Chain Restaurant Grilled Cheeses Ranked Worst To Best

Shutterstock When you think of the greatest comfort meal, what is the first thing that springs to mind? Whether it’s a comforting bowl of tomato soup or a dish of crispy fried chicken, there’s something for everyone. In America, we believe that a warm and toasty grilled cheese sandwich is the ultimate comfort meal — you know, the kind of sandwich that you’d beg your parents to prepare for you when you were a kid. We can’t quite put our finger on what it is about the classic combination of bread, butter, and cheese that takes our taste senses to comfort paradise.

There are almost unlimited variations, which is most likely the reason that gourmet grilled cheese businesses are springing up all across the United States to serve them.

In 2018, we’re still going for the grilled cheese, and we’re even honoring it in all of its glory with an entire month (Happy National Grilled Cheese Month, by the way) dedicated to this delicious combo of carbohydrates and cheese.

Let’s take a look at some of our favorite grilled cheese options from our favorite fast food and fast casual restaurants.

Dairy Queen’s grilled cheese on Texas Toast is a secret for a reason

So you’re most likely stopping by Dairy Queen for a taste of their famed fries, traditional burgers, or ice cream in the shape of their delicious Blizzards, among other things. We, on the other hand, are privy to a little thing known as their hidden menu. You’ll be able to try totally new things from DQ as a result of this insider information, such as the peanut butter and jelly shake and the slushy frozen hot chocolate. Additionally, you may order a grilled cheese sandwich, which isn’t really a surprise considering they have a lot of bread and cheese lying around.

The Texas Toast is topped with cheese and then baked, and although this seems fine and dandy on the surface, what we’ve seen is no shortage of cheesy sacrilege on a grander scale.

This unappealing sandwich also contains an unnecessary 14 grams of fat and 1,230 milligrams of salt.

DQ, stick to what you’re familiar with.

Five Guys’ grilled cheese sandwich is a gooey mess

Okay, so this next one is pretty much on par with Diary Queen’s unsuccessful effort at a grilled cheese sandwich in terms of quality. Five Guys does serve up some pretty excellent burgers (not to mention their incredible hand-cut French fries) in a fast-casual setting, and they do so in a casual environment. Because they’ve become so well-known, they’ve expanded to more than 1,500 sites throughout the world since founding their first restaurant in 1986. For 420 calories (and between $5 and $6 dollars), you could essentially toss your money away on their version of the grilled cheese, which is completely useless.

The cheese is hardly melted, and to be honest, we were unhappy with the dish.

They also employ this processed abomination as a literal bread for an off-menu burger that is somewhat similar to a patty melt but is far from deserving of the moniker “burger.” But we sincerely implore you, please do not order this item, no matter what you do.

Panera Bread’s grilled cheese just isn’t worth it

We certainly hope that our first few postings didn’t cause you to give up on grilled cheese sandwiches for good. It gets better, you guys. It really does. We will keep our word. When it comes to serving tourists a little something of everything — from sandwiches to soups and even pastries — Panera Bread has created a name for itself by delivering food quickly and to order in a fast-casual setting. Everything from the bacon turkey bravoto the fan favorite chipotle chicken avocado melt is available on their extensive sandwich menu.

  • However, if you like something a little more traditional, a grilled cheese sandwich might be a good choice.
  • If you want a classic version, you’ll have to go for American cheese on thick-sliced classic white bread, but we hope you don’t settle for anything less.
  • Despite the fact that it is a very, very simple sandwich, it will cost you over $7 and include 860 calories.
  • If you have to choose between two options, don’t choose this.

Cook Out’s grilled cheese sandwich is a bit underwhelming

If you’re not acquainted with Cook Out, it’s a fast-food restaurant company that operates mostly in the Southeast part of the country. Their menu is broad and diverse, and it is designed to fulfill the needs of every customer. They have everything from a spicy crispy chicken sandwich and a corn dog to a quesadilla and hushpuppies, and they have over 40 different varieties of milkshakes to select from as well. In the mood for something cheesy? White cheddar cheese nibbles or a cheddar cheese-loaded char-grilled chicken sandwich are also options on the menu.

Their grilled cheese, which is available as a stand-alone item or as an accompaniment to any tray meal, is made using their hamburger buns.

