What to Serve with a Cuban Sandwich

The Cuban sandwich, or as I like to refer to it, The Next Level Ham and Cheese, is a classic American sandwich. This famous sandwich is constructed with ham, Swiss cheese, pork that has been roasted to perfection, pickles, and mustard, all of which are wrapped in a Cuban bread bun. It’s certain that the Cubano has earned a place on the list of the world’s most popular sandwiches. and for good cause! It’s just delectable. Would you like to save this recipe? 1.Black Beans

Let’s start with something that’s been done before, shall we? In Cuban cuisine, black beans are a major ingredient. Prepared using peppers, onions, and garlic as the primary ingredients, this side dish is sure to please. Add a squeeze of lime juice for some extra acidity, and you’ve got yourself a supper that’s not only delicious, but also faithful to its origins as well.

2.Cuban-Style Yuca

Here’s another one that adheres to the overall idea. Making yuca in the Cuban way is a simple process. Simply boil it and combine it with a sautéed combination of olive oil, onion, garlic, and lemon juice to create a typical Cuban side dish. Yoca is also wonderful when fried, if you like something with a little extra crunch to your meal. Simply use the same ingredients as before!

3.Sweet Potato

If you serve sweet potatoes with your Cuban sandwich, they are guaranteed to be a hit. They can be baked, fried, or steamed. I love to bake them until they’re just a tad crunchy on the exterior in order to balance out the textures of the ingredients. You can’t go wrong with this tasty and nutritious side dish, which is a good source of potassium and vitamin C.

4. Fried Pickles

Pickles will be found on the majority of Cuban sandwiches, so why not make them a side dish rather than a sandwich? Pickles that have been fried and coated with a crunchy coating can give your sandwich an extra dose of flavor. Extra crispy, extra wonderful, and even better with a dollop of ranch dressing on top of it all! Make your own Cuban sandwiches at home, and this one with pickled onions and tomatoes is absolutely worth trying.

5. Fruit

It is not necessary for your Cuban sandwich to be entirely flavorful. Why not serve it with a little bit sweet as an accompaniment? A lovely, refreshing fruit dish will be the ideal complement to your Cuban lunch. I prefer to use something extra zesty, such as pineapples, oranges, or blueberries, to make the dish more interesting. If you’re feeling very indulgent, you can also add some cream and turn it into a fruit salad.

6. Tomato Soup

With a cup of tomato soup, you may transform your Cuban sandwich into a warm and comforting lunch.

With the acidity of the tomato, the richness of the sandwich will be balanced out, and you can even use it as a dip! On a rainy day, what could be better than a gooey meaty sandwich and a steaming cup of soup? Count me in on this!

7. French Fries

Potato. The all-powerful deity of all sides! Because you can never go wrong with a grilled cheese sandwich and a side of french fries, I had to include it on the list. Would you like to save this recipe? If you provide your your address here, we’ll send you the recipe right to your inbox! There’s something for everyone with this pairing, whether you want tiny crispy strips or thick and hand-cut slices that are still tender in the centre. Despite the fact that it is not the healthiest option, it is undoubtedly the most tasty!

8. Veggies with Hummus

I can’t express how much I like hummus enough. It’s earthy and creamy and amazing, and I’d eat it with anything, including a Cuban sandwich, if the opportunity presented itself. Combine it with veggies such as broccoli, carrots, or celery, and you’ve got a winning combination! It’s also a delicious and easy way to get your daily serving of vegetables in without feeling guilty.

9. Corn

What about corn on the cob? Please accept my request. What about corn kernels? Please accept my request. Is corn consumed in any manner at all? Please accept my request. Because, after all, who doesn’t enjoy corn? I propose corn on the cob with butter, cilantro, sea salt, and Parmesan cheese as a side dish for your Cuban sandwich! This is delicious on its alone, but served with a sandwich, it makes for a fantastic mix of flavors.

10. Fried Plantain

In addition to your savory sandwich, fried plantains can satisfy any cravings you may have for something slightly sweet to go with it. Take a slice of your Cuban sandwich and combine it with the starchy, sweet plantain to get that extra layer of taste you crave. Additionally, you will receive your daily potassium need!

11. Cajun Chips

Chips are a terrific accompaniment to any sandwich, but for this particular sandwich, I want my chips to be very thin and super crispy, with a hint of flavor. The salty, smokey taste of Cajun seasoning combined with a pinch of spice will properly balance off the richness of your Cuban sandwich while also adding some additional texture. If Cajun food isn’t your thing, there’s also barbecue and cheddar available.

