The Best Fast Food Fish Sandwiches, Ranked

Maggie Rossetti created this illustration for Thrillist. Thank you for visiting The Fasties, Thrillist’s second-annual fast food awards! Several categories, ranging from Greatest Chicken Nuggets to Best Bacon Cheeseburgers and many more, are included in the awards, which honor all of the best items that have come out of drive-thru windows over the course of the previous year. Take a look at the whole awards event, as well as the complete list of categories and winners. There has been a renaissance in the fried chicken sandwich, and it has not been a brief one.

In addition, although we’re certainly on board (please keep the fried chicken sandwiches coming!

Just in case you haven’t noticed, there’s a whole other category of fast food brilliance that merits our admiration: the fish sandwich.

There are some newcomers, such as the Popeyes Cajun Flounder Sandwich, as well as some stalwarts that bring back memories, such as the McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish.

Ordering a fish sandwich may be a special event, so we want to make sure that every time you do, it’s a pleasant one.

11. Carl’s Jr./Hardee’s: Beer Battered Fish Sandwich

The return of beloved menu items at fast food restaurants is frequently reason for joy (and a lot of ads, if you’re Taco Bell with those Nacho Fries) among the customer base. However, when Carl’s Jr./Hardee’s announced in February 2021 that the beer-battered fish sandwich would be returning, we’re not sure there was much of a cause to be enthusiastic about the announcement. This is due to the fact that the sandwich tastes as though it has been languishing in the back of a freezer since the last time the restaurant offered it for sale.

It should be returned to the water.

10. McDonald’s: Filet-O-Fish

The Filet-O-Fish sandwich from McDonald’s is the iconic fast food fish sandwich. It’s a well-known symbol. This is a classic. It’s also a little disappointing, given the fact that it’s a fast food institution. Despite the fact that it’s a little strange, we’re not completely opposed to slapping some cheese on top of a fish sandwich. In the case of the Filet-O-Fish, on the other hand, the slice of American is overbearing to the point where we question whether McDonald’s is merely using it to mask the flavor of the fish.

That’s understandable.

The lack of crispiness in the breading, on the other hand, is what ultimately brings this ship down.

There’s nothing on this sandwich that gives it a satisfying crunch to it. Order it only for the nostalgic value. Order it if you want to experience a fast food classic. It was ordered out of need. However, if you’re searching for a genuinely outstanding fish sandwich, avoid ordering it.

9. Burger King: Big Fish Sandwich

The pickle may make or break a sandwich, as we’ve stated previously and will reiterate: pickles are essential. In the instance of Burger King’s Big Fish Sandwich, the pickles really add to the overall flavor of the sandwich. On a toasted brioche bun, a breaded White Alaskan Pollock filet is topped with tartar sauce, zesty crinkle-cut pickles, and a little lettuce, and the whole thing is wrapped in a brioche bun. BK’s seafood selection is elevated by the addition of these toppings. The King’s ample smear of tartar sauce, which hits all of the perfect notes in the bites with the pickles and, of course, the buttery brioche bun, is a personal favorite of ours.

So it’s no surprise that this sandwich is served with pickles by the chain.

8. White Castle: Panko Breaded Fish Slider

The pickle can make or ruin a sandwich, as we’ve stated previously and will reiterate: With regard to Burger King’s Big Fish Sandwich, the pickles surely add to the overall appeal of the sandwich. On a toasted brioche bun, a breaded White Alaskan Pollock filet is covered with tartar sauce, zesty crinkle-cut pickles, and a little lettuce, and the whole thing is served with a side of fries. BK’s seafood selection is elevated by the addition of these garnishes. The King’s hefty smear of tartar sauce, which hits all of the perfect notes in the bites with the pickles, and, of course, the buttery brioche bun, is a particular favorite among our group.

It’s no surprise that the sandwich is served with pickles.

7. Arby’s: Crispy Fish Sandwich

Arby’s is well aware that it is superior to McDonald’s. So much so that the fast food sandwich restaurant has a long history of teasing its competition with prank calls. They’re not bluffing, but they’re also not lying. It’s undoubtedly one of the largest fish we’ve seen so far on our journey, as shown by the golden-brown color of the wild-caught Alaskan Pollock that comes topped with tartar sauce, iceberg lettuce, and a sesame seed bun. Compared to its competitors, it is thicker and crispier, and, as a big plus, it is shaped more like a fish filet.

Arby’s is definitely counting on the size of this sandwich to attract people who are looking for fish sandwiches, and it could just be on to something.

