recipe for Slow Cooker Mango Salsa Pulled Pork from Who Needs a Cape for further inspiration.

3. Red Gravy, the Cajun Holy Trinity

Pulled pork is at its finest when it is covered in a rich sauce. It brings out the meaty, smokey characteristics of the meat without making it seem dry or bland. There are many various sorts of sauces, each with a distinct flavor profile that appeals to a certain type of person. To make your pulled pork even more delectable, consider topping it with crimson gravy before serving. It’s also known as Creole tomato sauce in some circles. Red gravy is produced from tomatoes and celery, bell peppers, and onions, which are considered the holy trinity of Cajun food.

See how Heidy Linn McCallum, owner of McCallum’s Shamrock Patch, prepares a delicious Cajun-Style Red Gravy.

4. Pimento Cheese, a Southern Staple

A blender is used to combine the pimentos, also known as red cherry peppers, cheddar or American cheese, and mayonnaise until smooth. Upon completion, you will have a paste that is very fragrant and beautifully silky: spicy, creamy, and mildly tangy. Consider it a reinforced dip, if you will. Better better, think of it as a spread that has the ability to transform excellent things into wonderful things and delicious dishes into delectable foods. Spread your pimento cheese on your bread and wait to watch what happens.

5. Sun-dried Tomatoes, The Italian Job

Sun-dried tomatoes are exactly what they say they are, yet we never take the time to consider how they came to exist in the first place. When it comes to tomatoe, the majority of the liquid is water, and adding water to your sandwich is a messy process. If only we could enjoy the sweetness of ripe tomatoes, along with all of its savoriness and sharp acidity, without having to consume so much water — which we can, thanks to the invention of sun-dried tomatoes. By adding a couple of them to your sandwich, you’ll be able to level up your sandwich game in the same way as your children do on their video games when they ask for your credit card.

6. Onion Rings, a Match Made in Heaven

Onion rings have a certain something about them that elevates the flavor of any burger or sandwich. They elevate your sandwich by adding height, saltiness, and a delightful crunch. Adding battered onion rings to your sandwich is almost like cheating, but no one is looking at you. When the onion is placed in the heated oil, the skin becomes crispy and the interior caramelizes, resulting in sweet, umami-rich sensations that are hard to replicate in any other way.

Make certain that your rings are crispy rather than mushy. They should be added at the very last as the moisture in the pulled pork can quickly degrade their hard firmness. Check out Marion’s recipe for Slow Cooker Pulled Pork Sliders at Life Tastes Goodblog to see what we’re talking about.

7. Kimchi, the Other Slaw

We stated that pork was fatty; yet, we also stated that a little tanginess may help to balance the fat. The pork was bland in terms of texture, and we suggested that a small crunchiness may help to improve it. Kimchi has all of these nutrients and more. Conjure images of delicious, tangy coleslaw that is infused with earthy flavors, a hint of spice, and an earthy funk. You’re aware that Koreans are masters of the grilled meat, aren’t you? They’ve been doing so since before the United States of America was even conceived.

8. Fried Okra, Soulful One-biters

Since the beginning of time, the brilliant green pods with a gelatinous inside have been a staple of southern cuisine. The ladies’ fingers, which originate in Africa, have made their way onto the American dinner table. Cooking okra is a difficult task, but you can always cut it into chunks, sprinkle it in flour, and deep fry it for the vegan nugget, which is the most popular version of the vegetable. Add a handful of these crispy bits on the top of your pulled pork sandwich to add texture, taste, and, most importantly, nutritious vegetables.

9. Pineapple, Tangy Sweetness

The fact that it is so easy makes it one of our favorite toppings for pulled pork sandwiches. It was featured in 1970s food periodicals, and you may have seen the pictures: Pork steak topped with pineapple slices and cherries is a delectable dish. Pork and pineapple were created to be eaten together; they complement one another well. Put a thick, juicy pineapple slice on top of your pulled pork sandwich; the fresher the pineapple, the better. Consider taking a piece, and then spreading the word to your friends about how delicious this is!

Lindsay, who runs the food blogPinch of Yum, understands exactly what we’re talking about thanks to her grilled pineapple pork sandwiches.

