Funeral Sandwiches (Hot Ham and Cheese Sliders

It is possible that this content contains affiliate links. For further information, please check my fullDisclosure Policy. Funeral Sandwiches are delectable ham and cheese sliders that can be served as a quick appetizer recipe or as a family-friendly main course dish. There’s nothing sad about these small slider sandwiches since they’re filled with warm salty ham, crunchy Swiss cheese, and drizzled with a zesty Dijon butter sauce! These are some of my favorite dishes to prepare throughout the harvest and planting seasons.

Why are they called funeral sandwiches?

These delectable ham and cheese sliders may be served as a quick appetizer recipe or as a hearty family dinner. As a result, how does something so delectable come to be known as funeral sandwiches? Good question, but if you’ve ever baked funeral potatoes, you’re probably already nodding your head in agreement with my answer. Funeral sandwiches topped with Dijon mustard are well-known for being served during church gatherings and funeral services. According to what I’ve heard, they’re also a southern custom!

We cook them because they are a crowd-pleasing meal that is also quite simple to prepare.

Sadly, it doesn’t appear to happen as frequently these days, but “back in the day,” my grandmother and mother would cook potluck meals for funerals at our local church.

Funeral sandwiches would frequently be served during church luncheons, notably in the southern United States.

Funeral Sandwich Ingredients

Funeral Sandwiches are created with very basic ingredients, such as normal Hawaiian buns, and are served cold. Creamy Swiss cheese and salty ham are layered on top of the rolls, which are then drizzled with a sour dijon butter combination. Afterwards, they’re baked into delectable mini-sandwiches of delight. Some of the butter sauce is absorbed by the bottom of the pan. The centre is warm and melty, while the top half has just the proper amount of seasoning. Delicious! For field dinners or for ideas for families on the run, this dish (and pretty much every slider recipe ever!) is one of my top suggestions.

How to Make Funeral Sandwiches for Later:

Before I teach you how to make funeral sandwiches for later, let me first say that this is one of the BEST culinary presents you could ever give someone. People will adore you as a result of it. Yes, this is true! If you serve them in a disposable dish, your guests will be even more grateful to you because they will not have to worry about returning your casserole dish. It’s a fantastic way to make the recipient’s life a little bit simpler, don’t you think? Okay, now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s go to work on the funeral rolls.

Place your ham and cheese on top of the sliced ham.

Sandwiches should be topped with the bun toppers. Prepare the butter mixes and spread them over the tops of the sandwiches to finish them off. Wrap the dish with plastic wrap and then foil. Don’t forget to add baking instructions when you’re presenting them as a food gift!

Funeral Slider Tips:

  • If you don’t have Dijon, you may use yellow mustard. When cutting things into parts, a serrated knife is the most effective tool. If you have leftover ham from Easter or other occasions, this is a fantastic way to use it up. If you don’t care for Swiss cheese, use another type.

What to serve with Funeral Sandwiches

  • No-Mayo Potato Salad, Low-Carb Deviled Eggs, and Apple Slab Pie are among the dishes on the menu.

Other mini slider sandwiches:

  • Recipes for pull-apart sliders include baked Italian sliders, pulled pork sliders, chicken bacon ranch sliders, and many more.

Preparation time: 5 minutes Preparation time: 12 minutes Time allotted: 17 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups shredded Swiss cheese
  • 1 pound deli ham pieces
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 12 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 package sweet dinner rolls (Hawaiian rolls)
  • 1 cup shredded deli ham.

Instructions

  1. Using a sharp knife, cut the entire package of rolls in half horizontally. Place the bottom half of a 9×9 ovenproof baking dish on a baking sheet. Over the bottom half, arrange a layer of ham and Swiss cheese. Using a medium-sized bowl, mix together the dijon mustard, butter, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Replace the tops of the rolls. Pour the sauce over the rolls, only covering the tops of the rolls. Allow for 10 minutes of resting time after covering with foil. Bake for 10 minutes at 350 degrees, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Remove the cover and cook for a further 2 minutes, or until the tops are slightly browned and crisp. Warm or at room temperature are both acceptable serving temperatures.

Notes

If you don’t have Dijon mustard, you may use yellow mustard. When cutting them into parts, a serrated knife is the ideal tool to use. Make use of any leftover ham from Easter or other special occasions with this recipe!