6. Checkers: Crispy Fish Sandwich

The Crispy Fish Sandwich at Checkers is a safe bet, much like a lot of the other options on the menu. However, while it lacks that extra something that would allow it to crack the top five of this ranking, it does contain everything you could want in a fish sandwich that can be made quickly and inexpensively: a crispy, delightfully greasy piece of fried fish with a delicate fish flavor that will please everyone and plenty of tartar sauce to make for perfectly balanced bites from beginning to end.

Checkers manages to do what a lot of other chains are unable to do while being a small fish in a very large pond, according to the company. Maggie Rossetti created this illustration for Thrillist.

5. Culver’s: North Atlantic Cod Filet Sandwich

Lobsters are not something you’ll see on the menu at a diner. In addition to not serving lobster, Culver’s has a huge menu for a fast food restaurant, and they do sell butterfly giant shrimp, which are popular in the Caribbean. A fast food establishment that specializes in burgers and shakes at its heart, but is also confident enough to serve out cheese curds and giant shrimp when the occasion calls for it. If you’ve ever visited a Culver’s, you know for a certainty that the chain manages to pull it off with ease and confidence.

  1. In principle, having a bun that is long enough to accommodate a lengthy filet should be a tremendous advantage.
  2. After that, however, things get substantially better, with a substantial chunk of fresh, crispy, light cod that would never pass for a fast-food fish patty on the rest of the sandwich.
  3. ), and a sense of creaminess thanks to the shredded cheese.
  4. It’s just surprising that there isn’t a lobster feast on the schedule.

4. Jack in the Box: Fish Sandwich

As seen by menu items such as Sauced and Loaded Fries, which raises the question, “What if someone made poutine, but instead of gravy and cheese curds used numerous cheese sauces, bacon, jalapeo, and absolutely no shame?” Jack in the Box is known for pushing the boundaries. In that case, you’d expect a fish sandwich from Jack in the Box to have exotic ingredients like pepper jack tartar sauce or CBD-infused pollock or something (just so you know, none of these things are actually real. yet.) Even though it was a simple dish with a generic name, the Fish Sandwich managed to make it onto the menu somehow.

  1. Fast food restaurants do not often market their food in terms of sustainability since their food is frequently not sustainable.
  2. And it’s encouraging to see.
  3. A well-constructed sandwich has a patty that is exceptionally crispy.
  4. We’ll give the wilted shredded lettuce a pass because fast food restaurants don’t exactly have a stellar reputation when it comes to serving up fresh produce.

It’s so easy and tasty that you won’t even need to smother it in 14 different cheese sauces to enjoy it fully. Maggie Rossetti created this illustration for Thrillist.

3. Whataburger: Whatacatch

Every time we go to a fast food restaurant, the only option on the menu is a fish sandwich. It’s a nightmare that we have every time this happens. To be honest, does anyone really go out of their way to get their hands on some fried Nemo on a bun unless it’s Lent, they’ve been dared by a buddy, or the sandwich somehow landed up in their bag by accident? The Whatacatch sandwich, on the other hand, has undoubtedly shifted our perspective (if only somewhat) on portable fish dinners. What it all comes down to is a Whataburger Jr.

While the fish itself is moist and soft, the batter is crispy and flavorful, with just the proper amount of spice.

Furthermore, the freshness of the lettuce and tomato elevates the entire attempt to the point that we could consider ordering it on purpose the next time.

2. Long John Silver’s: Wild Alaska Pollock Sandwich

Why does a major fast food restaurant have less than 10,000 Instagram followers while being a household name? It probably makes more sense if you know that the chain in question belongs to Long John Silver. After it was sold to an investment group in 2011 by the Yum! Brands family (which includes Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and KFC), its prospects for survival as a viable brand were not promising. However, things have improved since then, as seen by the remodeling of storefronts and the increase in sales.

Grilled salmon and shrimp have been added to the menu, which includes the typical range of fried fish, such as the Wild Alaska Pollock Sandwich.

The other components of the sandwich are also noteworthy: a fluffy bread, sour crinkle-cut pickles for a little of additional crunch, and a generous quantity of tartar sauce for an unexpected, but welcome, layer of flavor on top of the burger.

Despite the fact that wild pollock is also available at Jack in the Box, the breading here isn’t the conventional panko or breadcrumbs; instead, it’s a flour batter that’s more frequently seen in a traditional order of fish and chips.

In fact, if you pulled the pollock out of the sandwich and tossed it into a bowl of fish and chips, it wouldn’t seem out of place at all! It’s so good, in fact, that it almost feels out of place at a fast food restaurant. Illustration by Maggie Rossetti for Thrillist

1. Popeyes: Cajun Flounder Sandwich

The sensationalPopeye’s Chicken Sandwichwill continue to serve as the gold-brown standard by which all current and future menu products will be assessed for the foreseeable future, regardless of whether Popeyes likes it or not. When the Cajun Flounder Sandwich, the first fish sandwich offered by the Louisiana-style company, was debuted in early 2021, it was met with great expectations, which was understandable. While we recognize that chicken and fish are in completely different categories, we admit that we were skeptical about whether the fish sandwich would be on par with the chicken sandwich when we went to taste it.

