Side Dish for Sausage and Peppers: A Delicious Wish List

All right, let’s throw our favorite sausage on the grill and then get to work on some delicious side dishes to accompany your dinner. And, oh, what a hearty and filling lunch it will be.

1. Broccoli Rabe with Onions and Red Pepper Flakes

Sausages and green vegetables are like best friends on a platter since they have a common interest in each other. The mix of sweet Italian sausage and the mild sharpness of broccoli simply seems to be destined to work together well.

As is the situation with the broccoli rabe in this instance. In this episode, Jack and Martha share a broccoli rabe dish with onions and red pepper flakes that will make sausage and peppers sit up and pay notice. A Family Feast has the recipe, which you can get here.

2. Ancient Grains Risotto

We, like everyone else, enjoy a good short-grain ricerisotto. And by anyone, we mean anyone. However, it might be enjoyable to switch things up and try something new every now and then. And when we say “new,” we really mean “ancient.” For a variety of reasons, ancient grains are currently popular, and there is a good explanation for this. Unquestionably excellent and savory, they’re a must-try. They’re even better when they’re topped with mushrooms and goat cheese, which makes them a fantastic side dish to serve alongside spicy Italian sausage and peppers.

3. Caesar Salad with Polenta Croutons

A substantial salad with a unique spin is something we enjoy. Perhaps a splash of something surprising in the vinaigrette, such as pickle brine, might be appropriate. Alternatively, meats paired with fruit. Alternatively, polenta cubes might be used in place of croutons (please bear with us here). “What the what?” you could be asking yourself. However, how delectable does it sound? On top of a Caesar salad with Italian sausage and peppers, there’s nothing better than fried cornmeal bliss. We are overjoyed by this development.

Carrian and Cade’s recipe, which we’ve included below, is fantastic.

4. Cauliflower Steaks

We enjoy interacting with our food. Not simply tossing rolls back and forth at the dinner table, which we may or may not do at any given time. Playing with food entails creating the unexpected by bringing it to the table from nowhere. For example, cauliflower steaks that are crispy while consumers are anticipating florets. Voila! Consider how beautiful a meal of thick cauliflower steaks with a highly hued Portuguese sausage and mounds of peppers will appear next to a plate of brilliantly hued Portuguese sausage and peppers.

5. Grilled Zucchini

When we think of grilled Italian sausage with bell peppers, we immediately think of other vegetables that would taste delicious on the grill as well. Come one, come all to the party! In addition, zucchini, in our opinion, is the ideal grilling companion. When it has a slight char on the outside, the flavor blends wonderfully with the main course. And, after all, don’t we all prefer it when our sides “meld perfectly”? Oh, yes, we certainly do! Lee’s dish from Fit Foodie Finds is one that we especially appreciate.

6. Caramelized Onion Bread

Other vegetables that we’d want to grill alongside grilled Italian sausage and bell peppers come to us when we think of grilled Italian sausage and bell peppers. We invite you all to join us. We also believe that zucchini is a fantastic grilling companion for meats and vegetables.

A mild char enhances the flavor and allows it to blend seamlessly with the main course. In addition, don’t we all adore it when our sides “melt perfectly?” Absolutely! We have it! AtFit Foodie Finds, we really enjoy Lee’s dish. Consider what you think after taking a look.

7. Baked Polenta Fries

Corn with sausages and peppers is a favorite of ours. On the dish, there is nothing but perfect taste synchrony. And we thought it would be interesting to offer some baked polenta with the sausages instead of corn kernels to mix things up a bit. Then we came on this recipe for polenta “fries,” and we realized that strips of buttery polenta that had been fried to perfection were exactly what we had been seeking. To get all of the corny goodness, head over to Archana’s Kitchen and get the recipe.

8. Caprese Salad

For some dishes, we particularly enjoy a caprese salad served on a tray that has been beautifully arranged. “Hey there, lovely!” We, on the other hand, like experimenting with different forms and sizes. And small cherry tomatoes simply scream out to be bundled together in a dish with similar-sized mozzarella and a generous amount of freshly chopped basil. With cherry tomatoes, we have no right to argue. They may be cute and cuddly, but they also have strong opinions. And a chopped caprese salad is unquestionably the best accompaniment to sausage and peppers.