10. Honey Mustard, King of Spreads

Let’s chat about spreads for a minute, and specifically about mustard if we have the opportunity. We are all aware that mustard has a bite to it, as well as a pleasingly pungent taste that works beautifully with meat. Is it possible to use pulled pork in this recipe? Because pork is fatty and salty, it is almost guaranteed to do so. The spicy and oily character of mustard matches the meat rather well, especially if you obtain the honey mustard kind, where the sweetness helps to temper the robust beef flavor.

If you enjoy mustard, you won’t have any trouble incorporating it into your pulled pork sandwich recipe. Take a look at Inspired by Charm to see what we mean. Michael prepares some delicious Pulled Pork Sliders with a Sweet Mustard Marinade for you.

11. Teriyaki Sauce, Flavors of the Orient

Teriyaki sauce is a sweet and sour, umami-rich, soy-based sauce that enhances the flavor of grilled meat without being overpowering. In many ways, it is similar to Asian BBQ sauce and may be used with any meat-based protein, such as teriyaki chicken, to great advantage. Again, slow-cooked pork is not bashful when it comes to taste, and the sauce may be overbearing in certain cases. Before assembling your sandwich, combine the teriyaki sauce with the meat and see as it transforms into something altogether different.

12. Jalapeno Peppers, a Game Changer

In order not to overcomplicate things, jalapeño slices are merely a delectable condiment. I’m sure you can image them on top of a chili dog or a plate of cheese nachos, so why not give them a shot and include them into your pulled pork sandwich? These men are legitimate toppings in every sense of the word. There is no rationale for this; it is simply wonderful food on top of good food. Unless you have a strong aversion to spicy cuisine, go ahead and try it. Jalapenos are a kind of chili pepper that is moderate in flavor.

Once you’ve become acclimated to it, you may experiment with hotter peppers.

13. Pork Rinds, Pork Over Pork

There you have it, the ultimate topping: pork atop pork. Pork rinds are crispy, they’re inexpensive, and they’re delicious. The dryness of the fried pig rinds will be balanced out by the luscious pork flesh, such that you will not even notice the difference. Pork rinds will also provide a lot of volume to your sandwich, which is essential. Avoid store-bought cookies, though, as they are sometimes comprised only of flour. Inquire with your neighborhood butcher, and he’ll take care of you. He’s got the excellent stuff in the rear of the truck.

The Best Pulled Pork Sandwich Toppings: The Ideal Sidekick

Congratulations on your accomplishment of making an outstanding pulled pork sandwich! After then, it’s time to turn it into a full-blown supper. Making a pulled pork sandwich is one thing; ensuring that you have the ideal side for pulled pork is an entirely different ballgame. Here are some suggestions for sides to accompany your sandwich, ranging from healthy selections to trashy, delectable options.

Corn on the Cob

Your outdoor gathering will be more memorable if you provide some good ol’ grilled corn on the cob to everyone there. Spread some butter on your sandwich and take nibbles in succession. It is impossible to have a better life than this.

Tater Tots

Tater tots are the most underappreciated of all the fried finger snacks that are available.

Crunchy, oily, and completely gratifying, these hash browns folded into little balls are fried to golden perfection and served with a side of ranch dressing. Learn to make your own, it’s a valuable talent to have.

Watermelon

Because a pork sandwich (and its toppings, such as roast beef sandwich toppings) can be fairly substantial, it is necessary to lighten things up. A piece of watermelon says summer to me. Yes, it is a sloppy mess, but so is your lunch.

Roasted Broccoli

You won’t see us recommending broccoli very frequently since it’s not our style, but roasted broccoli is something else completely. Using garlic butter to roast your broccoli, you’ll quickly forget which one is a side dish and which one is the main course!

Baked Beans

We’re having a conversation now. Prepare a large pot of baked beans, to which you’ll add sausages, bacon, onion, garlic, fragrant herbs, and any other seasonings you choose. Make a huge quantity because everyone will want doubles of everything.

Roasted Shishito Peppers

This is a nice complement to your evening spent outside in the fresh air. Grill these tiny devils till they’re crispy and then put them into your mouth. The combination of spicy, flavorful, and a hint of bitterness makes for a really irresistible appetizer.