  1. It’s a really good fish sandwich, to be honest.
  2. It’s not difficult to understand why.
  3. Popeyes did a good job of positioning itself for success by including those elements into this sandwich, and fortunately, they don’t have to carry the rest of the ingredients.
  4. Certainly, it’s a crowd-pleasing choice of fish on its own, but the restaurant chain takes it to the next level by coating it in a crispy breading that’s filled with spicy cajun flavour.
  5. The traditional tartar sauce, on the other hand, works in tandem with the pickles to provide sharpness and acid to help balance out the fattiness of the fish.
  6. You may place an order without any reservations.
  7. It’s almost unjust that the Cajun Flounder will eternally live in the shadow of the Popeyes Chicken Sandwich, yet if not for the latter, it probably wouldn’t exist.

This Is the Best Fast-Food Fish Sandwich, According to a Food Critic

This comes just in time for the Lenten season. The date is February 28, 2021. Thanks to Popeyes for the use of their logo. The development of one specific fast-food brand’s fish sandwich, which stood out from the rest, was praised by a professional food reviewer during the Lenten season, who declared it “delicious.” Scott Vogel, a writer for Long Island’s major newspaper, Newsday, writes about a wide range of meals for the magazine, which is published weekly. When it comes to offering his thoughts on anything from upscaleFrench bistros to Valentine’s Day sweets from Dunkin’ Donuts to identifying the best steakhouses on the island, Vogel is a seasoned pro who has tasted it all.

(See also: McDonald’s Is Making These 8 Major Upgrades to Its Facilities.) But first, let’s take a look at what he didn’t care for.

“If you’re wondering how Americans came to like fish sandwiches that don’t taste or look like fish, go no farther than McDonald’s, which has been extruding these clones since the early 1960s,” says Vogel.

“Its filet, which is a breading event in which pollock makes an appearance, is only three inches square and tastes exactly like it appears—white,” he explained.

Vogel noted that Popeye’s sandwich was “the uncommon fish sandwich that truly tastes like anything,” which he described as “the unusual fish sandwich that actually tastes like something.” Here’s what I think about it in the end: “Cayenne pepper and other spices infuse true heat into a batter that is crispy rather than mushy, as is the case with so many of its competitors.

Between that, Popeye’s quarter-inch pickle slices, creamy tartar, the foresight to omit the cheese, and the insulated foil bag, the Cajun Flounder sandwich is a deserving follow-up, a beacon of hope amid a sea of gloomy prospects.” Popeyes appears to have done it again, this time by developing another legendary, bar-raising meal, this time in the category of fish sandwiches.

We tried fried-fish sandwiches from every major fast-food chain — and the winner is clear

  • This week marks the beginning of Lent, a Catholic tradition during which many people refrain from eating meat on Fridays. Fast-food restaurants only have a limited number of non-meat alternatives – yet fish sandwiches are frequently the most popular choice among onlookers, so we examined the fishwiches offered by numerous establishments. Unsurprisingly, the most of them were disgusting, but a select handful managed to surprise us

From the Norse braving the icy northern seas to Columbusaimlessly bumbling into the Caribbean, the ocean has struck fearand trepidation in the heart of man.A similar feeling of hesitation often accompanies something elsefrom the sea: fast-food fish sandwiches.McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish –created for Catholicsabstaining from meat on Fridays duringLent – started the trend in 1962. Since then, most fast-foodchains have introduced a Lent-approved fish sandwich. But are they any good? “Fast-food fish” doesn’t sound seaworthyon paper. We decided to taste test fish sandwiches from sevenmajor chains to find out which fishwiches fill our sails, andwhich ones deserve a keelhauling.

Ah, the beautiful bounty of the sea: Arby’s, Burger King, Dairy Queen, McDonald’s, Popeyes, Wendy’s, and White Castle, fresh from the nets.

Photograph courtesy of the source Hollis Johnson is a well-known actor. Although this sandwich appears to be compressed and forlorn in appearance, the ancient adage “don’t judge a book” applies here. The fish, which is purportedly “North Pacific cod,” is exceptionally crisp and flavorful. When I bite into it, the battered crunch reminds me of a real-deal fish fry, and the flesh is flaky white and light. A tinge of dill in the tartar sauce provides a degree of depth that fast-food tartar sauce typically falls short of, and the pickles are sour and snappy, and they’re distributed uniformly.

The standard bun is forgettable, which is exactly as it should be.