12. Coleslaw

Cabbage prepared my way is my fave! To accompany any sandwich, but especially a Cuban sandwich, a decent coleslaw is definitely one of my favorite things to have on hand. To cut through the richness of the cheese and ham, I prefer to use a little less mayonnaise and a little more vinaigrette in my sandwich to give it a little more punch of flavor. Using less mayonnaise will also help to keep the cabbage crisper, which will add more texture to the dish. Yummy!

13. Salad

Last but not the least is a nice fresh salad to complement your Cuban sandwich. Some greens and a little extra citrusy flavor like oranges, mangoes, or a vinaigrette dressing will bring acidity to your sandwich. If you want to stick to the cuban theme, there are many elements from this list you can add to your salad like black beans, sweet plantain, and corn.

14. What’s for Dessert?

Now that you’ve prepared all of these delectable side dishes to accompany your Cuban sandwich, why not go all out and indulge in some dessert as well?

After this lunch, a flan is the best way to finish it off. Even better, a flan from Cuba! When compared to other types of flan, it is firmer and denser, and the caramel on top is somewhat darker and richer with just the proper amount of bight. A wonderful way to bring the palate to a close!

Cuban Sandwich Recipe

The ultimate Cuban sandwich recipe, stuffed with ham, cheese, roasted pork, and pickles, is presented here. In addition to being delicious and filling, these sandwiches are also really simple to make! In addition to the Monte Cristo, bahn mi, and these crispy and cheesy Cuban sandwiches, I also enjoy recreating my favorite restaurant style sandwich dishes. I absolutely adore Cuban sandwiches, and whenever I see them on a restaurant’s menu, I can’t help but order one right away. It’s impossible to beat the combo of meats and cheeses here!

How to make a Cuban sandwich

The base of this dish is a pork tenderloin that has been marinated in a mixture of olive oil, citrus juices, herbs, and spices for many hours. Perfectly grilled pork is finely sliced after it has been cooked to perfection. Using a split loaf of Cuban bread, arrange layers of Swiss cheese, ham, pork tenderloin, pickles, and mustard on top of each other to form a sandwich. They are grilled and pressed, which results in a very crispy outside and a gooey melting inside, as shown in the photos.

Tips for the best Cuban sandwich

  • Cook your pork until it reaches 145 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure that it remains soft and juicy. It is possible to use a meat thermometer to keep an eye on the temperature of the meat as it is being cooked
  • In Cuban sandwiches, braised pork shoulder is frequently used as a filling. Tenderloin is my preferred cut of meat since it cooks considerably more quickly. Make sure to use a high-quality deli-sliced ham to achieve the best results. In this recipe, I use applewood smoked ham from the deli counter at my local grocery store
  • You may use pickles split lengthwise or pickle chips, depending upon what you have on hand. If you like, you may use bread & butter pickles in place of the dill pickles if you choose. When it comes to preparing this sandwich, there are a few distinct options. You may use a panini press, an indoor grill pan, or a skillet to make this sandwich. Remember to keep a heavy pan nearby in case you need to press the sandwich flat. I cook using a cast-iron skillet.

What kind of bread do you use for a Cuban sandwich?

When making a traditional Cuban sandwich, Cuban bread is used, which is often a tall, crusty white loaf of bread that contains a tiny amount of fat, such as lard. Because Cuban bread can be difficult to come by in some locations, I’ve discovered that a long French or Italian loaf of bread from the grocery bakery works just as well.

What goes with a Cuban sandwich?

When it comes to pairing a Cuban sandwich with a side dish, the options are endless! My favorite snacks are potato chips, french fries, and a light salad such as a cucumber or tomato salad, among other things. Because it’s very excellent, there’s a reason why this sandwich is so popular. As a matter of fact, this may well be my favorite sandwich of all time.

1 – Creamy Macaroni Salad

The fact that it can be served at barbecues and picnics makes it a summertime favorite side dish. Additionally, it’s a refreshing cold side dish to serve in the winter when you need something warm but yet want to keep your menu light. You may use any type of pasta for this dish, but we prefer macaroni since it is the most versatile. You can also use shells or other little forms for this recipe, which takes only 30 minutes to put together and can be served immediately. Mayonnaise is the primary ingredient in this creamy macaroni salad, which helps to keep it wet and rich in flavor.

The end product is a gooey, creamy, and delightful side dish that can be utilized to complement any sandwich or entrée’s flavor profile.

2 – Tater Tots

This is a very basic, yet very popular, side dish that can be served with almost anything and is quite versatile. You may offer them with Cuban sandwiches since they will provide your visitors with a crisp texture that will contrast with the softness of the cheese and other components in the sandwich. Best of all, you don’t have to spend much time in the kitchen to prepare this delicious side dish, which makes it ideal for individuals who are just starting started in the kitchen or for those who don’t have a lot of free time.