Kelly’s dish is a favorite of ours here at Trial and Eater.

9. Arugula Salad with Burrata

When it comes to flavors and sensations, we often find that opposites attract in the culinary world. On the platter, sweet Italian sausage and scarlet bell peppers will mingle with spicy arugula and insanely creamy burrata to form a cozy nest of flavor. We really enjoy dressing our salads with a splash of balsamic vinegar to add a hint of sweetness to the dish. In fact, when we came across this recipe from AnnaViva La Food, we made a mental note to include the salad to our repertoire of side dishes with sausage and peppers in the future.

In addition to arugula.

10. Roasted Assorted Vegetables

Sausage and peppers adore the inclusion of vegetables to their dishes. Embrace the tasty broccoli, please! Embrace the sweetness of the tomatoes! Bring on the earthy mushrooms, too! There is enough space on the plate for everyone to complement and contrast each other’s flavors. Chef Julie over at Table for Two has created a terrific meal that will transport Italian sausage and bell peppers to the destination of their dreams. That is, “Full-Bodied Flavor Town on a Plate,” as the saying goes.

11. Arancini balls

When putting together a supper of sausage and peppers, little savory arancini are a fantastic complement to the flavors. This is the solution to the age-old conundrum of what to serve with sausage and peppers on the grill. They have a crisp texture. They’ve been fried. And they’re stuffed with rice, peas, and cheese, among other things. They’re basically selling themselves on the chopping block. “Oh, hello there. Was it possible that you were staring at us?

“That’s what we thought.” We also decided to incorporate pig sausages and pork arancini into the menu to tie everything together. Double the amount of pork, double the amount of pleasure! At Orsara Recipes, Chef Pasquale offers all of the fried pleasure one could ask for. Arancini Rice Balls Recipe

12. Mom’s Sweet Onion Coleslaw

If grating onions is incorrect, we don’t want to be found out as incorrect. We knew we wanted something different to go with our sausage and pepper sub, so we turned to the internet for inspiration. We also came across a recipe that looked interesting. Grated onion serves as the foundation for this tangy, mayo-free coleslaw, which is bursting with flavor and texture. The flavor just keeps coming and coming, and our palate is dancing with delight as a result. Looking for a delicious side dish to accompany a sausage and peppers sandwich?

For all of the tanginess that your sausage and peppers crave, check out Brenda’s recipe over at A Farm Girl’s Dabbles.

Huge and substantial French fries are the perfect accompaniment to a filling hoagie with pork and pepper. We adore the crispy surface, which contrasts beautifully with the soft potato filling. This is a swarm of textures flying about your lips when these guys are cooked to perfection in the deep fryer. The perfect French fry elevates an already-great dish to a new level of perfection. Start by washing the potatoes well after following Stephanie’s recipe over at The Cozy Cook. You already know what you’re going to have for dinner tonight.

Beer and sausage, of course, are one of the most traditional pairings of drink and cuisine in the world. Cabbage In Instant Pot

I am confident that there is no food on this list that is easier to prepare than this cabbage in an instant pot. Because you’re using a little slice of butter instead of oil, this will be an excellent problem for greasy sausages to solve. By substituting veggie stock for chicken stock, you may make it a vegan recipe. You should start preparing cabbage right now because it is a vegetable that I feel everyone will like.

Sauerkraut is just fermented cabbage in its most basic form. Despite the fact that it did not originate in Germany, sauerkraut has swiftly established itself as one of the most popular side dishes in the country. It’s so popular in Germany that it’s practically impossible to go into a restaurant without seeing it. Because of the fermentation process that sauerkraut goes through, it has nutritional and health benefits that go beyond those of raw cabbage. It’s crunchy and tangy, and it’s perfect for tossing on top of a beer braise ring or layering on the bottom of a large sandwich.