Even if it isn’t quite on the same level as a freshly prepared order of fish and chips from a roadside stand in Ipswich, Massachusetts, it is surprising.

The Best Fast Food Fish Sandwich

photograph taken from a public domain Hollis Johnson is an American actor and director. Even though this sandwich is crushed and forlorn in appearance, the ancient saying “don’t judge a sandwich by its cover” holds true. There’s something particularly sharp about the fish, which is purportedly “North Pacific cod.” This fish has a battered crunch that reminds me of a real, honest-to-goodness fish fry, with white flaky flesh. A tinge of dill in the tartar sauce provides a degree of depth that fast-food tartar sauce sometimes falls short of, and the pickles are sour and snappy, with even application.

In the same way that the standard bun should be, the steamed bun should be forgettable.

Sure, it’s not quite on the same level as a plate of fish and chips from a roadside stand in Ipswich, Massachusetts, but for what one would anticipate from a fast-food restaurant, it’s surprisingly.

Best Fast Food Fish Sandwiches

  1. A variety of fish sandwiches, including the Whataburger WhataCatch Sandwich, the White Castle Panko Breaded Fish Slider, McDonald’s Filet-o-Fish, and Popeye’s Cajun Flounder Sandwich, are available. Long John Silver Pacific Cod

What Makes a Good Fish Sandwich?

Prior to looking at some of the greatest fish sandwiches available from fast food establishments, let’s look at what constitutes a decent fish sandwich in the first place. The majority of the time, an excellent fish sandwich is composed of three distinct degrees of excellence. The fish, the bread, and the toppings are the three main components of the sandwich. Some fish sandwiches will be topped with salad, while others will just have a sauce on the side. The interplay of tastes between the fish and the toppings is what distinguishes an excellent fish sandwich from a bad one.

After all, the bread can make or break a decent burger, and the same can be said for a good fish sandwich, depending on the fish.

In order to better understand what constitutes a decent fish sandwich, let’s take a look at some of the top selections that are now available in fast-food restaurants around the United States.

Whataburger WhataCatch Sandwich

The Whataburger Whatacatch sandwich is one of the greatest fast-food fish sandwiches that you can get your hands on right now. This fish sandwich combines everything that you could possibly desire in a nice fish sandwich, and it also happens to be very tasty. With panko breaded Alaskan pollock as its core, this sandwich also includes lettuce, tomato, and tartar sauce as side ingredients. All of this is placed together in a delicious white bun. The tastes in this burger are a wonderful match for one another, which is what makes it such a delicious meal.

White Castle Panko Breaded Fish Slider

It is possible to get the Whataburger Whatacatch sandwich, which is one of the greatest fast-food fish sandwiches on the market. Despite the fact that it features everything you could ever desire in a nice fish sandwich, this sandwich is extremely great. This sandwich, which is centered on panko breaded Alaskan pollock, also includes lettuce, tomato, and tartar sauce. Served on a delicious white bread, this dish is a must-try! Each of the tastes in this burger works in perfect harmony with the others, which is what makes this sandwich so good.

McDonald’s Filet-o-Fish

When we started this list, we knew there was no way we could leave out the iconic McDonald’s filet-o-fish, so we included it in the top three. The filet-o-fish sandwich is the original fish sandwich in the fast-food business, and it was really the first non-hamburger meal to be put to the McDonald’s menu in 1962, making it the first non-hamburger meal ever. Currently, it is without a doubt one of McDonald’s most popular menu items. It is obvious that the filet-o-fish is a hit because it is still on the menu today, even though it is a straightforward dish.

It’s straightforward, but tasty, and it’s a dependable option whenever you’re craving a decent fish sandwich.

Popeye’s Cajun Flounder Sandwich

Historically, the seafood po-boy that Popeye’s formerly served was one of the greatest fish sandwiches to ever be served in a fast-food establishment. This excellent sandwich is no longer available; however, Popeye’s has lately added a new fish sandwich to their menu, and it’s an absolute knockout. Cajun flounder sandwich, which is made out of a delectable fillet of fried flounder that has been coated with spicy Cajun seasoned breadcrumbs, is what we’re talking about today. This fried fish is then placed on top of a buttered brioche bun, with thick-cut pickles being served on the side as an accompaniment.

The Cajun flounder sandwich differs from the other sandwiches on this list in that it is the only one that is spicy in nature. Popeye’s is the place to go if you prefer your dish sandwich with a little spice to it.