Stick to their fresh char-grilled cheeseburgers or a traditional hot dog with some cheddar fries and a tall glass of Cheerwine, we advise.

In-N-Out grilled cheese is fresh, but forgettable

In-N-Out is the stuff of legends, and with good reason. It has generated such a great deal of interest and excitement that it has left many East coasters scratching their heads in bemusement as to what exactly is going on with the largely West coast chain. It is, in our opinion, worth all of the hype. If you don’t start with a Double Double and some animal style fries, you’ll never get it. It is a way of life. They also happen to be the driving force behind a not-so-secret, hidden menu. That it has gotten so popular that they have posted it out there on their website for the entire world to see is not a hidden reality.

In addition, you’ll discover In-N-take Out’s on the classic grilled cheese sandwich on this particular menu.

This grilled cheese, however, is not cooked in butter like a regular grilled cheese, and it reminds us of a hamburger that is lacking a burger patty.

Their grilled cheese sandwich, on the other hand, is quite forgettable, especially for those who have traveled from the West coast to see this prized location. In the end, if you’re at In-N-Out, there are a variety of additional items that you should consider ordering.

Here’s some Chick-fil-A grilled cheese secrets

Your mind is most likely racing right now as you wait in that epically long Chick-fil-A drive-thru queue, thinking about their trademark crispy fried chicken. Despite the fact that Chick-fil-A is closed on Sundays, the popular restaurant chain shows no signs of slowing down, with sales at Chick-fil-A averaging more than McDonald’s, Starbucks, and Subway combined. Despite having more than 2,300 locations across the United States, Chick-fil-A maintains a top-secret menu for customers. If you’re in the know, you can get your hands on anything from a spicy chicken, egg, and cheese morning bagel sandwich to a fried chicken club, among other things.

The Chick-fil-A Deluxe (which does not include chicken) is an excellent option for those seeking for something a bit more exciting than your standard grilled cheese sandwich.

It’s normally up to the management and chef to determine whether or not to make this special-to-order food for you, and be aware that you may have to wait a little longer than expected.

Shake Shack’s grilled cheese on a potato bun is a buttery treat

Now we’re getting down to the nitty-gritty of our to-do list, otherwise known as the good stuff. Our top six selections are all really good renditions of the classic American song and dance. It’s no secret that Shake Shack is taking the country by storm. What began as a literal shack in New York City has spread fast across the United States, to places large and small. It is now a global phenomenon. There are some of the greatest fast casual versions of burgers and fries, as well as some of the best frozen custard, at this new age, millennial version of the roadside food stand.

Shake Shack’s four-layered Shake Shack Quad Burger will satisfy the most voracious of appetites, while lovers of its’sauce’ will be tempted by their shack sauced cheese fries.

It is their secret menu grilled cheese that utilizes the potato buns from the burger but turns them inside out and cooks them until they are golden brown and crunchy with just the proper amount of crunch.

As buttery as the traditional, but with a distinctive flavor that earns it a place near the top of our list.

Zaxby’s grilled cheese is like Mom’s own, but only better

We’ve made it to the last five, so fasten your seatbelts, everyone! As a result of their great adaptations of classic American fast food delivered in a family-friendly, informal atmosphere, Zaxby’s is swiftly gaining popularity: As a matter of fact, they just came in first place on our list of the finest fast food spicy crispy chicken sandwich. Known for serving everything from boneless wings to fried white cheddar nibbles, Zaxby’s has established itself as a favorite among diners around the country.

It’s a good thing for the big kids at heart that they also provide an adult grilled cheese sandwich.

This is everything we remember about the classic grilled cheese sandwiches our mother used to make for us when we were kids.

If you’re not in the mood for chicken at Zaxby’s, get this instead. It’s a great piece of work and a beautiful rendition of a classic piece.

Culver’s grilled cheese on sourdough is an American classic

Culver’s may not yet be available in every state, but they are unquestionably on the right route. Culver’s, which was founded in Wisconsin in the mid-1980s, has grown into a family favorite in the casual fast-food market as a result of their outstanding service and high-quality menu products. They also have clean and pleasant dining rooms that are more equivalent to those seen in a traditional table-service restaurant. We’ll never say no to one of their signatureButterBurgers or a scoop of their freshly frozen custard ever again.