Making a Pull Pork Sandwich Even Better

Although it is not necessary to discuss the most typical issues that might arise when preparing pulled pork sandwiches, it would be beneficial to do so. Right? You wouldn’t want to have amazing toppings and then have everything else be mediocre, would you? 1. My pulled pork is overcooked and dry. It’s likely that we overcooked the meat. Sauce can be added to the dish to help restore moisture to the dish. Also, make sure you’re using pork shoulder instead of pork loin. Any other cut of beef will be overcooked and dry.

  1. My bun is constantly breaking apart.
  2. Try using potato buns instead of bread since they are denser and will better hold up to the juicy meat.
  3. How much ham do I need to prepare a ham and cheese sandwich?
  4. 4.
  5. While much more study is needed, some people have had success with jackfruit pulp, while others have had mixed results.
  6. Now it’s your turn to take the field.
  7. Are you able to walk the walk?
  8. Let the purists push you down; remember that if something tastes good, it should be included.

Instant Pot Pulled Pork is one of my favorite recipes since it is quick and easy to prepare. In the inner pot of your Instant Pot, combine the sauce, chicken stock, and sugar until well combined and smooth. Afterwards, divide the pork shoulder into four pieces. Season the meat pieces with salt, pepper, paprika, and cinnamon, then massage the mixture all over them. This is a straightforward dry rub, but it imparts just the appropriate amount of flavor to BBQ pulled pork sandwiches without being overbearing.

  1. Afterwards, just cook under pressure for 50 minutes, then wait for another 10 minutes before manually removing the pressure from the cooker.

For the sandwiches:

  • 6-8 Buns
  • Coleslaw
  • 1 small Red Onion
  • Romaine Lettuce
  • 6-8 Buns

For the sauce (optional):

  • To make the BBQ sauce, mix it with the chicken stock and the brown sugar in the inner pot of your instant pot. Cut the meat into four pieces that are similar in appearance. Season the meat pieces with salt, pepper, paprika, and cinnamon in a small bowl, then massage the mixture into the flesh. In a large mixing bowl, combine the chunks and water. Turn them around so that they are completely covered with sauce. Cover the container with the lid and secure it in place. Steam release valve should be set to SEALING and the cooker should be set to HIGH for 50 minutes. Then wait 10 minutes before attempting to physically release the pressure (you may also wait until the pressure naturally decreases before lifting the lid). Pour the liquid into a sauce pan when you’re ready to use it. Pork should be pulled apart with two forks, and some of the sauce (as much as you like) should be poured over it. Make a thorough stir. Serving suggestions: bread, coleslaw, mustard sauce (optional), and any other toppings of your choosing

The total cooking time does not include the time it takes for the pot to come to pressure or the time it takes to release the pressure it has built up. Count on an additional 15-20 minutes
  2. Try toasting the buns before stuffing them with the meat
  3. It’s crucial to chop the meat into four pieces before stuffing them. If you do not follow these instructions, your meat will not be cooked thoroughly.

Pulled pork sandwiches are barely deserving of the term “sandwich”! The sauce seeps into the buns, and if you tried to pick one up with your hands, it would come apart totally. Perhaps if you used a sturdier bread and covered the sandwich in aluminum foil like a burrito, you could eat it like a sandwich instead. We just lay the pulled pork on top of a hamburger bun and eat it with a fork and knife. Packed with flavor and heat, pulled pork is the ideal meal for chilly times (though we enjoy it any time of the year).

A purée of garlic, onion, jalapeo, mustard, vinegar, ketchup and a few more ingredients is the starting point for this dish. The pork can be marinated in the sauce overnight or for a few hours before it is cooked if you have the time and patience to wait. This will allow the pork to absorb even more of the sauce’s flavor as a result of the cooking process. We cook the pork shoulder (affectionately referred to as “butt”) in the marinating sauce for a couple of hours, or until the flesh is fall-apart tender, before serving.

What to Serve With Pulled Pork

Pulled pork can be served on its own or layered between hamburger buns for a sandwich. We like to serve it with coleslaw on the side, either our no-mayo coleslaw or our standard coleslaw, depending on the occasion. You could also serve it with baked beans and collard greens, or prepare a batch of slow cooker mac & cheese to go with it while the pork is cooking.