Long John Silver Pacific Cod

Long John Silvers is another restaurant that employs a different type of fish than pollock. In their Classic cod sandwich, which is named after the Pacific Cod that is used as the primary component, they employ Pacific Cod as the primary ingredient. In fact, this is the same fish that is used in their traditional cod supper. Instead, it is simply stuffed inside a sandwich and topped with tartar sauce and pickles to provide further flavor to the meal. In contrast to the majority of fast food restaurants, Long John Silver focuses in fish, so you can be confident that you will be able to acquire a high-quality fish sandwich if you visit this establishment.

Culver’s North Atlantic Cod Sandwich

In addition to Culvers, which serves high-quality fish sandwiches, there are several more options. After all, Culver’s understands how to prepare a tasty piece of fish. The firm provides a variety of various fish sandwiches, but we believe that the North Atlantic Cod sandwich is the finest choice for this particular dish. Culver’s, like Long John Silver’s, produces their sandwiches with cod instead of pollock, which elevates them to an even higher level of excellence. Hand-battered and fried fish fillets are served on a buttered toasted hoagie bread with tartar sauce, lettuce and Wisconsin cheddar cheese on the side It’s truly something exceptional, and it’s absolutely worth trying out.

Jack in the Box Fish Sandwich

The fish sandwich at Jack in the Box is a seasonal item that appears and disappears from the menu frequently. The fish sandwich has been absent from the Jack in the Box menu for some years, until it was reinstated in the spring of 2021. This burger, which we’ve dubbed the Fish Sandwich to keep things simple, is actually fairly simple in terms of ingredients, but it tastes fantastic. This sandwich, which features a panko-breaded pollock fillet at its center and is covered with tartar sauce and lettuce before being placed on a toasted bun, is delicious.

Wendy’s Premium Cod Fillet Sandwich

Wendy’s is another place where the fish sandwich comes and goes on a regular basis. When it comes to fish sandwiches, this restaurant nearly always has a selection to choose from, however it alternates between the Premium cod fillet sandwich and the crunchy Panko sandwich. Despite the fact that both of these sandwiches are really delectable, our favorite is the premium cod fillet sandwich. This sandwich is simple yet delicious, consisting of a breaded fish fillet topped with lettuce and tartar sauce and served within a toasted baguette brushed with butter.

Burger King Big Fish Sandwich

Returning to fast food establishments that serve pollock in their sandwiches, the Burger King Big Fish sandwich is the next stop on our list. Again, this pollock fillet is coated in Panko breadcrumbs and cooked till golden brown before serving. However, it is the items that are used as toppings on the Burger King version of this classic fish sandwich that distinguish it from the competition.

Burger King tops this fish fillet with their own special tartar sauce, which is served with zesty pickles and all of it is served in a toasted brioche bun. To make this sandwich even better, it is really rather substantial too, so this is a supper that will fill you straight up.

Arby’s King’s Hawaiian Fish Deluxe Sandwich

Maintaining the pollock theme, Arby’s has chosen to utilize it as the primary ingredient in its King’s Hawaiian Fish Deluxe sandwich. There is a substantial amount of fish fillet in this sandwich, so you will receive exceptional value for your money. Once fried, this delectable fish fillet is placed on top of a bed of lettuce and tomato, with a dollop of thick tartar sauce to finish it off. Every one of these ingredients is placed together in a fluffy sweet bun that has traveled all the way from Hawaii (hence the name).

Steak ‘n Shake Fish Sandwich

It is interesting to note that the fish sandwich at Steak-n-Shake is considerably different from the other alternatives we have considered thus far. Due to the fact that the Steak n’ Shake fish sandwich does not include even a single fillet of fish, this is the case. The fact that it comes with many pieces of breaded fish within it distinguishes it from the competition. These fillets are often made using cod that has been coated in beer batter and fried before being served on a grilled baguette with lettuce and tartar sauce, among other ingredients.

Captain D’s Giant Fish Sandwich

If, on the other hand, you are hungry, you should pay a visit to Captain D’s Restaurant. Because Captain D’s specializes in fish, their fish sandwiches are of the highest caliber, and the huge fish sandwich is the ideal option if you’re in the mood for something substantial. With two batter-dipped fish fillets piled on top of zesty tartar sauce and lettuce, this monstrous sandwich is a mouthful of flavor. These two huge fillets are then put together on a warm, toasted bread that you will undoubtedly enjoy.

Dairy Queen Wild Alaskan Fish Sandwich

There is also a fish sandwich available at Dairy Queen, which is known as the Wild Alaskan fish sandwich. Due to the fact that it includes just 420 calories, this burger is an excellent choice if you are looking for a low-calorie dinner option. It is created using Alaskan pollock, which is breaded and deep-fried before being served with chopped lettuce and tartar sauce, among other things. While this choice, like the most of the fish sandwiches we’ve looked at so far in this guide, is simple, having a decent fish sandwich is certainly something that should be considered while making your sandwich.

