What you’ll need

If you want to make a comprehensive Build-Your-Own-Sandwich-Platter, you’ll need a choice of fresh bread, sliced cheese, deli meat, gourmet spreads, and toppings to choose from. You want to be able to cover all of your bases and accommodate the dietary needs and preferences of your visitors. Plan to serve several vegetarian and vegan alternatives, as well as gluten-free bread if possible! I prefer to think of a few basic cold sandwiches as a starting point, and then add exciting features to allow my guests to express themselves creatively.

Once you have that information, you can do the arithmetic to determine how much of each component you will require.


Isn’t it true that you can’t create sandwiches without bread? Always check to see that they are fresh (no one wants stale bread sandwiches) and that they are sliced or split open so that your visitors don’t have to struggle with a bread knife! If I’m hosting a small gathering, I prefer to have at least four different types of appetizers, and six or more for larger gatherings. What I generally keep on my desk is as follows: Other amusing ones that you might include are:

Toppings and Spreads

It’s at this point that things start to become interesting! There are a plethora of entertaining components with which you may experiment. Really, the sky is the limit here. Seasonal vegetables and fruits, a variety of dips and spreads, and a variety of spices are available! Here are some ideas for spreads to get you started:

  • Butter, cream cheese, and mayonnaise (you may use a fun flavored mayonnaise, such as Chipotle Mayonnaise, but make sure you also have a standard choice)
  • You should include peanut butter and jelly if you’re serving young children or those who are finicky about their foods. Chicken Salad, Tuna Salad, Potato Salad, and Cole Slaw are some of the options. Your guests can use it as a condiment on their sandwiches or as a side dish. Fresh mozzarella dipped in a mixture of mustard, ketchup, and balsamic glaze is a delicious combination. You may either buy it or create it yourself
  • Both options are acceptable.

And for the garnishes:

  • Cut the lettuce leaves in half to make it simpler to include them into the sandwiches. Tomatoes should be cut, if at all possible. Pickles–again, cut pickles are more convenient
  • Other herbs, such as basil
  • Avocado slices
  • Red onion slices
  • Feta cheese

Don’t forget to season with salt and pepper.

How to Assemble a Build Your Own Sandwich Platter

This post should be regarded as a guide rather than a recipe in the traditional sense. The size of your platter or board will be determined by the number of people you intend to serve. You may feed a large group of people or simply a tiny dish for two or three individuals! Additionally, you may simply swap or augment some of my suggested components with ones that you like! The most important aim is for you and your guests to be able to indulge in your favorite sandwiches. The sandwich platter alone is usually sufficient to keep people fed and satisfied, but you can also serve some sides, such as chips and/or salad, to round out the meal.

You name it: holidays, game days, birthdays, picnics, movie nights, and casual get-togethers are all possibilities.

Equipment and tools that are recommended: A big serving platter, a platter or board, parchment paper, tiny dishes for sauces and spreads, spreader knives, and small spoons are all needed for this meal.

Step 1: Choose and prep your surface.

  • Prepare a big tray, dish, or cutting board by lining it with parchment paper before beginning. Later on, cleanup will be considerably simpler as a result.

  • Spreader knives and spoons for the spreads and sauces should not be overlooked. If you’re concerned about germs and people handling the dish, you might also supply little tongs for each item if you have them on hand. A large platter or board is stunning and entertaining, but you don’t need to possess one to put together this Sandwich Platter! Simply arrange various smaller plates for the cheese, meat, and toppings/spreads
  • I’ve previously said this, but don’t forget the salt and pepper (preferably flaky salt). There are usually a few guests who want their cuisine to be a little more salty than usual
  • Keep an eye on the materials on the board and refill them as necessary. Keep an eye out for mayonnaise and creamy salad dressings. For safety reasons, they should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. Napkins! There should be plenty of napkins! When there are sandwiches involved, things may become a little messy.

Possible Combinations

Every now and then, I’ll have a visitor who isn’t a foodie and isn’t interested in trying new things, such as putting together an unusual sandwich or being experimental. To that end, I prefer to put some chalkboards (or print out cards) with a few recommendations of popular sandwiches and the components that go into them on display. Just a few examples from an endless list of possibilities:

  • Bacon, lettuce, and tomato on a piece of sandwich bread. Don’t forget to smear some mayonnaise and a bit of salt on top of those tomatoes. Sandwiches such as the club sandwich can be created with any mix of meats, including turkey, ham, and bacon. In addition, lettuce, cheese, tomato, and mayonnaise are included. Served on a piece of sandwich bread
  • Roast Beef Sandwich – Roast beef, mayonnaise, mustard, onions, lettuce, and tomato on a piece of sandwich bread on a toasted bun. Perhaps some pickles as well
  • Caprese Sandwich — A ciabatta bun stuffed with fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, basil, and balsamic sauce. Delicious! My personal fave
  • On a roll, an Italian sub consists of a combination of meats (for example: ham, prosciutto and salami), lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, onion, and provolone cheese. This one is so simple that even my kid can create it

For the Meat

To begin, select 2-3 different types of deli meats from which to make your sandwich. This may include, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Turkey (experiment with other tastes such as honey, maple, cajun, smoked, etc.)
  • Black forest ham (with or without honey), smoked ham (with or without Virginia, maple, or brown sugar), and bacon (with or without honey). Roast beef, salami, pepperoni, pastrami, bologna, corned beef, and other deli meats

The meat should be cut thinly in order to be folded and/or rolled for the purposes of folding and/or rolling. In this case, you can request that your deli slice it like a standard “sandwich slice.” In order to save time, it is best to ask the deli to provide you with the number of slices you require rather than the weight you require. You will need 10 slices of each type of meat and cheese for the meat and cheese trays. It is a good idea to serve the turkey and roast beef on a deli tray so that they are not mixed together.

  1. It is possible to roll or fold the meat before placing it on the tray during the preparation process.
  2. If you wish to utilize the meat to make sandwiches for your visitors, it is preferable to fold the meat instead of cutting it.
  3. When folding, just fold the paper like an accordion, back and forth with approximately 1 1/2-inch folds.
  4. You want the meat and cheese to be arranged in a ring on the grill.
  5. Stack the folded meat in a pyramid shape, if possible, while stacking the folded meat.

It is necessary to repeat this process for each of the meats until you have multiple stacks of meat. This technique works nicely on any shape plate you want to use.

In order to create your deli platter, you can choose any number of different types of cheese. In order to avoid sticking together, firmer sliced cheeses (such as cheddar or Swiss) are the ideal choice for meat and cheese trays since they do not cling together as much and can be easily picked up with tongs. The lush green lettuce we used for our tray was folded up like a bouquet, torn off the excess at the bottom, and inserted into the hole in the centre.   • 12 teaspoon minced garlic

  • Prepare each sandwich filling by placing all of the ingredients in separate dishes and mixing them together. (There are a total of three) Using a silicone spatula, combine the two ingredients. (They are the most effective!) Please keep in mind that utilizing room temperature butter and cream cheese will make the mixing process much more straightforward. Put the bread slices out on a baking sheet and begin spreading the filling generously over each side of the bread
  • After all three fillings are done, set them aside. *Please keep in mind that I used a TOTAL of 18 pieces of bread. I cut the bread into 6 pieces for each filling.
