When served with a ham sandwich, it transforms into a genuinely spectacular feast.

3. Clam Chowder

Rather than tomato soup, potato soup is a more filling alternative to tomato soup. You’ll get something filling when you offer potato soup with ham sandwiches since potatoes are all about the starch! 5. Coleslaw

Whenever you want to serve something crunchy alongside a delicate meal, coleslaw is the perfect choice. In addition to providing a wonderful crunch, the cabbage and carrots will help to break up the monotony of the ham and the bread! And, on top of that, it’s delicious! In addition to the traditional components, I like to incorporate raisins and walnuts into my coleslaw. Do you think that combination is strange? Try it out and see how it goes! I guarantee that you will enjoy it.

Make a ham sandwich and serve it with macaroni salad for a filling and pleasant supper! Although this combination is filling, I recommend that you come with a big appetite!

Sometimes all that is required is a single basic ingredient to bring a dish together.

12. Baked Potato Casserole

Potatoes are one of my favorite foods. Anything prepared with potatoes is a culinary delight in my opinion. This baked potato dish, on the other hand, is in a class by itself. When it comes to finely sliced potatoes laden with cheese and served in an ultra-creamy sauce, it’s impossible to say no. Scalloped potatoes are simple to prepare and require little effort. Simply use a mandolin to thinly slice your potatoes and you’ll be done in minutes!

14. MacCheese

Mac and cheese has always been and will continue to be a personal favorite of mine. I adore it to the point that I no longer consider it a side dish, but rather an entrée! And, of course, it goes nicely with a ham sandwich as an accompaniment. The richness of the dish, along with the sweetness of the ham, creates an absolutely fantastic flavor combination. Interested in making your macaroni and cheese even more delectable? Garlic powder and white pepper can be used to season it. You’ll be grateful to me afterwards.

15. Baked Beans

Another comfort food that will elevate your ham sandwich dinner to an entirely new level is the last item on our list. Baked beans are a fantastic side dish that works well with just about everything, including ham sandwiches. What To Serve With Ham Sandwiches (Quick & Delicious)

Ham sandwiches are an old-fashioned favorite. If you’re planning to offer this classic American cuisine, you might be wondering what to serve as a side dish. Here are some suggestions. Ham sandwiches are ideal for when you have a hankering for ham or just want something quick to eat. Your sandwiches can be prepared in a variety of ways, and how you want them is entirely up to you. No matter how you want your ham sandwiches, whether hot, cold, simple, or zesty, the proper side will transform your everyday ham sandwiches into a feast that will impress your taste senses on every level.

17 Side Dishes to Serve With Ham Sandwiches

Serve some potato chips alongside your ham sandwiches if you’re looking for a fast snack. This meal may be consumed on the run because it does not require the use of a fork. Potato chips can be high in fat, therefore I prefer baked potato chips to fried potato chips whenever possible. To add some flavor to my chips, I prefer to serve them with a low-fat dipping sauce.

2. Coleslaw

The combo of cole slaw and ham sandwiches is a surefire winner. It is the crunchiness of the raw cabbage that complements the softness of the sandwich’s bread. Everything about my homemade coleslaw is better than the store-bought stuff. Although store-bought cole slaw is OK, handmade cole slaw has a distinct flavor.

3. French fries

The combo of cole slaw and ham sandwiches is unbeatable. It is the crunchiness of the raw cabbage that complements the softness of the bread in the sandwich. The coleslaw I make from scratch is the best in the world. Homemade slaw, while it may be substituted for store-bought, has a unique flavor.

4. Tomato Soup

If you’re searching for a way to contrast flavors, tomato soup and ham sandwiches are a terrific choice. The acidic flavor of the tomato soup balances out the sweetness of the ham. The fact that tomato soup can be purchased in a can is the nicest part about it. The only ingredients you’ll need are tomatoes, onions, and butter if you want to prepare it yourself.

5. Fruit salad

Fruit salad is light and refreshing, and it’s also healthy for your health in many ways. When combined with ham sandwiches, you get a nutritious lunch that requires no preparation in the kitchen. Fruit salads may be made with whatever sort of fruit you like. Serve apples with a little lemon juice drizzled over them to prevent them from browning too rapidly.

6. Pasta Salad

In order to complement your sweetmeat, offer up a side of pasta salad with your ham sandwiches to balance the sweetness of the sandwich. Pasta salad may be a tad on the fatty side, especially when made with cream cheese. Making this dish healthier by using whole grain pasta is a personal preference of mine.

7. Carrots

It doesn’t matter if you like your carrots raw or perfectly cooked, the semi-sweet carrots are a delectable addition to your ham sandwiches.