Carl’s Jr/Hendee’s Beer-Battered Fish Sandwich

Any Carl’s Jr or Hendee’s restaurant within driving distance will be able to provide a mouth-watering fish sandwich for you and your friends and family. The beer-battered fish sandwich, which is offered by both firms and is prepared with Alaskan pollock, is similar to many of the other sandwiches we have looked at so far. It is served on a bun with lettuce and tartar sauce below it, as well as an additional coating of tartar sauce on top of the fish fillet.

Because of these layers, this sandwich is bursting with flavor, which is greatly heightened by the beer batter that coats the fish itself on the outside of the sandwich.

Ivar’s Fish Sandwich

If you are a resident or visiting Washington, you must try the fish sandwich at Ivar’s. It is delicious. The fish sandwiches at Ivar’s are excellent, despite the fact that the chain is still very tiny (it only has outlets in Washington State). The core of their fish sandwich is a huge fillet of breaded cod, which is served in a large brioche baguette with lettuce and tomato. In addition, this bread contains lettuce, tomato, and tartar sauce, all of which are offered on the side. When you eat this sandwich, you will realize that there is something really special about the fish sandwiches at Ivar’s.

Chick-fil-A Fish Sandwich

Finally, let’s talk about the fish sandwich at Chick-fil-A to bring things all together. Chick-fil-A is known for its chicken, but its fish sandwich is actually rather good. Chick-fil-fish A’s sandwich, like Steak-n- Shake’s, has a variety of fillets, which contributes to the delicious flavor of the sandwich. Served on a bed of tomato and lettuce with a slice of cheese on top, and with the option of a lemon tartar sauce on the side, these cod fillets are sure to please. Because the blend of tastes in this fish sandwich is unlike any other sandwich we have examined, Chick-fil-A is the place to go if you are looking for something a bit unusual.

Final Thoughts

In brief, we’ve looked at what constitutes a good fast-food fish sandwich, as well as some of the greatest fast-food fish sandwiches currently available on the market, to put up this guide. It doesn’t matter if you want a savory fish sandwich, a healthy fish sandwich, or something completely unique; this guide will provide you with a variety of options. Best Fast Food Fish Sandwich in 2020

Fast food fish flies under the radar for most of the year, only coming to the surface during a handful of months out of the year known as “Seafood Season.” The question is, how will things be for the remainder of the year? Specifically, we’re looking for the truth about fast food fish sandwiches — the good, the terrible, and the ugly (and believe us when we say there’s a lot of the latter). Fast food fish sandwiches have a poor reputation, which is not surprising. When people think of fish, they think of frozen and gray fish that is far from fresh.

Do not fear, we have clearly mentioned below which sandwiches are worth your money and which sandwiches you should toss back into the sea.

And although some are open all year, others only open their big fish guns during the Lenten season, so it is with fishing.

No one can blame people for being finicky about their cod and pollock compared to their chicken or steak.

Consequently, just though Fred on Yelp complained that his sandwich was substandard does not imply that you would feel the same way. Whether it’s the midst of summer or the middle of Lent, fast food fish sandwiches are a delicious meat substitute that anybody can enjoy.

Culver’sNorth Atlantic Cod Sandwich

Rank: 1 In a toasted hoagie bun, Culver’s North Atlantic cod is hand-cut and hand-battered, then topped with a family recipe of olives, capers, sweet relish, lettuce, and cheddar cheese, all sandwiched between two slices of bread. Because this fast food fish sandwich is created to order, you can be assured that the fish is fresh, which is one of the factors that contributed to this sandwich being in the #1 seat. They mean it when they claim “cooked to order,” bragging that your meal will not even come into contact with the grill until after you have placed your order.

The one complaint we have gotten regarding Culver’s fish sandwich is that it’s a touch boring when it comes to flavor, but that’s nothing that can’t be addressed with some more sauce.

Wendy’sNorth Pacific Cod Sandwich

Rank No. 2 in the world Wendy’s also offers a fish sandwich, which is surprisingly good for a fast-food restaurant. It is made up of a wild-caught North Pacific cod filet that has been breaded in crispy panko and served with tartar sauce, three dill pickle slices, and lettuce. You can’t go wrong with this fast food fish sandwich, which has received generally positive customer feedback. However, it is only available during Lent, so make sure you don’t miss out between February and April. The cost is $4.

Captain D’sGiant Fish Sandwich

3rd place in the rankings The Giant Fish Sandwich, another staple from Captain D’s, is a great option for lunch or dinner. So, what is it about it that makes it “giant?” There are two fried fish filets that have been splashed with tartar sauce and topped with shredded lettuce on the plate. The toasted bun is substantial enough to prevent the sandwich from coming apart as you bite into it, which is far more than can be said for most fast food fish sandwiches. The Giant Fish Sandwich is offered at certain Captain D’s locations all year long, although it is only available at some locations during the Lenten season.