Classic Coleslaw

It is indisputable that cabbage is a versatile vegetable, which is why you may use it to prepare a variety of side dishes. Sausages and coleslaw are a classic pairing because coleslaw has a sweet, nutty, fatty, and crunchy flavor, while sausages are greasy and savory in flavor. This is a flavor that is bright and refreshing for your meals. All you have to do is shred the cabbage and carrots and combine them with a special sauce before serving. A delectable side dish will be ready in a blink of an eye.

Stewy White Beans

This dish is adaptable and can be prepared in less than 20 minutes to serve a crowd. In addition to the primary attraction – white beans – you may include escarole, garlic, and rosemary to enhance the flavor of the meal. In contrast to other recipes that use escarole as a last ingredient, you should whisk it in before adding the white beans. This meal is best served hot, topped with grated cheese and a squeeze of fresh lemon. The starchy flavor of the beans, the fragrant flavor of the condiments, and the softness of the escarole are three important characteristics that will keep you entertained until the very end of the sausage party.

Corn On The Cob In The Instant Pot

Despite the fact that corn may be processed in a variety of ways, I feel that boiling maize in an instant pot is a fantastic approach to maintain its nutrients and flavor. Because corn is so flavorful on its own, you won’t need to add any more spices. The juiciness and little crunch of the corn will have you exclaiming over how the simplest ingredients can produce the most delicious dish.

Green Beans Almondine

When you look at the dish’s name, you’ve probably realized that it’s a side dish from the country of France, and you’re absolutely correct. Best served during Thanksgiving, green beans with almonds are a light and fresh green side dish that will enhance the flavor of your turkey sausages and other roasted meats.

Green beans should be blanched before being stir-fried, and then the lemon zest and juice should be added to create a delectable flavor. What could be better than tucking into a plate of luscious green beans and nutty almonds during a sausage gathering?

Baked Beans

When you look at the dish’s name, you’ve probably figured that it’s a side dish from the country of France, and you’re absolutely correct! Green beans with almonds are a light and fresh green side dish that is best served over the Thanksgiving holiday. They will enhance the flavor of your sausages. After blanching the green beans, you should stir-fry them with the lemon zest and juice for a delectable taste. When it comes to a sausage party, there’s nothing more delightful than savoring delicious green beans and crunchy nuts.

Sauteed Onions And Peppers

Grilled sausage served without sautéed peppers and onions is a complete failure. These two plates might be considered to be the perfect complement to one another. While sauteed peppers and onions may not have as glamorous a moniker as other side dishes, they are necessary for your sausages to be more flavorful. When these two vegetables are combined, their innate sweetness is brought to the surface. Consequently, when you are unable to create other side dishes, sautéed peppers or onions are the perfect substitute.

Let’s have a look at how to sauté bell peppers and onions like a professional chef!

Cheesy Mac And Cheese Side Dishes

When paired with sausages, the two varieties of mac and cheese side dishes listed below guarantee to deliver an outstanding flavor experience. Give them a shot if you’re seeking for something with a mouth-watering flavor.

Mac And Cheese

Macaroni and cheese is a well-known dish, and there are several variations available in different parts of the world. Naturally, there is no “proper” or “wrong” way to prepare this cuisine, so you are free to make whatever changes you want to it when you are putting it together in your kitchen. When it comes to mac and cheese, what kind of sausage goes best with it? Given that one of the most distinguishing aspects of longaniza is that it pairs nicely with any type of pasta, I recommend pairing the sausage with this creamy and cheesy dish.

The mac and cheese’s superb cheesy and creamy flavor, along with its eye-catching yellow color, will immediately capture your attention.

In addition to being liked by adults and children alike, this supper is appealing to the entire family.

Baked Cauliflower Mac and Cheese

While the classic approach with macaroni and cheese sauce is excellent, it is not ideal for low-carb or gluten-free diets.

Hence, roasted cauliflower mac and cheese is a good option. You will use cauliflower instead of macaroni in this dish, and I am confident your guests will adore this modern style. Who cares about the ingredients while the flavor is unchanged and even much more wonderful than regular macaroni.