My favorite way to prepare carrots is to sauté them in butter and a little water. Add a half cup of peas to your pot of carrots to give it a splash of color and flavor.

8. Clam Chowder

There’s nothing that says down-home like a steaming cup of clam chowder. The rich flavors of the chowder match the sweetness of the ham. Clam chowder makes a terrific comfort dish. This is a great way to provide something hot alongside your ham sandwiches when you’re serving them with cold sandwiches.

9. Macaroni Salad

Macaroni salad is a filling way to include some carbohydrates in your dinner. The thick and creamy salad is a great complement to the dry bread and helps to keep your dinner wet. If you’re searching for a delicious way to bulk up your macaroni salad, try adding some pieces of tuna or chicken to the mix.

10. Macaroni and cheese

Macaroni and cheese, which is thick and flavorful, will transform your ham sandwiches into a creamy joy. This sandwich’s dryness is enhanced by the melted cheese on top of the sandwich. I prefer to use a lot of cheese when I prepare my mac and cheese. Fetta and smoked cheddar are the greatest cheeses since they bring a lot of tastes.

11. Baked Potatoes

Make your ham sandwiches a creamy joy with macaroni and cheese, which is thick and full of flavor. This sandwich’s dryness is enhanced by the melted cheese on top. When it comes to making mac and cheese, I prefer to use a lot of cheese. Fetta and smoked cheddar are the ideal cheeses to use since they are flavorful and provide a lot of depth to dishes.

12. Baked Beans

It’s not just for summertime barbeques that baked beans are a good choice. They’re a hearty complement to any dinnertime, any night of the week, and any occasion. Cooking baked beans with ground beef makes for a hearty meal that is full with meat and delicious tastes. If you are managing your calorie intake, ground turkey can be substituted for ground beef.

13. Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes

Summer barbeques aren’t the only occasions when baked beans are served. On any given night of the week, they offer a hearty complement to dinnertime. Cooking baked beans with ground beef makes for a hearty meal that is full with meat and delicious taste. If you are monitoring your calories, ground turkey may be substituted for ground beef.

14. Collard Greens

When collard greens are added to ham sandwiches, the dish is elevated to a higher level. Collard greens, a southern traditional, provide the savory meat with a luscious layer of flavor. My favorite way to reduce the bitterness of collard greens is to cook them in a little white vinegar while they’re cooking. The greens will become softer and less chewy as a result of this.

15. Oven Roasted Corn

As a result of its powerful flavor and semi-sweet taste, oven-roasted corn is a fantastic accompaniment to ham sandwiches. Add some green and red bell peppers, as well as a little onion, to your roasted corn for a delicious way to spice it up.

16. Rice Pudding

Rice pudding is unlike any other comfort food in its ability to relax you. It is a mouth-watering combination with the delicious ham since it is sweet and rich. Brown rice, rather than white rice, can be used to make rice pudding for a more nutritious version. In addition, skim milk can be substituted for half and half to reduce the amount of fat in the recipe.

17. Ambrosia Salad

Ambrosia salad, a delectable dish worthy for the Gods, is the perfect combination of sweet and tropical tastes that bring out the smokey flavor of the ham.

This delectable salad may be prepared with sour cream, cream cheese, or cool whip, depending on your preference. My favorite salad is my Ambrosia salad, which is prepared with cool whip and topped with cherries.

Wrap Up

With its perfect balance of sweet and tropical ingredients that bring out the savory smokey flavor of the ham, Ambrosia salad is fit for the Gods. Sandwiches made with ham salad are a quick and easy family meal or picnic dish. Sandwiches can be quartered and served as lunchtime or party sandwiches, or they can be served in biscuitssoft tiny sandwich buns. • Chopped cooked ham
  • 1/2 cup finely diced celery
  • 2 cups chopped cooked ham 1 teaspoon finely chopped onion
  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise (or to taste)
  • Prepared mustard (one scant teaspoon)
  • Season with salt to taste
  • Peppercorns, freshly ground black, to taste 12 pieces of bread
  • 1/3 cup (5 1/3 tablespoons) unsalted butter or additional mayonnaise for the toast
  • 12 slices of cheese
  1. Assemble all of the materials
  2. Finely chop the ham and place it in a mixing dish. Combine the finely chopped celery, grated onion, mayonnaise, and mustard in a large mixing bowl. Mix until everything is well-combined. If necessary, add additional mayonnaise to moisten the mixture. Taste and season with salt and pepper if necessary. Arrange the bread pieces on the work area, whether they are toasted or not. Bread pieces should be lightly buttered, or they can be coated with more mayonnaise if desired. 6 pieces of bread should be spread with equal parts of the ham salad mixture. Place the remaining 6 pieces of bread on top of the mixture. Cut the sandwiches in half diagonally and serve them with chips, French fries, salad, or a cup of soup on the side. Enjoy