3 – Potato Salad

This is another alternative that might be fantastic for barbecues and picnics, similar to the creamy macaroni salad. This meal, on the other hand, is a little richer and heavier than the macaroni salad, therefore we recommend serving it during the winter months when you need something to warm up your visitors. A safe side dish to serve because it is virtually sure to pair well with any entrée’, making it a go-to option for when your menu appears to be lacking in creativity. If you’re making a potato salad, the beautiful thing about it is that you can make it as basic or as complex as you like depending on whether you want to incorporate eggs, veggies, and other ingredients.

4 – Tortilla Chips and Salsa

This is our favorite side dish since it is super simple to prepare and can be made with just about anything you have in your cupboard. All you need is a package of tortilla chips or nachos and a jar of store-bought salsa to complete the meal. What’s nice about this side dish is that you can make it spicy or mild according on your own inclination, making it an excellent alternative for a variety of tastes. • There were no modifications made to the recipe.
  • It was because of the tastiest sandwich that has ever come out of my kitchen that I was inspired to create that lovely Cuban bread recipe.
  • When we visited, we fell in love with their original Cubano sandwich, and I started out on a journey to recreate the sandwich in my own kitchen.
  • The recipe that we used comes from the booklet “Three Guys From Miami Cook Cuban” by “The Three Guys” from Miami, and it is adapted from their website.

I’m only the cook, so if you’re really concerned about the difference, take it up with the professionals. During this time, you’ll need to prepare the bread, which will be used to construct the tastiest Cuban Sandwich ever.

What is the difference between a Cuban sandwich and a Medianoche?

AMedianoche is a dish made of of roast pig, ham, mustard, Swiss cheese, and pickled vegetables. In many ways, it’s a relative of the Cuban sandwich. As opposed to Cuban bread, which is crustier and more dense, a medianoche is soft and sweet egg dough bread comparable to Challah. We took advantage of the situation and prepared our Cuban sandwich on Medianoche bread. It comes highly recommended by me! Cuban bread is a plain white bread that is similar to French bread and Italian bread in appearance.

How to Make a Cuban Sandwich

  • Cuban Roast Pork – marinated pork shoulder or butt roast cooked from ourMedianoche recipe
  • Bread rolls made from ourMedianoche recipe. Although a pork tenderloin might be substituted, we like the texture of the roast. It is also less lean, which makes it more tasty. Thinly sliced ham, Swiss cheese, dill pickles, and mustard – acidic yellow mustard is typical, but we put a twist on it with our version. For further information, refer to the recipe card.

NOTE: Although you only need 1 pound of pork for 4 sandwiches, we baked the entire pig roast and then frozen the remaining pork for a future supper, resulting in a great no-fuss meal when we are too busy to cook or simply don’t feel like cooking.

Mojo Pork Recipe

We’re talking about mojo pork, which is the pork that’s put on our sandwich. It’s a marinated pork buttocks recipe (shoulder). Step 1: Using a mortar and pestle or a food processor, mash the garlic, salt, and peppercorns into a paste, including the olive oil. Preparing the “sour orange juice,” which is a blend of orange juice, lemon juice, and lime juice, is the second step. Combine the sour orange juice, garlic paste, onion, and oregano in a large mixing bowl. Allow 30 minutes for the mixture to rest.

  1. As soon as you remove the oil from the heat, rapidly AND CAREFULLY whisk in the garlic-orange juice combination until well combined.
  2. Placing the pig butt in a roaster and piercing the pork butt numerous times with a big fork or knife is the fourth step.
  3. Refrigerate the pan for 2 to 3 hours after it has been covered.
  4. After 20 minutes, remove the pork from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes.
  5. It takes around 2 hours and 20 minutes to complete this task.
  6. Allow for a 10-minute resting period.

How to assemble this Miami Cuban Sandwich

There’s only one way to assemble this sandwich, and it’s delicious! There is only one way to assemble this sandwich, thanks to “The Three Guys” from Miami State. Place the pickles, roasted pork, ham, and cheese on buttered Medianoche bread, in that order, on top of the buttered bread. Mustard is not required. We used Dijon mustard and a small amount of sriracha sauce in our recipe. It’s incredible to see the difference.

You May Need:

  • Panini Press – This is the edition that I have in my possession. The fact that the grates can be flipped over and used as a griddle, as well as the fact that they can be easily removed for cleaning, are both appealing.
  • You may also use a heavy skillet, such as cast iron, or a grill pan as a sandwich press, or a brick wrapped with aluminum foil
  • However, this is not recommended.

An alternative name for this spatula is “fish spatula.” I use mine for just about everything. It has essentially taken the place of my turner spatula.

Cut the sandwich in half diagonally and serve it right away

One pound of meat may be used to make four sandwiches. I freeze what I don’t use so that we may eat Cubanos on a regular basis without having to roast the pig every single time.