Looking for suggestions for sides to serve with the funeral sandwiches/ham sliders?May also have roast beef and cheddar along with them for a bit of variety. Please keep in mind that the people I would be serving it to do not eat healthy, are meat and potato type people with lots of gravy, etc.Veggies for them are a can of corn or can of green beans. They do like green bean bundles, but we just had those at Thanksgiving.I will most likely make a layered salad to have some sort of fresh veggies with it and may do a veggie/dip plate as well. Was thinking of funeral potatoes/crack potatoes (ooey gooey cheesy casserole loaded with fat/calories and goodness).Thought about a corn casserole put that is just more ooey gooey cheesy goodness.Thanks.

When I serve them, I do finger foods to go with them. So for your crowd I would say serve it with some chips and dip, veggie tray and other easy prep, easy eat foods.

I make a version of these when I make ham.www.marthastewart.com/338792/potatoes-annaI do mine a little differently.I use a casserole to layer my potatoes and I sprinkle finely diced onion on each layer along with a little paprika. Then I just bake in the oven and spoon them out rather then trying to turn it out on a plate.

How about oven fries? They are easy and not too unhealthy.Cut up some potatoes and drizzle over some olive oil. More oil will give you some crispy edges, like they were fried. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and bake on a baking sheet at 350 for 45-60 minutes. (Cooking time will vary with how many potatoes are on the baking sheet)

My first thought was the hashbrown casserole dish, whatever you want to call them.Or things like potato and macaroni salad. Those seem to always go good with ham sandwiches.Or baked beans, those would work too.Cupcakes, cobblers, apple crisp type desserts?

Southern Belle Funeral Sandwiches

Funeral sandwiches are one of my favorite regional delicacies from the southern United States. Sautéed ham and Swiss cheese, topped with a tart dijon brown sugar butter sauce, are baked in airy Hawaiian rolls. Originally published as: Their brown sugar dijon caramelized crust is essentially an enhanced version of traditional ham and cheese sliders. They are really delicious!

Funeral Sandwiches

I went to an oyster party at the home of one of my oldest friends during the holidays, which I quite enjoyed. Nick Pilato is his name, and we’ve been great friends since sixth grade. But he’s also the guy who introduced me to wonderful music, which is something else I admire about him. His parents, on the other hand, showed me a plethora of new things. His father, who was born and raised in Rome, was the first person to serve me bucatini all’amatriciana. And his mother, a genuine southern belle from Alabama, introduced me to cheesy olive balls and these delectable funeral sandwiches, among other things.

  1. It’s one of my favorite holiday traditions since it brings back so many memories for me!
  2. His mother, on the other hand, always has her famous funeral sandwiches on hand.
  3. In other words, what are funeral sandwiches?
  4. When the sauce is baked, it caramelizes, resulting in a sweet and tangy crust that is out of this world delicious.
  5. They’re a little soggy and a little crunchy, but they’re so incredibly addictive that you can’t stop at just one.
  6. They are referred to as such because they were previously used for church spreads at funerals, thus the name.
  7. This recipe, on the other hand, requires only one hour of soaking time.
  8. Because of their adaptability, the funearl rolls may be prepared at the last minute or a day ahead of time, which is ideal for party preparation.

What to pair them with

Funeral sandwiches are also a terrific way to use up any leftovers from my crock pot brown sugar pineapple ham recipe. Serving them with some of this ideal white cheddar mac and cheese, instant pot black eyed peas, or this southern pimento cheese potato salad are all excellent options for side dishes.

These Cream Cheese Sausage Balls, these Cajun Deviled Eggs, and this dry beef cheese ball are all great old-school appetizer ideas to try. You may also try this English Ploughmans Sandwich or this Eggslut Breakfast Sandwich if you’re looking for another delicious ham sandwich recipe.

How to make Ham and Cheese Sliders with Brown Sugar Dijon Glaze

Funeral sandwiches are quite simple to make! The only thing you need to consider is how much time you have on your hands at the moment. It is recommended that you marinate the meat for at least one hour if you are in a hurry with this dish. Having more time is always preferable. Alternatively, you may soak them overnight for the same delectable effects. To begin, combine the melted butter, brown sugar, dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce in a large mixing bowl. Next, butter a baking dish and pour about 3-4 tbsp of the sauce mixture into the bottom of the pan – just enough to coat the bottom of the pan – to finish baking.

  1. Place the bottom half of each bun on a baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes.
  2. Place the upper half of the buns on top and sprinkle the leftover brown sugar dijon sauce over the top of the buns to finish.
  3. Optional poppy seeds should be sprinkled on top at this point if you choose to make use of them.
  4. When you’re ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and remove the buns from their packaging.
  5. They will be crispy on the outside and somewhat mushy on the inside, in the greatest manner conceivable!

I’m going to share 15 super-easy side dishes that will turn your sliders into a whole dinner in no time. Allow yourself to match your ham and cheese sliders with this delectable fare for the most delectable feast ever!