Other Delish Side Dishes That Water Your Mouth Water

With these delectable side dishes, you can add variety to your sausage side dish repertoire. Don’t be concerned; they are difficult and time-consuming to construct because definite solutions are provided below.

Then you can serve it with sausages anytime you like. A cinnamon stick may be a great feature in this sauce, adding a warm, earthy, spicy flavor with a citrus accent to the warm, earthy, spicy flavor.

Creamy Polenta

Polenta, which has its origins in Northern Italy, is a favorite side dish with ravioli, which is another classic dish in Italian cuisine. Meaty sausages and creamy polenta will make a wonderful pairing, so be creative! Polenta is a delicious side dish that is simple to prepare once you get the hang of it. Everyone will go crazy over it. Polenta has a rich, creamy flavor with a hint of sweetness from the butter used in its preparation. Grilled Italian Sausage Sandwiches with Pepper-Onion Foil Packs

One of our favorite tailgate party foods is grilled Italian sausage sandwiches with pepper-onion foil packs. (This post has been updated.) Memorial Day is only a couple of weeks away, so plan ahead. In light of the fact that social separation will most certainly still be in effect, this year’s celebration will most likely be unusual (to protect against the spread of COVID-19). It is our intention to hold a barbecue in a nearby state park (provided the park is still open by that time; if not, we may have to settle for a parking lot).

Grilled Italian Sausages with Pepper-Onion Foil Packs will be one of our favorite pack-and-go destination grilling dinners, and we’ll be bringing it along.

Meal-prep: the pepper-onion foil packs

Creating foil packets with peppers and onions is a straightforward process that takes only minutes. Simply create two pockets out of heavy-duty aluminum foil. Use foil rectangles that are approximately 12″ x 20″ in size, fold them in half, then roll the two sides that are next to the fold. After that, fill each pocket with sliced sweet onion and red bell pepper, season with salt and pepper, and drizzle with olive oil. Finally, seal the pockets and wrap up the remaining side of the paper. Keep refrigerated until you’re ready to pack up your belongings.

Prepping the grill

We are big lovers of charcoal here at the house. Having said that, you may, of course, use a gas grill to prepare your meal (set it up for medium heat and indirect cooking). This lunch was prepared on a variety of barbecues, including a full-size Weber, a little Smokey Joe, and in-ground grills found at parks. Bringing a grill brush with you will allow you to clean the grates if you want to go with the last option. a recent grill-out at Miller Park in Milwaukee, WI, for a tailgate party for two people.

Combining this technique with the practice of letting coals ash over before adding the meat helps to ensure that your meal does not taste like fuel.

Cooking the sausages and pepper-onion foil packs

We prefer spicy Italian sausages, although mild Italian sausages are also available. The foil packets should be placed on the indirect heat side of the grill, while the sausages should be placed directly over the embers. Grill the sausages for 3–5 minutes on each side, turning halfway through, to brown them. Once browned, transfer to the indirect heat side of the grill and cook for another 12-15 minutes, or until the meat is cooked through. Every 5 minutes or so, flip the container. Every 5 minutes or so, rotate and turn the foil packets to ensure that the veggies are completely cooked through.

Serving your Grilled Italian Sausage Sandwiches

We always lightly toast our rolls for a minute or two before presenting them to our guests (use good bratwurst buns or hoagie rolls).

A layer of melty provolone cheese is our preferred topping for our sandwiches, but it is entirely optional. Place two slices of provolone cheese (if using), one sausage, and about half a cup of the pepper-onion mixture on a toasted bread and toast it for another minute.

Side dishes and odds and ends

  • CookBlogShare, a terrific food blogger recipe-sharing event hosted this week at Recipes Made Easy, is where I’m offering my Grilled Italian Sausage Sandwiches with Pepper-Onion Foil Packs.