Bojangles’BojAngler Fish Sandwich

4th place in the rankings In the BojAngler, a wild-caught cod filet is wrapped in Bojangles’ proprietary spice blend, covered with cheddar and a zesty sauce, and sandwiched between two golden-toasted buns. During Seafood Season each year, the fast food fish sandwich is brought back to the Bojangles’ menu, where it is served with the BojAngler Fish Platter. In addition to being one of the greatest fish filets available, the tartar sauce is rich and savory, and it goes perfectly with the huge cod filet.

Alternatively, you may get the same Cajun-seasoned cod with the dinner plate, which includes two filets, two fixins, a buttermilk biscuit, tartar sauce, and a drink for $22. $2.50 is the cost of this item. Availability: There are just a few times available throughout the year.

McDonald’sFilet O’ Fish

5th place in the rankings McDonald’s Filet-o-Fishpurchased on the spur of the moment under the license CC BY-SA 2.0 (Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0) Of course, we couldn’t forget about the sandwich that got it all started. With its signature wild-caught Alaskan pollock topped with American cheese and tartar sauce, McDonald’s Filet O’ Fish is served on a soft steamed bun that has been baked to perfection. One advantage that the Filet O’ Fish has is its ability to last for an extended period of time.

$3.79 is the cost of the item.

Chick-fil-AFish Sandwich

Rank: 6 Chick-Fil-A Fish Sandwichpurchased on the spur of the moment under the license CC BY-SA 2.0 (Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0) Normally Chick-Fil-A is a list-topper, but fast food fish sandwiches are a different species. Chick-fil-A is offering a fish sandwich for a short time during Lent, breaking away from its traditional chicken menu. It comprises two pieces of fish, properly battered and fried. It would be simpler to eat if there was only one patty, but nothing to moan over.

Order this battered classic with a side of renowned waffle fries, and you’ll be satisfied.

Only during the Lenten season is this item available.

White CastleFish Slider

7th place in the rankings White Castle isn’t afraid to try new things, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they’ve added a Fish Slider to their repertoire. Served on a conventional slider bread, this fast-food fish sandwich is constructed with Alaskan Pollock and topped with cheese (American, Jalapeno, or Smoked Cheddar). A significant advantage over the burger sliders is that it looks to be far larger in size. Although it is not exactly the same as McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish, it is quite close (maybe they catch their pollock from the same spot).

Take note that this fast food fish sandwich appears to be a little on the expensive side considering the size.

SubwayTuna Sub

8th place in the rankings Fiona Moore’s Tuna Subby’s Subway in accordance with the license CC BY-NC-ND 2.0 license Because the Tuna Sub is one of Subway’s most popular food products, we had to include it on our list of fast food fish sandwiches, despite the fact that it isn’t made with yet another cod patty. This sandwich is delicious served on Italian HerbCheese bread and topped with lettuce, onions, black olives, tomatoes, and jalapenos, among other ingredients.

If you’re searching for a low-carb or gluten-free version, you may substitute tuna salad for the bread in this sandwich. Prices start at $6.75. (footlong) Availability: Throughout the year

Captain D’sNorth Atlantic Lobster Roll

9th place in the rankings Isn’t it true that a lobster roll may be considered a fast food fish sandwich? With this one, we have no doubts about our decision. Captain D’s is known for its fast food fish, so if you’re looking to acquire some seafood while you’re on the run, this is the spot to stop. An order of a lobster roll is almost always expected at a seafood buffet. From the shores of the North Atlantic, Captain D’s dishes you fresh seafood prepared in the New England tradition. $3.99 is the cost of this item.

Carl’s JuniorRedhook Beer-Battered Fish Sandwich

Rank: tenth With a beer-battered fish filet (thank you, Redhook Brewery, for the liquor!) and tomato and lettuce, Carl’s Junior fish sandwich is sandwiched between a soft sesame bun. For starters, the fish patty is paper thin, and there is far too much lettuce stacked on top of the fish sandwich. A tiny bit of tartar sauce is sprinkled on top, but if you want to be sure you can taste it, we recommend asking for more. It doesn’t taste horrible, but the thinness of the fish patties detracts from the overall appearance of the dish.

Dairy QueenCrispy Fish Sandwich

Rank: 11 Nowadays, it appears that you can purchase a fish sandwich almost anywhere.even at an ice cream speciality company. Dairy Queen provides its own take on the fish sandwich, which consists of a crispy fish fillet topped with leaf lettuce and tartar sauce. However, it is at the bottom of our list for a reason: it is a chain restaurant. When it comes to this fast food fish sandwich, it lacks the “crisp” that the label promises, and the bun is stale, and the lettuce is limp. It’s only available for a couple months out of the year, so don’t go racing to your nearest DQ since you’ve got 10 better alternatives to select from here.