Tips

  • Use yellow mustard, Dijon mustard, whole-grain mustard, Creole mustard, or your favorite gourmet mustard combination to make this dish. To make 24 tiny luncheon or party sandwiches, cut each sandwich in half diagonally and then into quarters again. Alternatively, mini party rolls might be used. The bread should be toasted or grilled before constructing the sandwiches. The onion taste is enhanced without the disagreeable texture of raw onion bits when the onion is grated. To shred an onion, start by peeling it and removing the top. Grab the root end of the onion and grind it on the medium side of a box grater.

Recipe Variations

  • A diced hard-boiled egg should be added to the ham mixture. In a separate bowl, combine some finely chopped sweet or dill pickles—or dill or sweet pickle relish—with the mayonnaise and mustard to make the ham filling. Line the inside of the loaf of bread with lettuce leaves and thinly sliced tomatoes or avocado
  • Spread the bottom slices of the bread with a little butter or mayonnaise, then top with the ham salad. Using a slice of cheddar or American cheese, assemble the sandwiches as follows: Sandwiches should be served open-faced on a baking sheet, which should be placed under the broiler only before the cheese has melted. On top of the filling, arrange the remaining slices of toasted bread.

The Best Ham Salad (+Video)

The finest ham salad recipe merely calls for leftover ham, mayonnaise, celery, onion, and seasonings that have been carefully blended. Yummy! My most often requested recipe!

THE BEST HAM SALAD

This salad has been a family favorite for more than 25 years. There is no way to surpass perfection. I modified this recipe from one that I found in my very first Betty Crocker Cookbook, which I had purchased years ago. For those of you who enjoy my FAMOUS POTATO SALAD, you’ll know that those old Betty Crocker recipes are unbeatable! Throughout the years, I’ve just tweaked them a little bit to suit my own preferences and since I’m finicky about my salad recipes. This ham salad dish will become a favorite that you will use over and over again in the future.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What type of ham should I purchase? This dish is ideal for using up leftover ham after the holidays. I used a tiny boneless cooked ham for this recipe because it was on hand. Thick ham steaks would also be a good choice. Is it necessary for me to use a food processor? No. You could probably chop this up by hand if you were so inclined. It will take some effort, though, because you want the meat to be finely chopped. You may also use a blender to make this. Simply mince a small amount at a time.

Before serving, take a bite of this ham salad and see how it tastes.

Make the changes that suit your preferences.

Filling for rolls, biscuits, and HAM SALAD PINWHEELS.

What is the best way to keep leftovers? It is best to store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator after cooking. It will endure for up to 4 or 5 days at the most. Ham salad should not be frozen, in my opinion. When the mayonnaise defrosts, it may separate a little bit more.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (FULL RECIPE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POST)

  • Preparation: boneless cooked ham, hard boiled egg, celery, onion, fresh black pepper, sweet pickle relish, mayonnaise, mustard, lettuce.

HOW TO MAKE THE BEST HAM SALAD:

Blend or process the ham, egg, celery, and onion in a blender or food processor until smooth (season with a bit of salt and black pepper). Pulse 20-25 times (short, fast pulses) to mince the ingredients. Separately, combine the remaining ingredients in a mixing bowl (sweet pickle relish, mayonnaise, mustard.) Then add it to the minced ham mixture and combine well. Cover and place in the refrigerator. I prefer to refrigerate ham salad for many hours before serving. It really improves after a period of time in the refrigerator.

  • 1.2 pounds boneless cooked ham (leftover or purchased thick slab, trimmed of fat and diced)
  • 1 hard-boiled egg
  • 1 stalk celery, coarsely chopped
  • 2 teaspoons finely chopped onion
  • 2 teaspoons sweet pickle relish (optional)
  • 3 1/4 cups mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon prepared mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Assorted crackers and/or soft rolls
  • Blend or process the ham, egg, celery, and onion in a blender or food processor until smooth (season with a pinch of freshly ground black pepper). Pulse 20-25 times (short, fast pulses) to mince the ingredients. Use a spatula to scrape along the sides of the food processor to ensure that everything is well mixed. In a separate bowl, combine the remaining ingredients (sweet pickle relish, mayonnaise, and mustard)
  • Set aside. After that, add in the minced ham mixture. Cover and place in the refrigerator. I prefer to chill it for a few hours before serving. It really improves after a period of time in the refrigerator
  • Using crackers as a vehicle, spread the mixture on rolls, biscuits, or crackers
  • This ham salad is a delicious way to use up any leftover Christmas ham. I set out to create my own version of a ham salad that would incorporate all of my favorite ingredients into one dish. It is best to use a small boneless cooked ham for this recipe
  • However, ham steaks will also work well. After the ham has been processed in the food processor or blender, you should have 3 cups ground ham. Before serving, take a bite of this ham salad and see how it tastes. I didn’t add any further salt to mine because the ham was already salty enough that any additional salt would have been excessive. Make adjustments to suit your preferences