Adapting This Recipe for a Slow Cooker

The use of a slow cooker to cook pork shoulder is a convenient and hands-off method of preparing pulled pork.

If you want to go that route, cook the pork for 6 to 10 hours on low heat, or until the meat can be readily shredded with a fork, until the meat is tender.

Storing and Keeping Pulled Pork

When it comes to making pulled pork, using a slow cooker makes it simple and hands-free. To do so, cook the pork for 6 to 10 hours on low heat, or until the flesh shreds readily when shredded with a fork.

Perfecting the Pulled Pork Sandwich

All of the goods that appear on this page have been hand-picked by our editors. If you make a purchase after clicking on one of our retail links, we may get a commission. Pulled pork sandwiches are delicious—but only if they are correctly constructed and the meat is cooked to exquisite perfection. Fortunately, we have the ultimate pulled pork sandwich recipe that will take you through all four seasons and beyond. The return of pulled pork sandwiches as the go-to dish for every backyard BBQ, picnic, tailgate, or even lunch on the fly is a given now that summer is in full swing.

Chowhound Personally… I’m not a huge lover of pork, but I really like a good pulled pork sandwich.

When slow-cooked, pulled pork has a naturally sweet and savory taste profile, which can be enhanced even more by the addition of the correct spices, seasonings, sauces, and garnishes, the flavors become even more delicious.

In other words, if you’re thinking about serving pulled pork sandwiches at your next summer get-together, follow these instructions from the top bun to the bottom bun and everything in between, and your sandwiches will turn out perfectly every time!

The Bread

Chowhound Because pulled pork sandwiches, with their combination of meat, sauce, and toppings, tend to be quite tasty, you want a bread that will absorb some of the flavor. When making sliders, I strongly advise using a hamburger bread (or tiny buns if you’re doing sliders). If you want to capitalize on how tender the meat is, you’ll want softer bread, and you’ll want buns that are robust enough to handle a hefty sandwich without ripping or falling apart. Because they are a little bit sweeter than a typical hamburger bread, Kings Hawaiian rolls in particular are ideal for pulled pork sandwiches because the sweetness will draw attention to the complimentary tastes in your sandwich.

It is perfectly OK to provide crunch in your sandwich through other means (e.g., coleslaw! ), but I do not believe that the bread is the appropriate vehicle for doing so.

The Pork

Given that this is a pulled pork sandwich, where would we be if we didn’t have the best possible pulled pork? Tips for Cooking Pulled Pork Pulled Pork: The Complete Guide to Cooking It I’m sure you’ve all heard the adage that the longer you cook pig, the better the end result will be. As an example, there’s an episode of “American Dad” in which one of the guys cooks pork in a slow cooker for 12 days because he’s heard it tastes better if it cooks longer (spoiler alert: everyone got sick). While that could (probably) be a little over the top in real life, there is some truth to this expression!

We have a few of fantastic pulled pork recipes for you to try: OurEasy Slow Cooker Pulled Pork recipeprovides a more traditional taste; ourSpicy Pulled Pork recipeis perfect if you’re looking for something with a bit more kick; and ourBeer-Braised Pulled Pork recipecombines the best of both worlds, plus a splash of beer.

  1. First and foremost, as I already stated, pork is naturally flavored with both sweet and savory qualities.
  2. We also use cinnamon and brown sugar to enhance the sweetness of the meat.
  3. When it comes to the spicy dish, you’d be adding some acid to balance out the natural tastes of the pork.
  4. It’s all about combining tastes and allowing them to work together to their fullest extent before serving.
  5. A nutty brown ale brings out the sweetness and mellows some of the spiciness in the slow-cooked beef, while also imparting a deep, rich flavor to the dish.

The Sauce

By far, the finest choice for a pulled pork sandwich is barbecue sauce, and you can never have too much of it since you want to load on as much flavor as possible. Seriously, put it on both buns, pour it over the meat before you shut the buns, and even dip your sandwich in some sauce on the side to make it more interesting! Because of its sweetness and moderate bite, it complements the sweetness of the pork that we’ve been discussing. Chowhound If you want to buy barbecue sauce from your local store, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.