  • Their original version of the classic sandwich makes use of American cheese that is produced in Wisconsin (duh!
  • Although it is on the children’s menu, we have been known to indulge in it from time to time – no guilt in that.
  • As a result of the legendary Midwestern friendliness, you may politely request whatever alteration you like for your grilled cheese sandwich.
  • You name anything, we’ll do it.

At Wawa, the grilled cheese possibilities are endless

Please accept my apologies in advance if you are not in close proximity to the next event. Oh, Wawa, how much we adore thee! It is impossible to make a mistake in our sight. If you’re fortunate enough to live near a Wawa, you’re fortunate enough, according to the proverb (or is it true?). When it comes to Wawa, the East Coast convenience store company, there is nothing to laugh about. The cult following for this convenience store meets market meets gas station (we know, it’s confusing!) can be attributed to their standout freshly prepared and reasonably priced food items, such as hoagies, stuffed pretzels, and the morning pick-me-up that are their Sizzlis (sizzlis are a type of sandwich).

When you stroll up to that beautiful screen where chance awaits to wow your taste senses, you might also indulge your appetite with a sourdough melt that you can customize yourself.

If you really want to go all out, how about a grilled cheese sourdough melt with pepperoni and mozzarella?

At Sonic Drive-In, grilled cheese is a true delight

Sonic Drive-In is a unique and unforgettable experience in and of itself. As a celebration and homage to the classic days of the American drive-in, this fast-food restaurant has exploded in recent years, with approximately 3,500 outlets throughout the majority of the United States, according to the company. Drink their distinctive Cherry Limeade while driving around in your vehicle, or eat some American staples like a corn dog or chili cheese fries while driving around in your car. The menu is extensive, and you’ll be pleased to know that it contains a grilled cheese sandwich, which is a popular choice.

The toast has a lovely give and chewiness to it, despite the fact that it has been nicely grilled on the outside.

We guarantee that if you shut your eyes, you will be taken back to your childhood memories. Due to the fact that it is part of their value menu and can frequently be found during specials such as 50-cent Grilled Cheese Day, it is also one of the more competitively priced options on our list.

Head to Steak ‘N Shake for grilled cheese perfection

We’ve dubbed it after our wonderful, cheese-loving companions. Steak ‘N Shake serves the mac daddy of all grilled cheese sandwiches, which is known as the Mac Daddy. Granted, the phrase “grilled cheese” does not appear either on the menu or in the name of this fast-casual restaurant, but there is great delight to be discovered here, and it goes well beyond their iconic Steakburger or handmade milkshakes. Steak ‘N Shake’s grilled cheese sandwich is an homage to the classic dish from the 1950s.

This is my Story

Cory is shown behind the counter. My name is Cory, and I’m a sandwich maker who specializes in grilled cheese sandwiches. grilled cheese is the ultimate comfort meal for some, a simple recall of how nice things used to taste and a representation of the innocence that has been lost through the passage of time. I’m sure everyone I know has a favorite way to create a grilled cheese sandwich; I certainly do. My sandwich is created with muenster cheese that pours out from between two slices of cinnamon raisin swirl bread and is topped with crispy bacon and honey mustard.

Even though it may seem unusual, I’d be willing to wager that people enjoy sandwiches that are either stranger or significantly better than mine.

I know you’ll enjoy them since I’ve told you so.

  • To find out which restaurants in the United States provide the finest grilled cheese sandwiches, Money worked with Yelp. The findings were calculated by comparing the restaurants with the highest ratings and most favorable reviews. Porky’s Kauai in Hawaii serves the grilled cheese sandwich that was named the greatest in America, and it costs $9.

Nothing beats a slab of cheese sandwiched between two slices of toasted bread for a quick and easy meal. Despite this, cooks all across the country have been experimenting in the kitchen for years, trying to figure out how to make the finest grilled cheese sandwich they possibly can. In search of the country’s greatest grilled cheese sandwiches, Money magazine went above and beyond the standard Kraft-slices-on-Wonder-bread recipe. The results were impressive. We collaborated with Yelp to identify restaurants that had both the highest ratings and a large number of positive reviews that mentioned “grilled cheese” in order to compile the following ranking; the winners included a sophisticated truffle grilled cheese sandwich, a spicy variation with pulled pork and habanero pepper, and even melted cheese inside of a waffle, among other things.