How To Make Ham Salad

I’ve discovered that using a food processor is the most efficient method of preparing this dish. If you don’t have a hammer, chop the ham into as small pieces as you possibly can without breaking it. The first step is to combine all of the ingredients in the bowl of a food processor. Pulse around 12 to 15 times until everything is well-combined.

Then, using an aspatula, fold in the finely chopped celery until everything is well combined. Make careful to taste it and adjust the amount of mayonnaise and freshly cracked pepper as necessary. If you have the patience, chill the ham salad for at least an hour before presenting it to guests.

Want To Change Up The Recipe?

Ham Salad may be made with a variety of different ingredients, which you can find on the internet. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Green onions, bell pepper, Swiss cheese, mustard or horseradish sauce
  • Chopped green onions, bell pepper, Swiss cheese

Pro Tip: If you don’t have any leftover ham from the holidays but still want to make Ham Salad, you may purchase cooked ham from the deli, which can be chopped or thickly sliced to your preference.

How To Store Ham Salad

Refrigerate the ham salad in an airtight jar for up to 3 days before serving. Keep in mind that because it contains mayonnaise, if you are serving it as an appetizer, you should not keep it out for more than 2 hours because it will go bad.

How to Make Ham Salad Sandwiches

You might have your ham ground by your butcher, but I like to use my food processor. I chopped the ham into bits and placed it in the processor bowl with the large blade, processing it for a few seconds each time. Don’t pulse the ingredients too much or you’ll end up with a thick paste. After that, everything else is placed in the bowl. Just a few more pulses and you’ll be finished! Make your sandwiches by assembling the ham salad first, then chilling it in the fridge for an hour to enable the flavors to emerge.

I’ve tried it with fresh minced onion, with green onion, and with red onion, and none of them come close to the subtlety of the dried onion in flavor.

Tips for Making Ham Salad Sandwiches

After the family dinner is finished, whether it’s Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or just another Sunday, this ham salad dish makes use of the leftover ham that always seems to linger after the meal. Because there isn’t much else to cover up the taste of a bad ham in this recipe—I like to use the leftovers from a bone-in smoked ham—make sure to use decent ham for this dish. My mother constantly encourages me to search for a ham that has a lower water content than the average. You don’t want your sandwich to be soggy.

I enjoy it a little drier than most people.

You may use either sweet or spicy pickle relish, depending on your preference.

Ham Salad Spread

This is a recipe that has been in my family for more than 50 years. You can change the proportions of the components to suit your preferences. When it comes to grinding the ham, we would use a meat grinder. A food processor, on the other hand, is convenient and saves time. I separate the egg whites from the cooked yokes and store them separately. When the yokes are mashed, they are combined with the mustard and mayonnaise before being added into the ham mixture. The ham salad is not excessively wet since I start with a reduced quantity of these components.) If necessary, a bit more can be added to get the appropriate consistency.) We sandwich it between two slices of bread and top it with a couple of leaves of lettuce.

Make careful to store any leftovers in the refrigerator.

Most helpful critical review

I read the reviews before preparing this recipe and used chopped dill pickles for the pickle relish, as suggested by Sarah Jo. However, I believe the “bite” of the relish might have been stronger. I quadrupled the recipe and used roughly half the quantity of mayonnaise and mustard (both Hellmans low-calorie varieties) and found that this was more than enough. I also took care to select a ham that was considered “upscale” to begin with. People who tasted it enjoyed it, but they didn’t rave about it like they did about the other dishes on the buffet.

Fortunately, my husband like the sandwich recipe, which was fortunate because we had a lot of leftovers.

Because I don’t believe you should have to alter a recipe from its original form, and if you do, it should be for the better.

This was fantastic! I did, however, make a few modifications. As a substitute for the ham, I used store-bought nacho chips, and as a substitute for the eggs, I used cake icing. I don’t care for mayonnaise, so I substituted chicken stock for it, and then I entirely skipped using any of the other ingredients stated in this recipe as well. Seriously, what is it about folks who dramatically alter a recipe and then leave nasty reviews that gets to me? You are completely unaware of the fact that, as soon as the formula is altered, you are no longer reviewing the same product.