All 18 fast-food fish sandwiches, ranked worst to best – for Lent, of course

Cory Morse writes for MLive.com. Consider my confidence in my editor to be put to the test. What was his brilliant idea? In observance of Lent, during which Christians refrain from eating meat but are permitted to consume fish, I ranked every fast food fried fish sandwich I could locate in the state of New Jersey. As a matter of fact, I have made a number of poor eating choices during my life. Fast-food fish, on the other hand, was something I avoided at all costs. Is it possible to get deep-fried white fish through a drive-through window?

What exactly is tartar sauce, exactly?

I’m still baffled as to what to do.

But, hey, I got it done.

They were all delicious.

Some, on the other hand, will cause you to reconsider your religious beliefs.

Roy Rogers, age 18 Sandwich made with wild Pacific cod Is Roy Rogers still a phenomenon in today’s world?

I had to go to the Molly Pitcher Travel Plaza in Cranbury in order to locate one, and I instantly regretted my decision.

I thought it tasted like those lousy fish sticks you used to get from the school cafeteria.

Popeyes Fish Po’Boy (also known as Popeyes Fish Po’Boy) I really like the chicken from Popeyes!

A mediocre excuse for a po’boy, served with a tartar sauce that is just disgusting.

Oh, yes, it’s me.

Popeyes Shrimp Po’Boy is the sixteenth item on the menu.

The tartar sauce was equally as bad as the fish itself.

Arthur Treacher’s Fried Fish Sandwich (number 15) There are just a handful of Arthur Treacher’s franchises surviving in the United States.

Who says journalism isn’t glamorous?

I got a stronger flavor of fried batter than I did of fried fish.

Filet-O-Fish from McDonald’s This was the one I was most looking forward to!

It even had a great advertisement to promote it!

Please be advised that there is some strong language in the video.

And there’s nothing particularly tasty about it.

Is it okay if I take back the Filet-O-Fish?

You are free to keep it.

13.

That small cheeseburger is one of life’s great guilty pleasures, and it’s one of the best.

This is a heinous crime against humanity.

What exactly is the “fish” that they are passing off as “beef” on their cheeseburger is a mystery to me.

If it met the criteria for inclusion on this list, it would be towards the top.

So, as soon as Lent is done, you have my permission to dash to the nearest White Castle and devour ten sliders in under ten minutes.

Long John Silver’s Classic Fish Sandwich (number 12) It’s not about the sandwiches; it’s about the newfound friendships we’ve formed along the journey.

Unfortunately, the sandwich was unremarkable and perhaps a little chilly when it arrived.

Sonic Premium Fish Sandwich (No.

It went without a hitch.

Arby’s not only carries meats, but they also carry fish!

It is true that the fish is far larger than the bread, as the adverts boast.

It has a chicken flavor to it!

This is a positive development.

Wendy’s North Pacific Cod Sandwich, number seven.

One of the most delicious sandwiches on the list is made possible by a flaky texture paired with a fresh-tasting fish.

Arby’s King’s Hawaiian Fish Deluxe is the sixth option.

Alaskan Pollock that has been captured in the wild?

Consider myself awestruck.

Perhaps keeping it simple when it comes to fish sandwiches is the best approach?

The tartar sauce on this sandwich was the greatest of all the sandwiches, and it was the flavor that stood out the most.

Is the fish from Checkers delectable?

The Crispy Fish Sandwich from Dairy Queen Perhaps the sheer exhilaration of knowing that my arduous watery adventure was drawing to a close caused me to go into a state of fish-fried madness while eating this last sandwich.

The fish itself had a great crunch to it, as well as a pleasant fish flavor.

The Fried Clam Sandwich from Arthur Treacher’s.

Frying clams is the most effective technique of preparing them, and they’re surprisingly difficult to make a mistake with.

This sandwich came apart a little bit while I was chewing on it, but the clams that remained on the bun were tasty and had just the proper amount of chewy texture while remaining crisp.

Fish Sandwich from Chick-fil-A There hasn’t been a single time that I’ve been disappointed with a Chick-fil-A meal.

As a result, I suppose it shouldn’t come as a surprise that their fish sandwich is also rather delicious.

You had to put the tartar sauce on yourself because it came in packets; but, after I got it on the sandwich, it was delicious.

By slathering it in Chick-fil-A sauce (the most delicious condiment ever invented), you might be able to fool yourself into believing you’re eating one of their chicken sandwiches.