  • For example, I would absolutely add a little amount of mustard to our basic recipe to give it a subtle bite amid the sweeter tastes, but I would alter it depending on the foundation flavors of your pork dish as well as your personal preferences.
  • Horseradishi is surprisingly nice on a pulled pork sandwich, or a small amount of mayo can go a long way in a variety of dishes.

Also, because barbecue sauce is often made up of a combination of ketchup, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce, you could put any one of those ingredients on your sandwich and the tastes would still come together well. Read more:Curtis Stone’s Easy Steak Sauce is delicious on just about anything.

The Toppings

So far, you’ve created a sandwich with a soft and supple texture, as well as a sweet and savory flavor combination. As far as toppings are concerned, you’ll want to stay away from anything we’ve already done. You’ll need some crunch to balance off the tender meat and soft bun, as well as some acid, heat, or salt (or a combination of the three) to balance out the sweet and savory meat and sauce on the sandwich. To be clear, you will still be able to taste the pork, but your sandwich toppings will serve to enhance the tastes and textures that you already have while also creating a new flavor and texture profile that will be enjoyed along with the meat and sauce in a single bite.

  4. Chowhound All three dishes are crunchy and acidic, and they would provide an excellent balance to the tastes of the pork and sauce.
  5. You might also experiment with pickled red onions.

The Sides

Chowhound Aside from the main course, side dishes are as significant! The guideline I use when organizing a barbeque is that if it’s available at your local deli, chances are it’ll make an excellent side dish for pulled pork. The potato or macaroni salad would be a nice side dish if you already have coleslaw on your sandwich. In addition, you can never go wrong with a bag of chips in your bag. As you already have a lot of barbecue taste in your sandwich, it would be unnecessary to provide barbecue-flavored chips (unless you skipped the sauce, that is).

You’re in for a treat, believe me!

1.Jalapeno Cornbread

Anything involving BBQ will almost certainly go nicely with cornbread. Follow your favorite cornbread recipe and toss in some jalapenos for a little heat to those delightfully soft and moist bits.

You’ll adore the combination of the meaty sandwich and the mild sweetness of corn, as well as the extra spice of jalapenos on top. Additionally, if you’re feeling very experimental, you may incorporate some cheese chunks into the cornbread as well.

2.MacCheese

Macaroni and cheese is a favorite of all ages! Serve this ooey-gooey dish alongside your pulled pork sandwich for a truly decadent supper. When it comes to mac and cheese, you want it to pair nicely with the juicy, succulent pork and the soft bread. To give the mac and cheese more texture, sprinkle on a generous amount of breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese. You’re going to adore it!

3.Corn Pudding

Make corn pudding to go along with your cornbread for a delicious treat! If you use additional components such as milk and sour cream, the result will be more creamier and tangier. To serve with pulled pork, I like to add cheese, sage, rosemary, or even some shredded apples, which give the creamy corn pudding a little additional zing and flavor.

4.Coleslaw

When it comes to coleslaw, you can’t go wrong. Serve a generous serving of barbecue sauce with your pulled pork sandwich, either on the side or inside the sandwich! Having the extra crunch and freshness is quite gratifying. Reduce the amount of mayonnaise you use in your coleslaw to keep it simple and more on the acidic side.

5.Macaroni Salad

The combination of macaroni salad with smoky meat, particularly pulled pork, is one of my favorite dishes. My ideal macaroni salad is a delicious combination of sweet and acidic flavors. Make the mayonnaise using whole eggs to make it rich and creamy. The pickle relish and a variety of additional vegetables, such as carrots, peas, celery, onions, and red peppers, help to balance things out. Would you like to save this recipe? If you provide your your address here, we’ll send you the recipe right to your inbox!

6.Potato Salad

Without potatoes, no list of side dishes would be complete. This time, it’s a potato salad that’s being served. The smoothness of potato salad helps to balance off the smoky barbecue flavors of pulled pork, and it fulfills all of my requirements. Potatoes such as white or Yukon Gold should be used. They have a good hold on their form and contain less starch than other types.