1.Grilled Pineapple

Pair your cheesy, meaty sliders with a sweet and refreshing fruit to complete the meal! Grilled pineapple is a dish that will never go wrong. Pineapples are already delicious in their natural state, being sweet, juicy, and flavorful. But when you put them on the grill for a few minutes, oh my goodness, they are really delicious. The change it creates is nothing short of amazing.

2.Potato Casserole

A successful combo is usually sandwiches and potatoes since they’re both really rich and cheesy at the same time! Potato casserole is stuffed with hash browns, cornflakes, and plenty of cheese to satisfy any appetite. It’s also quite simple to put together. You just combine all of the ingredients in a baking pan, bake them, and you’re done.

3.Hash Brown Casserole

Because you can never have too much cheese, we’ve created ham and cheese sliders and a hash brown dish. When it comes to cheese, if you are anything like me, you will like this combo. Hash brown casserole is made up of shredded potatoes that have been infused with seasonings and topped with cheese. In a nutshell, cheese can be found everywhere!

4.Pineapple Casserole

Would you like to save this recipe? If you provide your your address here, we’ll send you the recipe right to your inbox! This is a win-win situation!

5.Potato Salad

When it comes to making ham and cheese sliders, there’s nothing better than trying something new. There is nothing you will ever need in this pineapple casserole! Trying to remember where you put that recipe? If you provide your email address here, we’ll give you the recipe right away! As you may assume, pineapple is included in this dish along with butter crackers and cheddar cheese. While it may not make sense to you right now, you will understand once you have done it. This casserole is both a side dish and a dessert in one.

Win-win for all parties involved.

6.Italian Pasta Salad

It is possible to make a very full and nutritious side dish that goes well with sliders by using pasta salad from Italy. When you hear the term “salad,” the first thing that comes to mind is greens and vegetables, which may seem dull and monotonous. Pasta salad, on the other hand, is anything from monotonous. Pasta salad is a delicious dish that is packed with pasta, vegetables, cheese, nuts, meats, and your choice of dressing. It’s the perfect side dish for the summer because it’s vibrant and refreshing!

7.Chili

Soup and sandwiches go together like peanut butter and jelly.

Chili, on the other hand, is my particular favorite for ham and cheese sliders! This combination is the epitome of comfort food. Who can say no to this irresistible combination of creamy, cheesy, and hearty?

8.ChipsDip

When it comes to soup and sandwiches, nothing beats it. My personal favorite filling for ham and cheese sliders, though, is chili! These two dishes are the epitome of comfort cuisine. Who can say no to this irresistible combination of creamy, cheesy, and hearty goodness.

9.Veggie Tray

Veggie crudites are a great option for those looking to eat healthy. A crudites plate, which is filled with crisp vegetables and a tangy or creamy dip, is the quickest (and most nutritious) side dish to serve alongside ham and cheese sliders. Carrots, celery, cucumber, bell peppers, cauliflower, and broccoli are just a few of the vegetables available. Imagine the flavor, the crunch, and the color of this dish!

10.MacCheese

Macaroni and cheese is described best by the phrases creamy, cheesy, delectable, and straightforward. It may be ranked tenth on this list, but it is unquestionably the number one song in my heart. Macaroni and cheese is the great side dish for any meal. Nothing goes wrong with this ultra-savory side dish, no matter what you’re serving it with. To be sure, you’re serving your cheese sandwich with another cheesy meal. But it’s simply so darn fantastic that I’m confident that no one will object!

11.Macaroni Salad

If you’re serving ham and cheese sliders to a large group of people, macaroni salad is the perfect side dish to serve with them. Not only is it delicious and filling, but it is also really simple to prepare! The combo of macaroni, mayonnaise, and mustard is one of my favorites. When you combine those three ingredients in a single dish, something wonderful happens. Because it’s best served cold, you may even prepare it ahead of time and serve it on the day of your party or celebration.

12.Deviled Eggs

Although the name may not sound appealing, these treats are very delicious! Deviled eggs are amazingly creamy, delicious, and simple to prepare! Aside from the eggs, you’ll only need mayonnaise, mustard, vinegar, salt, and pepper to make this dish. How can something so heinous be so straightforward?

13.Coleslaw

Coleslaw is a fantastic side dish for sliders since it is crisp, refreshing, and brightly colored. Shredded cabbage, carrots, and a creamy, tangy vinaigrette make up this salad. Wow. Simply said, the combination of flavors and textures is pure love. Apple slices may be added to your coleslaw to give it a sense of sweetness.