  1. To assemble the foil packets, rip two sheets of foil measuring 12″ x 20″ each. Each one should be folded in half. Each piece should be rolled three–four times firmly to form a pouch, with the sides next to the fold. Combine the cut onions and peppers in a large mixing bowl. Approximately divide the mixture between the two foil bags. Add 12 teaspoons salt, 14 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper, and 1 tablespoon of oil to each pouch and mix thoroughly. Seal the pouch by folding the top of the pouch numerous times. Refrigerate until ready to use. Prepare a charcoal grill for indirect heat by soaking it in water. The sausages should be placed immediately over the embers when the coals are hot and entirely ashy white (white-hot). Place the pepper-onion packs on the grill’s indirect heat side
  2. Cook for about 15 minutes. Grill the sausages for 3–5 minutes per side on both sides, or until browned (make sure they don’t burn
  3. See Recipe Note1), turning halfway through. Turning as required, continue grilling for an additional 8–9 minutes (for a total of 15–18 minutes to cook through) or until the chicken is well done. You may toast your rolls by moving the sausages to an indirect heat source and toasting the bread until it is lightly toasted. To assemble the sandwiches, place 1–2 slices of provolone cheese (if using) on the bottom of each roll before rolling it up. In a large mixing bowl, combine one hot sausage and 12 cup of the pepper-onion mixture (see Recipe Note2)
  4. Mix well.

  1. If your fire is too hot, transfer the sausages to a cooler area where they will cook more slowly. Turn every few minutes until the chicken is cooked through. When opening the foil packs, use extreme caution to avoid getting steam burns.

How do you cook pork sausages on the grill?

It’s best to start by boiling the sausages in water on the stovetop until they’re thoroughly cooked before placing them on a hot grill for a few minutes until they’re gently charred and bronzed, as shown in the photo above. When the sausages are simmering, they are less likely to dry out on the grill, and thoroughly cooking them before grilling reduces the likelihood of flare-ups. If you don’t want to go to the trouble of simmering before grilling, that’s just OK. If you don’t want to go through that procedure, simply cook the sausages on a low heat for a few minutes before finishing them on a hotter portion of the grill.

The liquids from the sweet peppers combine with the oil and vinegar to form an emulsified, dressing-like coating on the veggies that makes them excellent enough to eat on their own without any other ingredients.

The peppers and onions, instead of serving as a necessary vegetable accompaniment, shine brightly alongside the A-list cut of meat.

  • 2 lb. hot Italian sausage
  • 4 bell peppers, sliced in half lengthwise with seeds and stems removed
  • 2 lb. hot Italian sausage
  • 2-inch-long onions, peeled and quartered lengthwise, with the root still attached
  • SALT and freshly ground black pepper are essential ingredients. 1 garlic clove, peeled and grated
  • 1/4 cup chopped oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
  • 6 soft Italian sub rolls

Put the sausages in a large pan over medium heat and cover with water until they are almost completely immersed. Increase the heat to medium-high and continue to cook until the water comes to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium to maintain a simmer. Cook the sausages for about 10 minutes total, turning them halfway through, until they are completely cooked through. Remove from the oven and place sausages on the grill, searing on all sides until grill marks develop, about 3 minutes more. The internal temperature of the sausages should range between 160 and 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

3While that’s going on, throw some onions and peppers on the grill.

If they begin to char too rapidly, reduce the heat on the grill (or transfer them to a cooler portion of the grill) until they are no longer charred.

Remove the chicken from the grill and set it aside.

5Once the peppers and onions have been allowed to cool sufficiently, cut out the root to break apart the onion wedges and slice them lengthwise into 12 inch strips.

Transfer the veggies to a large mixing bowl with the garlic, tomatoes, oil, and vinegar and toss to combine. Season liberally with salt and pepper to taste. Toss thoroughly. Season with salt and pepper to taste. 6Stir the sausage and pepper mixture into sub rolls and serve immediately to guests.

If you’re spending a summer evening outside by the grill, rosé and lighter-bodied reds that are slightly cooled are ideal. An off-dry German riesling would be ideal for balancing out the heat, while a high-acid German Pinot Blanc would be ideal for balancing out the sweetness of the peppers. Try a Sicilian red or a Californian Syrah if you want something a little stronger and pepperier.