7.Cucumber Salad

Although I believe we can all agree that pulled pork sandwiches are quite delectable, they can also be rather filling. Make your supper a little lighter by serving it with a cucumber salad. This is a simple and quick side dish. All you have to do is combine your thinly sliced cucumbers in a large mixing bowl with the vinegar, the onions, the salt, and the pepper, and set it aside for 10 minutes before serving.

8.Baked Beans

Baked beans are another popular side dish at barbecues, and they’ll go great with your pulled pork sandwich. Old-fashioned beans are the way to go when it comes to cooking them. Ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, dry mustard, and brown sugar are the ingredients I use to make my sauce. You will find it to be a really filling dish!

9.Grilled Corn

Grilled corn on the cob is a crowd-pleasing dish, especially when served alongside pulled pork sandwich sandwiches.

Add your favorite seasonings to the grilled corn to make it more personal. Butter is an absolute requirement! You may also use herbs such as parsley or cilantro, as well as chile flakes or feta cheese, if you want to be fancy. Delicious!

10.Kettle Chips

The classic combination of a sandwich and chips is impossible to go wrong with. Serve your pulled pork sandwich with Kettle chips for a unique twist! Non-stop time savings aside, crispy Kettle chips are the perfect complement to a hearty and savory sandwich. (See recipe below.) My favorite flavors are the sea salt and salt and pepper varieties.

11.French Fries

This is a no-brainer in my opinion. Much pulled pork sandwiches, when served with french fries, taste even better! Whether you want your fries thin and crispy or hand-cut and thick, don’t forget to season them with salt, barbeque powder, or cheese powder before serving. I bet you won’t be able to stop at just one!

12.Okra and Tomatoes

Take a look at this traditional southern combination that’s rarely discussed. okra and tomatoes! Combining these two ingredients will transform pulled pork sandwiches into a substantial and satisfying supper. Only sliced tomatoes and okra, together with garlic, onions, chili powder, and cayenne pepper, are required for this dish. Contrary to popular belief, stewed okra with tomatoes not only tastes good, but it’s also extremely nutritious and low in calories.

13.Deviled Eggs

Deviled eggs are an absolute must-have when serving pulled pork sandwiches at a get-together. Beyond being a charming side dish, deviled eggs are a delicious side dish that can be customized to fit your own preference. Deviled eggs are a classic southern dish made with mayonnaise, mustard, and pickled relish. Keep in mind to garnish with pickles, paprika, and pimento!

14.Hush Puppies

Hush puppies are a delicious finger dish that may be served alongside pulled pork sandwiches. The flavor of these delightful small pieces will appeal to you whether served as an appetizer or a side dish. These deep-fried cornmeal balls are quite addicting, especially if you have a sweet tooth. When combined with your delicious pulled pork, they provide the ideal crunch. Make your hush puppies with buttermilk, and they’ll be a favorite with everyone!

15.Brownies

Are you planning a summer cookout with your friends? Finish your dinner with a delicious batch of brownies! Every single time I make brownies, they are a huge hit with my family and friends. It’s impossible not to like these fudgy, chocolaty tiny squares! Brownies are a terrific way to round off a meal since they are moist on the inside and have a deliciously crackly top.

16.Banana Pudding

Despite the fact that you’ll be stuffed after devouring that pulled pork sandwich, spare some room for the delicious and creamy banana pudding. After a hearty lunch, a refreshing dessert is usually a nice choice, and this banana pudding will satisfy your sweet taste no matter what the occasion. Pour a little bourbon or rum into your pudding and coat it with a peanut butter glaze to take it to the next level!

17.Peach Cobbler

My favorite southern dish, peach cobbler, is at the top of my list whenever I think about it!

I never pass up the opportunity to create this delectable treat, which is especially true when peaches are available. An indulgent peach cobbler topped with a scoop or two of vanilla ice cream never fails to satisfy.

Pulled Pork Recipe (Slow Cooker Method)

A goodPulled Pork dish is one of those comfortable meals that everyone should have in their recipe book. This is the pulled pork recipe that I’ve been making for years. Enjoy! I love how it’s extremely simple to make while yet being incredibly tasty!