14.Fruit Salad

Fruit salad is the perfect complement to your thick and hefty sliders if you want something sweet and refreshing to go with them. It may be simple, but it certainly strikes the point. What kinds of fruits should you include in your salad? There are no incorrect choices when it comes to fruit: grapes, watermelon, berries, and kiwi are just a few examples. Simply select the combinations that you like! The more diversity and color there is, the better it is! Alternatively, you may cover the fruit in plain Greek yogurt for a tart contrast, or you can use flavored Greek yogurt.

15.Apple Crisp

Finally, for dessert, nothing pairs better with ham and cheese sliders than a crisp made with apples that are both sweet and sour.

When it comes to the ingredients, apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and butter, they are already quite great. Then you top it with a crumble that is both sweet and buttery. I mean, how amazing is that?!

Funeral Sandwiches Recipe Directions:

  1. To begin, preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. You will need a rectangular baking dish for this. Ideally, a 7-by-10-inch baking dish that is at least 3 inches deep
  2. Take the Hawaiian sweet rolls out of their container and cut them in half horizontally. Using a sharp knife, separate all of the rolls separately and place the bottom piece of the rolls in the baking dish
  3. Equally layer each roll with ham and cheese. On average, I put one or two slices of ham on each of my sandwiches. In addition, I like to fold one piece of cheese in half for each sandwich I make. I like to make them filling and filling. I really enjoy using Swiss cheese, although Provolone is also a favorite of mine. A medium-sized mixing bowl is ideal for combining the melted butter, Worcestershire sauce (or other seasonings), Dijon mustard, brown sugar, onion powder, and any optional chopped onions
  4. Roll up each sandwich from top to bottom, then use a pastry brush to evenly coat each sandwich with the sauce you just produced. I make sure to leave enough sauce to flow down the edges of each individual sandwich
  5. The old recipe would instruct you to cover this dish with plastic wrap or tin foil and place it in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours. Who has the luxury of time for that? If you do, that’s fantastic, but if you don’t, that’s perfectly OK as well. I’ve put these sandwiches in the oven soon after spreading the sauce on top of them, and to be honest, I don’t notice much of a change in taste or texture. I wanted to make sure to highlight this since it’s a fantastic dish to prepare ahead of time without having to worry about your sandwiches being soggy. Alternatively, you may prepare them in advance and bake them right before serving. Bake the rolls for about 20 minutes, uncovered, and serve them while still warm.

They’re the finest sandwiches I’ve ever had, I promise! You can print out this amazing recipe right here!

Funeral Rolls

Funeral Rollstaste is really wonderful! They are a simple appetizer dish to prepare, and believe me when I say they are nothing to be ashamed of. Several years ago, while working as a substitute teacher at North Laurel High School in London, Kentucky, I was exposed to these delectableFuneral Sandwiches. These were prepared by a coworker for a teachers’ meeting, and they were a huge hit with everyone! She said that they are referred to as Funeral Rolls because they were typically produced for funeral “layouts” in the southern United States.

  1. They are quite simple to make, and one of the things I appreciate about them is that they can be prepared ahead of time and baked when you are ready.
  2. They would also make a fantastic snack for a football game.
  3. Simply cut each roll in half lengthwise and set the bottom halves of each roll on the bottom of a 9×13 baking dish to bake.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine the melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, brown sugar, and onion powder until well combined.
  5. Cover with plastic wrap and marinate for 4-24 hours.
  6. This is one of the reasons why I like this recipe so much: you can make them ahead of time and bake them later.

Please believe me when I say that once you sample Funeral Rolls, you will never go back. This is the recipe that I am most frequently asked to make by friends and family. In any case, there is nothing to be sad about. It happens to be my husband’s favorite appetizer.

  • 14teaspoononion powder
  • 1bottleoptional – poppy seeds
  • 1packageSwiss or Provolone Cheese
  • 12 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • Rolls should be cut in half lengthwise and the bottom halves should be placed on the bottom of a baking pan. My preferred method is to use a bread knife and cut the entire box at once. Place the ham and cheese on top of the bottom half of the buns, and then close the rolls up. Cover the ham and cheese with the tops of the rolls. In a small mixing dish, combine the following ingredients: Combine the melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, brown sugar, and onion powder in a large mixing bowl. Sauce should be poured over the sandwiches. Cover and set aside for 4-24 hours to marinate. Personally, I prefer to do mine overnight. Preheat the oven to 350°F when you’re ready to bake. Toss the top of the buns with poppy seeds and bake for 15 minutes uncovered, or until the cheese is melted and the buns are golden brown.