Slow Cooker Pulled Pork Recipe

So what is it about this pulled pork dish that makes it my favorite?

  • Roasted beef with a simple homemade dry rub (seasoning combination that is spread all over the meat)
  • 8 hours of cooking time in a somewhat sweet, acidic, and smoky broth combination
  • The roast is soaked and cooked in this mixture. I like that it is so tender because it has been cooked in the slow cooker
  • And I like the convenience of using store-bought barbeque sauce in this recipe, which makes it more manageable on hectic days (although you are welcome to use homemade if you have some on hand)

Afterwards, it’s not complete for me unless it’s served with coleslaw. Isn’t it true that the two go hand in hand? My go-to coleslaw for pulled pork sandwiches is this basic recipeHERE, but I like to dress it up with blue cheese crumbles when serving it with pulled pork sandwiches. It takes it to the next level.

Easy Pulled Pork Ingredients

To make the pulled pork seasoning, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup salt and 1 tablespoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons paprika
  • 1/2 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (or a little more if you want it hotter)
  • 1 tbsp cayenne pepper (or a little more if you like it spicier)

You’ll need the following ingredients for the roast and broth:

  • 3 cups apple juice
  • 2/3 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tablespoon liquid smoke
  • 1 1/4 cups BBQ sauce (I prefer Bullseye)
  • 4 pound boneless pork shoulder roast (also known as Boston Butt roast)

If you want to prepare a barbecue pork sandwich, don’t forget about the buns and coleslaw!

How to Make Pulled Pork in the Slow Cooker

  • In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the salt, pepper, brown sugar, paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper until well combined
  • Set aside. Place the roast in a baking dish and coat the entire roast with the dry rub mixture, pushing the mixture into the meat with your fingers. Cover the roast with plastic wrap and set it aside in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight. Combine the apple juice, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and liquid smoke in a medium mixing bowl. Cook in a slow cooker with a few tablespoons of the apple juice mixture poured over the top of the roast and the rest liquid poured on the side of the roast (I do this to ensure that all of the dry rub isn’t washed away) Place all ingredients in a slow cooker and simmer on low heat for 8–10 hours.
  • Take the meat out of the slow cooker and shred it (leave broth in slow cooker). Continue to simmer on low for 10 – 20 minutes more after returning the shredded pork to the slow cooker (in the broth). In a large mixing bowl, pour in the barbecue sauce and whisk
  • Drain most of the liquid from the pork (I leave about 1/2 cup). To create pulled pork sandwiches, place the pulled pork in buns and top with coleslaw.

What’s the Best Pork for Pulled Pork?

If you want tasty, tender results, stick with pork shoulder (also known as Boston butt).

Can I Use a Bone-In Pork Roast?

A bone-in roast works well in this situation as well. To compensate for the weight of the bone, go for one that weighs around 4.5 pounds.

Can I Make Pulled Pork in an Instant Pot?

In an Instant Pot, cook for 75 minutes on high pressure or manual mode to prepare this simple pulled pork meal with no effort.

How to Reheat Pulled Pork

When warming leftover pulled pork, I recommend using the oven or a covered pan on low heat. It’s important to reheat the pulled pork with some of its liquids, else it would become dry and tasteless.

Can You Freeze Pulled Pork?

That’s right, this slow cooker pulled pork freezes very well. Place it in a freezer bag with some of the fluids to keep it fresh. Place the frozen food in your refrigerator overnight to defrost.

Tips for the Best Pulled Pork

  • Before you start cooking, season with salt and pepper to taste. The dry rub used in this recipe is delicious and does not require 101 ingredients
  • It is then simmered in a savory broth. During the extended cooking time, the roast will soak up the flavors of the broth (which is based on apple juice and apple cider vinegar in this case)
  • Cook on a low heat for a long period of time. The slow cooker method for pulled pork is one of my favorites since it produces extremely tender shredded pork
  • Don’t forget to include the sauce. It’s all about the barbecue sauce when it comes to pulled pork. Add coleslaw to the mix for texture, freshness, and color. I recommend a smoky, rich sauce that isn’t overly sweet. It makes the sandwich appear much more appetizing as a result.
